Atari walks plank with Pirates

Publisher boards Playlogic's swashbuckling game as distribution partner; PC game sets sail for retail in September.

Pirates, pirates, pirates--those peg-legged, rum-swigging parrot keepers seem to be all the rage these days, even in the gaming industry. Atari is now jumping on the bandwagon, as today the company announced it has reached a deal to be a distribution partner with Playlogic for the PC game Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales.

The game is being developed by Akella, the Russian studio behind other eye-patch epics Sea Dogs, Age of Sail II, and Pirates of the Caribbean, which was published by Bethesda and based on the popular film.

In the game, players fulfill their seafaring fantasies by putting on the pantaloons of the sea bandit Blaze or his fiery sister, Beatrice. The role-playing game will task adventurers with managing a crew, navigating the open seas, and of course, getting mad booty. The game's multiplayer mode supports up to 16 players and features deathmatch, capture the fort, and defend the convoy gametypes.

Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales is rated T for Teen and will be released in September. For more on the game, head over to GameSpot's previous coverage.

Sounds like an interesting game... Maybe the multiplayer will put this over the edge if they do it right.

They never made a patch for Pirates of the Caribbean at least not for the North American version of the game to correct the bugs in that game but they sure did make one for the Russian version of it,for that reason alone I won't buy another game made by Akella until I am sure that the bugs in the game have been taken care of. Have you even tried playing Pirates of the Caribbean? That game was actually pretty amazing for the price Once you get the right mod for it anyway Im hoping this will be alot like it Cause tbh PotC had basically nothing to do with the film too much :/ Just a few references and the Black Pearl This should be a swish game

There are two screenshots for this game which are placed erroneously. The pictures of the Final-Fantasy-esque swords and trails of blood, that's their other game "Captain Blood" - so, in essence, these two screenshots are misplaced: http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2006/129/479174_20060510_screen001.jpg http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2006/129/479174_20060510_screen002.jpg Those are NOT from "Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales", but "Age of Pirates: Captain Blood"- which looks ridiculous to me.. Caribbean Tales looks splendid however.. and Akella has a good track-record.

For me, this sounds... commercial. Anyway, I'll take a look at it, to see if it's a good game.

This game is SO overdue for release and I'm so tired of postponements and unwillingness to give any solid date that I have lost all interest in ever purchasing this game. The september is an ETA with no solid date and is given only for EU and not other region releases. Wanted it as Sea Dogs II. Woulda bought it this month. I'm not waiting any longer.

They do have a good track record with pirates games, and I like myself a mighty Yaaar! as much as anyone else.

Akella has a good track record with pirate games. Their other 2 were very good looking and had a great sense of immersion. Their first one was inspired by the original Sid Meier game. Maybe not as cutesy as Sid's new version or as addictive, but still very fun. I'm looking forward to it.

LordDeArnise I totally agree with you, Sid Meier's Pirates! was one of the most addictive games I've ever played. But this still sounds interesting, I've always liked swashbuckling andd pillaging! :-)

I wonder if they are going for a Pirates of the Caribbean feel like from BVG that was a good game for the PSP but most pirate games for the PC are weak but would be cool to see it not Pirates are sweet and I hope this will be a cool game.

If it's anywhere short of Sid Meier's Pirates, then it's not worth it.
