Assassin's Creed Utopia brings city-building to iOS, Android

Ubisoft and Gree team up for downloadable city-building and strategy game with asynchronous 3D battles.

Ubisoft's popular Assassin's Creed franchise is heading to a new genre. The publisher today announced Assassin's Creed Utopia, a city-building strategy game for iOS and Android. The game is in development at Ubisoft and social gaming house Gree and will arrive this winter.

City-building comes to the Assassin's Creed franchise in Utopia.

Assassin's Creed Utopia is set during the early colonial history of America, just like this October's Assassin's Creed III, and follows how the Assassins might have left their mark on American history.

Assassin's Creed Utopia combines city-building and battle mechanics, with players carving out a secret colony of Assassins in the New World. Gamers must then defend their encampments from invaders through asynchronous 3D battles.

It is not clear if Assassin's Creed Utopia will tie in to Assassin's Creed III, which launches October 30 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Wtf is wrong with the developers these days? Stop making these overhyped games, along with new cod,bf and halo.. At least TRY to make new games or focus on older series

Hmmm...no, Utopia...OR assassins! Can't coexist!

LOL! Perfect; make your civilization, your rival develops assassins, your whole civilization gets overthrown or else massacred!

Of course it's aimed at raking money from casual gamers; it's going to be released on iOS and Android platforms ffs. Don't know why everyone's complaining.

Assassins of Empires? Age of Creed? Age of Templars?

Assasin's Greed, more likely.

This is probly why he said AAA titles are dying out, he wants you to think that so more people will buy this garbage.

i don't see how an isometric builder-thing like sim city can have anything to do with assassins creed.

Ubisoft announced this a year ago that they will be teaming up with Gree for a "new" type of gameplay for Assassin's Creed... If you are new to the series, you might have missed out the fact the Assassin's Creed has always been using several spin-offs, catering several media formats, for the expansion of its universe and explaining certain plot holes in the story. Bloodlines in PSP, Liberation in Vita, Assassin's Creed 1 and 2 ports on the mobile phones, Gameloft's Altair's Chronicles for the touchscreen platforms, the DS/iOS Discovery, Embers as a CGI movie, Lineage as a live-action short film, Ascendance as a graphic novel styled animation and a lot more... The fact that this game is made by a dedicated social-networking game company bodes well in terms of maintenance compared to the ill-fated Project Legacy and the short-lived Path to Revelations which were also similar games (both games being homologous to that of Mafia Wars of Zynga). Godspeed Ubisoft specially to you Mr. Hutchinson and your team! AC3 will kick-ass!

By looking at the screenshot, I've lost all respect for Ubisoft. This is something to blatantly make money and to keep people in a job and to slap the Assassin Creed name on it! It something Zynga would do!

You guys have massive problems if an inoffensive mobile game upsets you that much. Just saying.

dallask

Why is everyone so upset? Sounds like a good inexpensive add on to keep you occupied until AC3 comes out. And if it gives you some bonus material in AC3 then that would be cool. Mass Effect 3 did something similar and it worked pretty well.

did they take that picture from age of empires? hah

I highly doubt I'll play this unless it offeres a Demo, but hey, at least they are trying with these things.

Okay, so a franchise that started as a third-person, open world action game where the primary objective was to stealthily assassinate individual targets is now becoming Age of Empires???

Hahah, if its a good city builder game ill get it just to have a cool city builder on my phone. I could care less if it has the words "Assassins Creed" in the title.

Hey Ubisoft, I've got some great ideas for future games:

1. Assassins Creed Formula One Racer

2. Assassins Creed Call of Duty 15th Century Edition

3. Assassins Creed Super Mech Combat,

4. Assassins Creed Ultimate Jet dog-fighter,

4. Assassins Creed Civilization Turn based strategy

5. World of Assassins Creed: Knights of the Old Crusade

6. The Assassin Scrolls VI: Creedlandia

7. Minecreed

8. Command and Creed: Kane's and Yuri's revenge

9. Assassins and Portal guns

10. Super Street Assassin fighter

Don't worry Ubisoft there are still plenty of ways to branch out your over-milked franchise.

What the heck does this have to do with AC?!?   LOL...  Marketing people...

I don't think it's going to help the AC franchise to have a game like this using its name. Let's see.

Sounds cool unless the make it necessary to make in-game purchases to actually advance. I'm tired of the nickle and dime model.

haha all the spin offs are a bit much but i can guarantee that ACIII will live up to the name of I and II because of A.Hutchinson I mean he's done some seriously thorough research. Royal Welsh Fusiliers and U.S Navy Seals that's backing from real military people.

d_kell411

@romanz159 Funny...but this isn't as much of a far-fetched concept as you'd think. If you've played the franchise, you'll know that Ubisoft puts a great deal of emphasis on their cities. Ever since AC1, they boast that cities are "accurate portrayals"...they use old schematics and records to build upon their game.

So...city building is kind of Ubisoft's key sales point. This is just the first time they've ever let players do it. Besides, let's be honest, Ubisoft is good enough to make anything you just listed work...so why complain?

@bdixon76 These kinds of games always have that model.  I'm sure this won't be any different.
