AU New Releases: The Elder Scrolls Online launches for PC

Tamriel goes online.

by

This week, Bethesda makes its MMORPG debut with the release of The Elder Scrolls Online.

The title is part of The Elder Scrolls franchise, set in Tamriel and featuring a new storyline that will relate indirectly to previous games.

The Elder Scrolls Online will launch simultaneously world-wide, with different access times available to players. It will officially launch at 10am Australian Eastern Standard time on Thursday, April 4.

The game will be released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles in June, and only players on the same platform will be able to play together. Bethesda recently defended the game's $15/month subscription fee, saying that the game's "significant" expansion content justifies its cost.

To see more of the game, check out GameSpot's upcoming live-stream schedule, which will feature The Elder Scrolls online all this week.

For more details on what's out this week in Australia, check out the full list below.

Cool game..  Nice graphics.  As far as leveling and combat are concerned there really is nothing new going on its the same old crap.  Kind of reminds me of GW2 combat..  I'm enjoying leveling and the story at the moment.  I'm a little worried about end game though.  Im not into PVP im the PVE kind of guy.  I've heard all kinds of negative and positive info about the end game but i really need to see for myself.  I have this odd feeling that end game will be like GW2..  2-3 months from now we'll see how it's going.  If the end game is recycled garbage i won't be playing.

The game includes multiple pathways to take and different actions you can take that will change to how people around you react to you. (ridiculously new for an MMO). The game has a world that DWARFS the size of any MMO up to this date. It has WAY more story hours you can play with the different factions without the constant revisiting of places you've been to grind. The game does have issues, but overall I would say, go to a friends house and give it a whirl to see if you get hooked. Don't base off of other opinions, just try it yourself (before you buy it I might add.) I loved it and, as you can see by the comments, there are some who hate it. Get your own opinion on the game.

You subscription supporters are completely daft. Your subscriptions are paying for John Cleese's new Bentley.

Avoid this game at all costs, it's HORRIBLE.

The quests include:

-Listen to NPC with overpaid voice actor talk, whilst you nod along having NO DIALOGUE CHOICES (a fundamental ES feature).
-Walk over there.
-Bring me this.

-Kill that and bring me this whilst you walk over there.
-Walk for 20 minutes to find a farmer's lost pig.

-Walk for 30 minutes

-Walking

-Kill stuff which drops random loot, rather than the equipment they are carrying (another ES fail)

-Walk over there

-Talk to another NPC who sends you to walk over there, to kill that thing, which drops the item you must get so that the next NPC will talk at you for a bit whilst you, once again, have zero dialogue choice.

-Avoiding combat because ESO's combat is HORRIBLE and IRRITATING, with worse AI than Skyrim.

-Avoiding combat because you've started to develop RSI + Carpel-Tunnel syndrome both at once

-Growing sick and tired of this awful game

-Uninstalling ESO

Sorry I spoiled the story ending for you boyos.

The game is great, I'm at work now and I can't wait to get home to play. Haven't felt this way about a game in a while. Played it all day yesterday.

Heh.. If only it had a fighting system half as good as the one of D* Souls games I could consider it...

Looks like a really big game that probably shouldn't be MMO.

Why people complain complain about the subscription fee if most of then pay 12€ montly and plus 20€ for a F&/%& mount or 60€ for a char boost?

wait for it to go f2p in 6 months. In the meantime play Neverwinter - its better anyway

Whether subscription fee is required or not will be revealed after the content they are willing to release to the game and its quality.

I've heard a lot of negative feedback about this game while it was at beta, now i'm only hearing good things.

I'm still going to wait for a month and wait for some feedback about its endgame.

Who knows, maybe i'll bury my eternal love for Star Wars and leave this stupid SWTOR game for good this time :).

Oh you haters have no idea what you're missing.  This game is amazing...if you don't play it like your standard mmo.

Plus I don't understand what the fuss is over the price.  It's a $45 game plus your $15 sub.  Big woop.  That's half a night out at the bar.

First off, it is totally stupid when you have to signe in to a website to post and it takes you away from the page you are signing in to.

I played this game for 14 hours yesterday! I couldn't believe how long I played? It is truly an amazing game. The story-line is great, not too long of story telling. It may not use all my graphics card power but It has beautiful graphics. I like how it is open world and that I haven't run into too many kids being stupid. It was a fun game and I can't wait to get home today after work and play some more!

I wouldn't mind the subscription fee, but it seems they've taken everything I loved about Skyrim and changed it.   I loved just being able to sit and wander around and explore, just seeing what I find next.  It was very solitary and that's what I loved about it.  I don't want to run into people online in that world.  It's just not my thing.  I hope it's successful for them though.

gannon27

There has been a lot of backlash over the subscription fee. I really don't mind paying it as long as the content is worth it. I think the pc version will be fine, I just hope the console versions do as well.

