Atari to sell RollerCoaster Tycoon, Test Drive franchises at auction

Bankrupt publisher hoping to bring in at least $22 million from upcoming asset auctions.

Bankrupt publisher Atari Inc., the US branch of French owner Atari S.A., has failed to find a buyer for its portfolio of franchises and will not attempt to sell them off piecemeal.

The Wall Street Journal reports that bidding on a pool of game franchises and the Atari name itself will start at $15 million.

The minimum bid for the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise is $3.5 million, while potential buyers must pay at least $1.5 million for the Test Drive series.

Minimum bids totaled around $22.2 million, according to a court filing Wednesday.

Atari Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in January. According to the Wall Street Journal, its investment banker reached out to 180 would-be buyers, with about half agreeing to pursue purchases. However, only 15 actually submitted bids, none of which were approved by Atari.

Thus, Atari Inc. now plans to sell its brands on a franchise-by-franchise basis during auctions beginning next month. The Humongous, Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise, and Math Gran Prix franchises are going for $500,000, while the Total Annihilation series will be available with a $250,000 floor price.

Before the auctions can take place, a judge must approve of the sale process, something Atari hopes can happen during a June 11 hearing. Bids must then be submitted by July 10 ahead of auctions to take place July 16, 17, 18, and 19. If all goes to plan, Atari will seek final approval of all sales during a hearing on July 24.

Atari is also seeking permission to sell games "of minor value" separate from the official auctions. None of these titles were specified.

Roller Coaster Tycoon was my first love on pc gaming and Enclave. I loved it so much that i used to have a4 sheets with my planning of the park, i was taking it that serious. Hope someone buys the rights preferably a lunatic like me at least i know it will be in good hands.

Hell, if Atari had released a new Roller Coaster Tycoon game in the past 7 years, they might still be around (If only for another year or two.)

Maybe we could get a proper RollerCoaster Tycoon 4. You know, something with 3D visuals and freedom of RCT3 and the gameplay mechanics (one objective over a long period of time rather than mini objectives that can be completed at any time) from RCT/RCT2.

I hope EA does NOT BUY OR GET Rollercoaster Tycoon... that would be ABSOLUTELY DISASTROUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  SOMEONE SAVE THIS FRANCHISE FOR GOD SAKE!!!!  ......

Maybe if Atari put out a RCT sequel a little quicker, they might not have found themselves bankrupt and trying to sell it off.

I liked Test Drive Unlimited quite a bit. The second one was missing something and wasn't quite as special, though.

Alone in the Dark! Sell that one!

It's original creator is dying to make a remake of the first one so get on with it already!

Id love to see a new Roller Coaster Tycoon, with realistic graphics and ride physics. Imagine what they could do with the hardware available now! Just don't palm it off to EA, who would slap on more of their always online crap, aswell as only let us build the smallest parks..well fun fairs

Hopefully whoever buys RollerCoaster Tycoon does something with it. We need a new one. You know, so long as it's not EA.

I was building Roller Coaster Tycoon 1&2 parks for about 7 years, straight. I even managed to find the Roller Coaster Tycoon Pinball Machine in a Games Arcade.

I's love to see another Roller Coaster Tycoon. Though Topping 3 will be very very difficult.

Roller Coaster Tycoon is, like, my entire childhood. Maybe it had more to do with drowning, trapping, and other wise destroying the guests, but it was good times....good times.

A new Roller Coaster Tycoon would be epic if they did it right. It's hard to top Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 and 3 though.

So what publisher should grab the Atari name and symbol?  CDProjekt?  Deep Silver?  Activision... oh, that would be an irony!

"The Humongous, Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise, and Math Gran Prix franchises are going for $500,000, while the Total Annihilation series will be available with a $250,000 floor price."

Really? If I was a dev I would just create my own franchise rather than buy some brands no one has heard of.

*Crossing my fingers Roller Coaster Tycoon goes to a good dev*

@vackillers I agree, EA ruins EVERYTHING!!!!! The only reason they are still in business is because of fuutball, which they have made sure they have no competition. Plus the jocks keep buying thier fuutball, not gamers. I really would like to see maybe mojang get Rollercoaster TYCOON! Imagine getting updates for years, new parks, rides, challenges, etc.) at no additional cost! Theres a thought EA! EA Kills everything it touches, but will never go away because of FUUTBALL. EA makes me hate fuutball and all the people that continue to keep paying for that shit year after year after year after year.

