Assassin's Creed Movie Delayed to 2016

The upcoming Assassin's Creed movie, from 20th Century Fox and starring Michael Fassbender, will not arrive in theaters in August 2015 as previously expected. The movie has now shifted to sometime in 2016, according to a details from The Hollywood Reporter.

The site's sources say the movie's scripts has gone through "several rewrites" and the production itself has "grappled with scheduling issues." Fassbender will play the lead role in the film, which will be directed by Justin Kurzel, who directed Fassbender in next year's Macbeth. No other cast members have been announced.

Talking about the movie last month, Fassbender said Assassin's Creed picture will be respectful of the game, no doubt a nice thing to hear for fans of the franchise. At the same time, however, Fassbender pointed out that "we also want to bring new elements to it and perhaps our own vision of things that already exist in the game."

The announcement of the movie's delay was made in conjunction with the news that Fox is moving forward on a Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

Ubisoft has a total of six movies in the pipeline. In addition to Assassin's Creed, the French publisher is making movies based on its Far Cry, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon franchises. In all instances, Ubisoft will retain creative control.

Two new Assassin's Creed games are due out on November 11: Assassin's Creed Unity for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC; and Assassin's Creed Rogue for Xbox 360 and PS3.