Wintermist
Wintermist

I don't mind paying a monthly fee, but I really wish the game wouldn't be so expensive to actually buy. I wish you would just setup a subscription, and be able to download it and play. Since you can't play without a subscription anyway, I don't see why they can't.

@phageling Age of Wushu was the first MMO to have NPCs that reacted differently based on how you played the game.

@Syndicalist Damn dude you gotta stop spamming the chat and chill. So, you don't like it. You don't need to fucking spam the chat and call everyone who likes it daft. I like the game, I hated  Dark Souls (which you seem to like) but I don't go spamming Dark Souls forums spamming what I dislike about the game. But everyone is entitled to the OPINION. So, go get a beer (or whatever other beverage you love) and chill on the couch for a while.

@vadagar1

If you think that those criticising ESO are fans of Blizzard, you are totally deluded and pig-ignorant.

Screw Blizzard and screw WoW. It is boring. Not half as boring as ESO though. ESO takes away most of what makes the ES series great (choices, freedom, rewarding exploration, interesting quests with many ways to approach them), and as an MMO, it takes away most of the things that make MMOs fun and playable (no cursor, useless chat function especially on consoles, no auto-attack at all, shoddy lack of party mechanics and combat that feels inferior to Oblivion).

Is this game 'solid and fun'?

Absolutely not, it is extremely boring, and I actually found it unpleasant to play due to it trying (and failing) to emulate a single-player experience whilst throwing tons of typical MMO rubbish at the player.

I played the beta for 50 hours, and honestly, it wasn't worth playing even for free. Quests are linear, with little-to-no decision-making or choice in anything. My experience with ESO was a series of constant disappointments. Just one terrible piece of garbage after another, and every time I thought it couldn't get worse, I'd be sent for a 5 mile hike to look for a farmer's pig or some other trivial nonsense. Honestly, only an idiot would pay for this.

Conclusion:

If you are a fan of Elder Scrolls, you will hate this horrible, stripped-down linear rubbish. Unless you are so utterly blinded by fanboyism that you'd eat anything labelled 'Elder Scrolls'. But even then, you still wouldn't enjoy it, you would just be pretending to enjoy it to save face after blowing a fortune on this turd. The game seems to go out of its way to contradict Elder Scrolls Lore, turning Elder Scrolls (the actual items) into trivial pvp items and that is just the beginning (I'll avoid spoilers, except for one major one: THIS GAME SUCKS).

If you are a fan of MMORPGs, then you are going to be horribly disappointed because ESO feels and looks designed for consoles, rather than PC. So the chat functions are garbage, the party system is garbage, the lack of a cursor makes it difficult to interact with other players.

AVOID!

zerohournow
zerohournow

@slainta if only you would understand there is a difference between an MMO and game like Darksouls...detailed combat mechanics dont work for a massive multiplayer system. It is like complaining that a plane has poor power steering and slow braking. It isnt meant to only drive around.

"
Oh you haters have no idea what you're missing.  This game is amazing..."

I played the beta quite a lot, and I had looked forward to doing so. It was utter garbage. I am not a 'hater'. I am simply giving an honest view of a game that I have experienced for myself, rather than swallowing marketing and saying 'OMG ITS GONNA BE SOO KEWL'.

"if you don't play it like your standard mmo."

If by 'standard' you mean 'containing simple functionalities that the ESO foolishly lacks', or 'MMOs designed for PC rather than for consoles', then I would gladly do so. The fact is, ESO is horribly inferior to most MMOs out there, and I'm not a big fan of MMOs anyway, especially not ones you need to pay for continued access to, after having ALREADY PURCHASED the damn game. I DO like the Elder Scrolls series though, and ESO is nothing of the sort. It is complete rubbish, and you are a bloody fool!

CoRiNi

@balto70  This is similar to my thoughts. Been playing TES games for ages, and the idea of sharing the world with other people drives me crazy. TES worlds were always only for the player, for the champion, for the hero, he owns them, he rules them, I will never accept the idea of sharing it with anyone else. Call me childish, but that's how the world has grew in me. Good luck to everyone playing the game though, I hope they enjoy it.

Kinguard73
Kinguard73

@gannon27 backlash is likely from console kids since they are not used to sub like a great many more PC users.

Saidrex
Saidrex

@Wintermist ha, for my region it's 80$ and 120$ for imperial edition. Not enough content in the game to justify such price and subsciption. Even most free2play MMO's have more content.

Syndicalist
Syndicalist

@zerohournow

If only you understood the difference between Elder Scrolls and an MMO, you would realise that this game is horrible, and is literally worse than any other MMO I've ever played. Mainly due to it's horrible controls and terrible combat, and it's pathetic attempts to emulate the single-player experience in an MMO.

It fails as an MMO, and it fails HORRIBLY as an Elder Scrolls. After sinking far too much time into the worthless beta, I'll definately be passing on this garbage.

The combat in ESO is absolutely atrocious compared to every other MMO I've ever played, it's REALLY bad. Watered-down Skyrim combat, as if Skyrim combat wasn't crappy enough. Now you can do nothing BUT Skyrim combat, with your friends! WOOT!

