Atlus commandeering R-Type Command

Turn-based strategy installment in Irem's classic side-scrolling shooter series to invade PSPs on May 6.

In 2004, Irem released R-Type Final, which was billed as the last installment in the classic side-scrolling shooter series that began in arcades circa 1987. However, far from being left for dead, Irem's classic R-Type series experienced a renaissance of sorts in late 2006 and early 2007 when the first and third installments in the franchise were given new life on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.

"Final" is typically always open to interpretation.

The reception to R-Type on the Wii VC was apparently positive enough for Irem to resuscitate the series for another intergalactic mission in Japan last year, where the developer released R-Type Tactics. Now, Atlus USA has announced today that it will be fueling up Irem's iconic space fighter for the North American market with R-Type Command, set to cruise onto the PlayStation Portable on May 6.

R-Type Command is a departure from the series' shoot-'em-up roots. Playing into Atlus' affinity for all things role-playing, turn-based, or strategic, the newest R-Type offers tactical gameplay in a war to save humanity against the nefarious Bydo alien race. R-Type Command features more than 100 different units for players to deploy, each of which comes with various upgrade and customization options.

The game also allows players for the first time to take control of the Bydo in their bid to conquer Earth. This will undoubtedly play into the game's local head-to-head multiplayer mode, where players can compete against one another in ad hoc battles for two.

R-Type Command has been rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older and will retail for $39.99. For more on the game, check out R-Type Command's Web site, which went live today.

R-Type Final was, I'm sad to admit, the only R-Type game I was actually capable of beating. Loved the 'Gran Turismo of space shooters' to death, I did. That said, I wonder how interesting a strategy game based on the series would be. I mean, all there really is to know about R-Type is the R-9 ships and the Bydo, really. No characters or universe to speak of. It's going to need a heck of a story to stand out in the crowd.

I love R-Type but I'm not sure what will come out with all this departure from its roots.

I loved R-Type for a long time and now the series is getting breath of fresh air with an turn-based atmosphere. Bring on the PS3 version!

meh the RTS idea doesnt make me happy at all. however my question is where are the shooters like this and others of the kind on the next gen consoles. how about "Einhander 2" on PS3, someone acost Square to make this or make Ikaruga 2 for us....old school side scrollers and/or vertical space shooters shouldnt be a dead species in the gaming!

Anything atlus wraps themselves around usually through a sereis of painfull mutations becomes something wonderfully different and charmingly good. Its like a teenager going through puberty, ounce the acne clears up and the voice pitching settles theve become an adult. Physically, not mentally. that takes years of practice and menial labor/low paying jobs.

Yes, sweet! Thanks once again, Atlus! I would have preferred it to be another 2D shooter since they're much rarer than SRPG these days but i'll still gladly take this one!

"The game also allows players for the first time to take control of the Bydo in their bid to conquer Earth." Sounds cool!

Lol, I've always loved Atlus games. Especially Ogre Battle 64! One of my favourites, if not my favourite game of all time! Can't wait to try this one out.

I suppose R-Type Final was the final game of the typical sidescrolling shmup genre...though I'm really curious about R-Type Tactics and how it works out or if it's even good.
