AU Shippin' Out Sept 20-23: Gears of War 3

Can Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad battle it out against near-impossible odds this week in the final instalment in the Gears trilogy?

It has been five years since game designer Cliffy B successfully married the humble machine gun with the not-so-subtle chainsaw for a brand-new Xbox 360 franchise: Gears of War. With the third game being released around Australia today, the story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad comes to an end as Epic Games closes out the trilogy and answers questions left by the first two titles.

Can Marcus Fenix's tree-trunk-sized arms turn the tide of the war on Sera?

The Gears of War franchise popularised Horde mode, which has been copied by many other games. For Gears of War 3, Epic has turned the tables and introduced Beast mode. This time around, players will step into the ugly shoes of the Locust and take aim at COG soldiers controlled by the AI. Horde mode hasn't been forgotten, though, getting an upgrade that sees the focus shift towards building fortified positions as opposed to just popping up from behind cover.

While the replica lancers that were released in the US for Gears of War 2 didn't make it to Australia in '08, GameSpot AU is glad to report that Microsoft isn't making the same mistake twice. Exclusive to EB Games in Australia, Gears of War fans can also get their hands on replica gold retro lancers, complete with bayonet. The gun is over 90cm long and makes gun noises when the trigger is pulled. The replica weapon retails for A$148 but is slightly cheaper if you preordered Gears of War 3 through EB Games.

For the racing fans this week, there's also F1 2011. This is Codemasters' second attempt at a fully fledged F1 simulator, with the UK developer correcting several of the first game's major criticisms. All 24 racers from the 12 teams that started the 2011 F1 season are in the game, and there are 19 tracks for players to burn rubber around.
