Today graphics manufacturer ATI announced its new Avivo technology suite that's designed to improve video and display image quality and reduce CPU utilization. ATI's next-generation video cards will feature hardware-assisted video transcoding that will make it easier for systems to transcode video for a variety of playback devices, including the Sony PSP.

The video cards will also have built-in H.264, VC-1, and MPEG-2 hardware-decode support for low-CPU-utilization video playback. Video capture and TV tuner cards will also feature additional capture improvements, such as automatic gain control, 12-bit analog-to-digital converters, 3D comb filtering, and hardware noise reduction. All of ATI's next-generation products will improve progressive-scan video output with vector-adaptive de-interlacing.

Avivo technology will be available in ATI Theater 550-based products and upcoming 3D graphics cards expected to be announced in the next month.
