Eager to get a jump on a possibly hot racing subgenre, Acclaim is publishing ATV: Quad Power Racing - the first ever quad-racing title for any home console system. Developed by the European Climax Studio and set for an August 2000 release, ATV: Quad Power Racing promises to bring the bumpy, gritty experience of quad-racing home for the first time, in a very real way.

ATV: Quad Power Racing will feature the four game modes requisite for any racer: championship, single race, time-attack, and a two player. The championship mode will be divided into amateur and pro submodes, while the two-player game will allow for single races and time attacks. The actual layouts of the courses, it seems, will differ depending on what mode is being played; until the amateur mode is completed, the course of the pro race, on the same track, will be blocked off. Conversely, the courses of amateur races are closed off during the pro circuit. It's a cool feature, to be sure, as it could possibly provide some genuine distinction within the championship mode.

You will race on 12 different courses, each set in various types of terrain, including snowy, mountainous, and arid desert ground. Each track will be accompanied by obstacles and alternate paths, such as ramps and shortcuts. While some races will be set on actual circuit tracks, others will take place on natural environments, allowing for both controlled racing and wild dirt-trekking. The game's action will be viewed through three different camera settings, including two chase views and a first-person "headlight cam." The quads, apparently, will behave just as we'd expect them to, engaging in all manner of power slides, and roll-overs, while sustaining actual, discernable cosmetic damage.

There are 12 quads available, with half of them open from the get-go and half locked in the game's pro championship. Each vehicle will have differing stats in the categories of top speed, grip, and suspension. You will have six brave jockeys to choose from to pilot the quads, though Acclaim has revealed no facts as to whether they'll be actual pro drivers.

We'll undoubtedly uncover more on this title in the near future, so keep your eyes here for a hands-on preview as the game's August release date nears.
