AU Shippin' Out Oct 4-7: Rage, Dark Souls

It has been 19 years since id Software popularised the first-person shooter genre, but does it still have what it takes to make a good shooter?

Four years ago id Software unveiled the id Tech 5 engine and a new game to go along with it: Rage. After countless trade shows and public demonstrations, it's now time for fans to get behind the wheel of this postapocalyptic action game. Just like in many other games that feature the popular setting, players assume the role of someone who has lost his memory and woken up in an unfamiliar world. While players will spend a good amount of time behind the trigger of a gun in Rage, they will also get to thrash ATVs around the outback, as driving is a big part of the game.

For those who are after a game that's likely to get them fired up and scream out words that are inappropriate to say in front of their mothers, Dark Souls is the game for them. This is the sequel to 2009's blood-boiling Demon's Souls, which was lauded by fans and critics alike for its unique world, great combat mechanics, and brutally difficult gameplay. Dark Souls is a game that won't be for everyone, but for those who get a kick out of beating a boss after countless restarts, then this is one they'll probably want to check out.

The final game worthy of a mention that will arrive in Australia this week is NBA 2K12. This year 2K Sports hopes to settle the "who is the greatest basketballer" debate between fans, with the addition of a new mode called NBA's Greatest. Here players will be able to choose from 15 NBA legends and pit them against each other. Those who preordered NBA 2K12 from EB Games will also be able to choose one of three cover athlete slicks for their game.
