Aussie game charts: January 11-17

The house of Mario continues to hold the top five spots, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 slips down the rung.

2009 may have been all about Wii Fit, but so far it's one of Nintendo's other chart favourites that has dominated the new year in Australia: Mario Kart Wii. Last week was the second in a row that Mario's popular racing spin-off was at the top of the overall Australian game charts, according to industry trackers GfK Australia.

Nintendo still holds onto the top five games, but there was a slight reshuffle amongst New Super Mario Bros. and Wii Play, which moved up into third and fourth place, while Wii Sports Resort dropped down to number five. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for the PlayStation 3 dropped down one spot (to seventh place); meanwhile, its Xbox 360 cousin fared slightly worse, scraping in at number nine. The 10th spot goes to newcomer Army of Two: The 40th Day for the Xbox 360.

@ mattisgod01 "would you prefer they spend their time making the game as good as possible" Of coarse but that is the problem, they don't spend the time making the Wii games as good as possible. And don't bring up about the differences in consoles, because realistically, you have to spend money to make money, and if the 3rd party dev's acctually spent some money hiring more people, or another company to make the Wii version seperately, the game would be better, and in turn would sell more. Yes the majority of the Wii is out dated graphics and power wise, but the control hardware isn't, in fact it was probably introduced to early. The idea of games is to entertain, while trying to immerse you in the action, adventrue, whatever. The Wii motion controller is far better at immersing you. You are aiming the gun, with your hands like irl, rather than your fingers, you are pulling back the string, rather than pushing a button, ect. The Wii, you are getting it for the experience to do it yourself, being closer to reality than what the 360 and PS3 can offer. Yes, If you want better graphics than people are going for 360 and PS3, but if you ask me, the PC will always be more powerful, have better graphics, have better games, and will play better, with exception of probably fighting and racing games, but for rpg's/adventure's/action's/fps's, they will always play better on PC

It hardly seems fair to include Wii Play if it comes free with a wii remote.

@ jimmybrasco, You proved my point in saying that 3rd party Devs should develop the game separately for the Wii just because the hardware is outdated. It takes alot of time effort and money to make an entirely new game just to accommodate for the outdate technology it uses and most 3rd party devs make the decision that it is not realistically feasible. If the Devs are caught up spending all their time and resources to make a game version specific for every console then that is time that is not available to refine and perfect the game. If Nintendo used technology on par with that of Xbxox 360 and PS3 then 3rd party Devs would have had realistic access to it but by not doing so they have totally screwed them over. Do you honestly want 3rd party Devs wasting time and money on accommodating differences in consoles or would you prefer they spend their time making the game as good as possible?

@mattisgod01 Seriously you just proved my point, with the top 10 Wii games, the 3rd party games are so crap that they aren't there. If the technology is so inferior than it is so much easier to develop for, and yet 3rd parties still take so little time developing for it, they just try and port it down, from the 360/ps3 versions, when they should be developing the Wii version seperately. The 3rd parties should get one of their subsidiaries to develop the wii games from the start. cod 4 reflex is a perfect example of what the 3rd parties do, got a subsidiary to port the game creating a crapy port from the original. They should be developing them separately alongside specificaly for the Wii. Then the games would be better designed for the system, like the first party titles, and will sell better. The Wii has more games than the PS3 and im sure is getting close to the number that the 360 has if not more, and there are so many more 3rd party titles than Nintendo ones.

@ jimmybrasco, M$ and Sony are making motion sensing technology becuase they want to cash in on the fad, And Fads can last more then a few years. The only reason Nintendo games are in the top is because more people have the console and there is very few games for it. The technology is so inferior that most decent 3rd party games could not be imported without being totally ruined in the process. The range of decent 3rd party games on the Wii is a joke. Just take a look at the Top 10 best selling Wii games and laugh at the totally crap people are forced to buy . Biggest loser? Just Dance? Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games? And can Wii fit even be considered a game?

@mattisgod If motion sensing controls was a fad then Sony wouldn't be making similar technology and Microsoft a form of the technology. Fads would have fallen away by now, yet Wii produts stay top of monthly charts. Wii fit, Wii play, mario kart wii have been in the top 10 for months, where as there has been no constant top 10 products from other consoles. In relation to your 3rd party developers comments. just because all the top selling wii games are nintendo's, it doesn't screw over the 3rd party developers. They screw themselves over. If the games they made where better than they are then they would be in the top 10, but the 3rd party developers don't spend enough time making their games good enough, so Nintendo, who spend the time to make great games, obviously have there games in the top. Nintendo also are smart enough to bundle their accessories with games, wii sports and play mainly which encourages people to purchase them rather than buying the accessory on its own. Sony and Microsoft should bundle their motion control products with games when they come out and they will sell well and will be in the top 10 charts atleast for a few months.

Good work Nintendo. I haven't bought a game from you guys in a long time but still love the system. Just need some better 3rd party games (Not enough RPG's on the Wii for my liking) and HURRY WITH THE NEW ZELDA PLEASE!!! hehe Anyway - I'll leaving the waa's for all the fanboys. Time to play some Dragon Age on my PC! HAHA

@mattisgod01 I think its more advisable to blame the install base than Nintendo. Its not Nintendo's fault they made some very solid games in the past 2 decades + and have a large fanbase. Its the owners of wiis who, even after a good 3rd party game comes out (No More Heroes?????) chose not to buy it and go with the Nth installment of whatever mario game that Nintendo dishes out. Shame on them for buying garbage from Nintendo .... now they can reap what they sew.

@Penguin227, If you look at all the top selling Wii games they are basically all Made by nintendo, which proves they have basically screwed over all 3rd party developers. I hope 3rd party developers return the favour next generation. Nintendo think they can do everything themselves and wish to keep a monopoly over their console, It seems like bad long term business practice to me.

@penguins227: Mostly people buy it because of the wii remote. I saw another chart where the game was actually the best-selling game of all times. Almost makes me doubt if democracy is the right way to go.

Man, it is funny to see all of the "hardcore" gamers throughout this site, then there are so many more casual gamers buying wii things. I never knew the wii would hold it's ground this much. I still have no CLUE why wii play is so far up there. That game really was terrible.

@jimmy, Until next console range. where inferior technology wont cut it. Sony and Mircrosoft could both cease making consoles and still be some of the biggest corporations in the world. Nintendo live off fads.

im sorry mattisgod, but in most countries the birthrate is higher than the death rate, so there is more likely going to be an increase rather than decrease. and financially Nintendo is the least likely to die off, PS3 being the most likely, as i believe they still loose money off their consoles, if not, have only started making money. Add to that the relative failure of their Bravia TV range, Sony's financial security is far from being stable. Microsoft initially lost some money off each console but soon broke even and made money, where as Nintendo made money from launch and continue to.

Some of those games are concerning. Hopefully Nintendo will die off next generation when the novelty of a childs toy wears off.

Outside of North America and UK, MW2 has easily sold more on PS3.

Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii Wii, STOP IT!!!!!!

James Cameron's Avatar, haha, seems like i wasn't the only one who bought that crap xD

Wait...Modern Warfare 2 PS3 ACTUALLY sold MORE than the 360 version? I know it's just AU, but that's a first.
