Atari has today announced that Zombie Studios is utilizing the latest Unreal technology from Epic Games to develop a futuristic first-person action game called Shadow Ops: Red Mercury for the PC and Xbox. In the game, you'll assume the role of an elite Delta Force operative who has been handpicked by the National Security Agency to pursue a Russian double agent in possession of some highly dangerous materials. The agent in question has discovered information on a secret substance known as Red Mercury that can be used as a nuclear accelerant, and it's up to you to get it back before it's used to build backpack nuclear devices and sold to terrorist organizations.

The game will consist of some 20 single-player levels set in such locations as Middle Eastern cities and towns, secret Russian military bases, and areas of the Philippines, Bosnia, and Western Europe. As you progress through the game, you'll be required to perform a variety of different missions, including hostage rescue, demolition, and working as a bodyguard. International special forces from the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, and Germany will be featured in the game, and though you'll be fighting alongside these forces for much of the game, there will be times when you'll be forced to go up against them.

In addition to the single-player game, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury will feature a number of different multiplayer gameplay modes, including deathmatch, team deathmatch, plant the bomb, capture the flag, and escort. It's not yet clear how many players the PC version of the game will support, but the Xbox version will feature split-screen play for up to four players and Xbox Live support for up to 16 players. We'll bring you more information on Shadow Ops: Red Mercury, which is currently scheduled for release in June 2004, as soon as it becomes available.