Seriously though, this game is garbage and must be avoided at all costs.

Syndicalist
Syndicalist

@lutarian

WRONG. At least Neverwinter has an auto-attack function, and a functional chat+party system. You know...basic functionalities an MMO requires. Oddly missing from ESO in favour of emulating a single-player ES experience, which is completely stripped of choices and freedom.

ESO is GARBAGE! As an ES fan, I am utterly and truly disappointed with ESO.

Syndicalist
Syndicalist

The kids whose parents buy everything for them will be playing ESO after crying so hard to get their parents to 'preorder the imperial edition!!!'. Because nobody who understands the value of hard work, would waste a penny on this trash.

Also, anyone who knows the value of hard-work, and PROPERTY rights, would outright refuse to pay a monthly sub for a game that they have ALREADY PURCHASED and therefore OWN! The idea of having your access to a game revoked or cancelled unless you pay regularly is pure thievery, and only a fanboy would ignore such a blatant violation of our property ownership. It is like RENTING a game on a regular basis rather than actually buying it. ESO is the video game equivalent of living in rented accomodation under an extortionate landlord, for the rest of your life. You only have one choice in the end: move out (stop playing this crap).

I am 27 and I work for a living, with real bills to pay. I played the beta and it isn't even worthy of being F2P. You 10 year old fanboys are a joke. I would not play this garbage if you paid me to. With my balance, I could afford 20 copies of the 'imperial edition' before I pay my rent and utilities this month. But I won't waste a penny on such nonsense, because it's GARBAGE.

BTW, I'm a big fan of ES. ESO is an atrocity though, plain and simple. Any real ES fan will see this.

@Kinguard73 @balto70 There really is no solo campaign.  Since everybody is in the same group whenever you go into any cave, crypt, dungeon, etc. there is always at least 50 other people in there with you.

@Enkhrypthor 3hrs a day is casual?  3hrs on a weekend maybe..  For people like me with a job and kids weekends is all i got for free time.  I don't care about the sub fee.  I don't think this game will keep me interested for more then 3 months.  That's just the way it's been for me lately.  Any and every mmo gets boring after 3 months.  Just can't keep doing the same thing over and over again..  Last time i was subbed for more then 3 months was Lich King expansion for wow.

@Syndicalist @lutarian

The quality of a game has nothing to do with an auto-attack function and a chat+party system.
I guess you don't realize that ESO is a different type of MMO.

It is not stripped of freedom and choices at all. The questing system actually requires quite a bit of choice and the game is setup so you can enjoy it solo or in a group.

ESO is a superior MMO.  I have put in 30 hours in the pre-order launch and it ran shockingly smooth with the best questing and story I have ever seen in any MMO.

phageling
phageling

@Syndicalist  If you rent or own a home then you know that there is practically no such thing as ownership lol. Also you would be correct on the idea of renting the game, except for the fact that the game is worth well over the 60$ you pay for it in content compare to 99% of the games out there. Also they have said that large updates will come every few months. If that turns out to be a lie then it will have been like renting, but if it is correct then you are just getting DLC like EVERY game out there nowadays that actually give updates to people who like the game. By the way, I have to say that if you are such a big fan of ES (and not just a Skyrim fanboy) you have to concede that compared to oblivion or morrowind the combat in ESO trashes those games. I gotta say that I still love Skyrim, but this is nice and different.

ghostofjoemomma
ghostofjoemomma

@Lytnin  Ya i agree it kind of sucks.  Especially when you can't find mining nodes because 10,000 people are farming nodes at the same time.  I dont know how many have been stolen from me.  Lets just say about every other one.  That's definitely something you would never have experienced in any other ES game.  Im trying to adjust..  honestly though some asshole wouldn't stop bugging me the other day trying to get me to join his guild and that got soooo annoying.  You'll feel that single player immersion for a split second until some dude comes jumping out in front of you..  You know one of those guys who constantly hits the space bar and jumps up and down all around you. Or that gold spammer whispers you..... and it's gone.  I remember GW2 had this much hype and positive feedback but once the dust settled..  Then the truth came out.

lutarian
lutarian

@Saidrex

The quests are no where near generic. The quests have interlocking stories with decisions to make. Best questing system of any MMO out there.

NPC's are also not generic. No where near.

Generic locations?  The locations have to do with ES lore. They are not generic.

You obviously know nothing about the game by your comments. Go back to whatever inferior MMO you are playing

Saidrex
Saidrex

@Kinguard73 @Saidrex i played beta, it's empty - generic quests, generic npc, generic everything. THERE ARE NO IN-BUILT VOICE CHAT EVEN, in MMO that so heavily advertised as team game. They already cut corners and not included important features. Potentially - not worth even half of that money (what they could add in future? More generic quests, more generic locations, more generic enemies). As i said generic MMO with lack of content.
