AU Shippin' Out Sept 5: Resistance 3

Sony takes players on a road trip across America, shooting plenty of aliens along the way.

The big release this week is Resistance 3 for the PlayStation 3, the final game to be developed by series founder Insomniac Games. It's set several years after the second game, and America has fallen and the Chimera are now in control. The story follows Capelli from Resistance 2 as he travels across the US, encountering numerous resistance groups in a last-ditch effort to inflict a crippling blow against the alien invaders.

Traditionally, the Resistance franchise has prided itself on having large-scale multiplayer battles, but, interestingly, the online multiplayer has been toned down this time around. Insomniac Games has instead opted to stick to smaller eight-vs.-eight bouts, citing a shift towards more intimate firefights.

THQ has also chosen this week to launch its latest foray into the 40,000K universe with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. This one might look and feel a bit like Gears of War, but it's important to remember that Space Marines were using chainswords to rip apart enemies long before the lancer's 2006 debut. To accompany the Ork bloodbath that occurs in each level, the game features a slow-motion ability that lets you marvel at the death and destruction by your hands.

Another incredibly violent game to be gracing the silver screen this week is Rise of Nightmares from Sega. This one marks the first adults-only game to arrive on the Kinect, and it has players hacking away at zombies and monsters with melee weapons.