I hope it goes to a good home as well.
I highly doubt Chris Sawyer would have any intrest in overseeing anything to do with RCT. He has expressed his feelings in wanting to focus elsewhere. He has done what he wanted to do in RCT and RCT2.
Not to mention the years of legal battles and litigation, countless hours he spent fighting for the royalties Atari agreed to, but never paid him. Giving Chris Sawyer the bird and screwing him over, royally....

Draggo_
Draggo_

@Ceskax Rockstar wouldn't be a bad choice, would be a fifty trillion times better then anything EA would do with it.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@ElfShotTheFood It's true, they came out with a post on their forums in 2010 was it? About a "Possible" future RTC, and then years later, they come out with a lousy, POS, not even half done portable version!?
They had the rights to one of the best, PC gaming franchies of all time for years, and what did they do with it? They pissed it away, shame on them.

inthepastxx
inthepastxx

@ElfShotTheFood That's not the reason why they went bankrupt... Them simply rushing out games would have put them under quicker.

They had no money to make more games or sequels to games.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@Icepick_Trotter I feel for the original creator, most likely going nuts with countless new, great ideas for a remake, and Atari is sitting on it.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@Chris_53 RCT can be a huge hit, as a real full version hasn't been released for years! Give it to EA though and it will become crap just like everthing else EA screws up. Just like Simshity, not one for years, that was the only game they did well, but that was years ago. They took a big crap on Simcity, and would do the same to RCT.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@Mario_VS_DK Agree, i've mentioned i'd like to see possibly mojang get RCT, i'm sure they could do something good with it. Plus seeing as they are smaller, if they paid for it, you bet they wouldn't just let it sit around, they would be developing a game right away.

@Korvus85 I still play RCT originall once in a while, have my files saved for over a decade now.

@Bretar81 was addicted too? I still play that game, havent played another game close to that addicting for this long

@farcorners I wish I had the money to buy a RCT pinball machine, I'd love to have one.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@craigprime Yeah, it would be nice if they brought that back, of course today it would give it a T rating, which is why they got rid of it. When you were bored however, or your park was failing because all of your rides were "too old" and nobody would pay anything to ride them. Then at that point it was amusing to trap them all in one square, put some water beneath, and then delete the square. Watching a few thousand guests all crammed into one square and then all drown in a tiny, tiny square of water, not one could swim just inches to shore haha.

Cant be happier it went to a nice publisher. Looking forward to what Take2 interactive can do.

BearzUnlimited

@csward Total Annihilation is definitely not a brand no one has heard of. It's a completely badass real-time strategy from the 90's, which won numerous GOTY awards and is widely acclaimed as one of the best RTS games ever made. It was also the first RTS to have 3D units and terrain.

Though I agree that nobody cares about those other franchises, and I have no idea why their starting price is higher than TA.

Draggo_
Draggo_

@Tixylixx Same, Hey EA, news flash! Your not a dominating PC game publisher, Your not BLIZZARD!!! Stop trying to act like it and put your games on steam, your just pissing people off!

@Tixylixx Don't worry after they cut another few hundred jobs to buy it they will once again fail to do anything right and it will be back on the market in a month.

vackillers

@Draggo_ @vackillers Indeed... just about any one except EA would be good enough for me... Haven't heard anything on this in the last 2 months though, I wonder who actually did end up getting it...

Draggo_
Draggo_

@bssauter13 @Bretar81 Same here, I wish they would bring back the goals such as "this many guests" with "this rating" by "this year" so what if it's year 4 or year 5 even? They could still incude a fast forward option if you wanted to speed ahead so you wouldn't have to wait.
Unless like me, you pause the game constantly micromanaging every detail and squeezing every dollar you could, pausing the game and changing entry price based on each guests entry and every time it rained, etc.

@OldKye @Tixylixx But it'll be better if RCT or TD doesn't get in their hands in the 1st place.

@OldKye @ganonshin Well in that case ill bid $20.01, lol, your out. I just might get to make Pong 2 and live the dream!!!

KaSeRRoR
KaSeRRoR

@Draggo_ Idk though. I remember there was quite a bit of "Tychoon" games. Even expansions to them. They even had like 6 Test Drives I think! LoL They just never "improved" anything in my opinion. Just kept coming out with more of the same!

>=)

Draggo_
Draggo_

@KaSeRRoR @Draggo_ True about the Test Drives. The Tycoon games however had nothing to do with RCT or much with Atari, It's just RCT was so amazingly popular, everyone started sticking "TYCOON" in their games name. Most of them had nothing to do with Atari, just tons of people put "TYCOON" in their name, so people would buy it, and people did.
Best example would be Zoo TYCOON, it's by Blue Fang Games and Microsoft Studios, Atari was not involved at all.
