Assassin's Creed II now free on Xbox Live

Gold subscribers can grab digital version of 2009 action game for free until July 31 as part of Games With Gold promotion.

As part of Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion, the 2009 action game Assassin's Creed II is now free for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Gamers have until July 31 to download a free copy.

Along with the offer for a free copy of Assassin's Creed II, Microsoft has cut the prices of various Assassin's Creed digital content through the end of the month. Check out Microsoft's blog for a detailed rundown of marked-down content.

The Games With Gold promotion was announced during Microsoft's E3 2013 briefing last month. It gives Gold subscribers free games--to keep--on the 1st and 16th day of every month leading up to the release of the Xbox One in November.

By comparison, free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers across the world this month include Battlefield 3 and Saints Row: The Third.

Last I checked kids, if your Playstation Plus membership ends, so does your ownership of the so called "free games".

Thank you Microsoft. Enjoying the hell out of this franchise for the first time, and it might make me take a look at the rest of the series. I wasn't that impressed with AC1 when I tried it out on my PS3 many moons ago, but this one is holding my attention in all the right ways. I don't usually like to start off-center of a game series but am willing to give the following titles a chance after this one. I don't have a hard drive yet (AC2 fits perfect on my 16gig flash drive) but if the rest of the games coming are as good as this, and they aren't titles I don't already have or played, I will be getting a hard drive very very soon. You're restoring my faith in "da box". Peace.

it's nice that MS has finally caught onto the free game bandwagon but when compared to PS plus giving out XCOM Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 in just the last month the value is very clearly tilted towards Sony's end.

If this is a reflection of the Gold to PS Plus service of next gen consoles I feel sorry for xbox owners.

Thanks for the tip.  I was planning on getting back to that franchise.

Give free Xbox exclusive games like Dead or Alive series or the remastered version of the original Halo series. I seriously don't mind great old games.

Careful, MS. We wouldn't want to drown in all that value you're overdelivering.

It's a good chance for those who haven't played ACII yet. It was the climax of the series back when it wasn't a "milk it down till it dries" franchise.

This has been bargain bin fodder for years and you have either played it by now or don't like AC or at least have a friend you could borrow the game from.

@jark888 Nooo! Not dead or Alive, I've already got that, and I just finished Halo 3 and 4 so I'm like totally burned out on Halo. Sorry. ;-)

@o016945 But are the games for keep? I never renewed my plus membership because you cannot keep the free games. These are FOR KEEPS, regardless of your Gold status.

@o016945 Facts aren't biased. You may not like them but facts are facts.

@o016945 Not that I'm trying to defend Eddie's journalistic 'integrity' or anything, but making a factual comparison doesn't exactly constitute bias

@Kyrylo Oh wait what? Let's see ... I bet you were going to use that old Sonybot cliché that Gamespot is biased against Sony ... give it up already ... that's so old and predictable that you should be buried with along with it.

@Naylord I tried the first AC and didn't like it. I downloaded this one because it was free and was very happy that it eases you into the game play instead of just throwing you into the water expecting you to swim like the first one. That's why I never played this one but I'm loving it now. Microsoft came through for me this time. .... this time.

@mrfaceman23 C'mon be fair.  You KNOW if they had left that line out of the article, fanboys would by crying that GS was IGNORING what Sony 'has been doing for months'  thus PROVING that GS was a tool of Microsoft.  You just cannot win with these fanatics.

@mrfaceman23 The fact is videogame wars will never cease and PS plus does offer seriously better and newer games than the Xbox gold.

betheltony

@lowkey254 @o016945 @kohle36  No, he has a point.  Previous articles published by Eddie have talked about PSN by itself, not adding details about Xbox Live.  He just happens to throw in a comparison (when there was no other comment about PS) at the end of the article.  So, while the facts themselves are not bias, its the trending of Eddie's articles, and convenient presentation of comparison facts, that show the potential bias.
I do anticipate MS to continue to deliver full retail games henceforth, to keep pace (or compete) with PS having offered the 'better value' as of yet.

I feel like this and it is an opinion but ive always hated the console wars i was with nintendo first when i was a very small boy then i when to PS with my brother we stayed together until xbox came out then i branched out why(not because i hate sony) because i wanted to be different from my brother have something of my own something new and ive stayed with them since me and my brother had our own personal console gen war for like 5 minutes until we realized we have BOTH same with the 360 and the PS3 we moved together as adults(im 21) he stayed in the room next to mine and there were times i woke up to see him on my 360 and vice versa...long story short console wars are useless what would you say if sony and microsoft worked together to bring you something the best of both worlds..and as for these wars its clear they listen to us but we are all little voices scattered all over the place one yelling xbox one yelling Playstation what if we all huddled together and yelled BETTER GAMES CHEAPER PRICES BLAH BLAH BLAH we would be heard and they would be scared why because we are the consumers and they need US!! more than we need them...

@Broyds @flyingdutchdog3 @mrfaceman23 You have to think of it as a marketing strategy to get users to upgrade to a hard drive, so Microsoft can afford to let people keep the games. So many 4gig XBoxes out there like mine. I was happy with my 16 gig flash drive for game saves but now I'm seriously considering getting a HD to store all the games coming out. AC2 got a 9.0 on Gamespot and it's a major favorite among fans, so don't say this first title is a bad acquisition because it's not, so you don't know what the quality of future free titles will be, but whether I get a hard drive or another flash drive to store the next title, I'm enjoying the free games big time! Tomorrow is the next free title and I hope I want it.

@Broyds I think you have overdosed on PS Plus and are now living in la la land ... Your primitive response reveals an insecure and myopic Sonybot. You cannot for some reason, see beyond your own words thus I think you are the complete lunatic. If you think Assassin's Creed II was not a top quality game than you are really only what we call in this business, a pure fanboy for Sony. How old the game is has no bearing or relevance to what you are driveling on about. I have a PS3 as well and I'll be damned if I ever subscribe to PS Plus. With the demise of the PS3 in the future you will be part of that crowd you call lunatics who have lost all their games. Boo Hoo.

Broyds
Broyds

@flyingdutchdog3 @Broyds @mrfaceman23  For christ sake do any of you read what I put?  Yes you do lose the games if you end your subscription with PS Plus but again I will say it you would be a complete lunatic if you cancelled.  With Microsoft letting you keep the games its a safe bet the games aren't going to be the type of top quality games we expect from plus.

FlakeyCrust

@Broyds @ddoggbritt16 @mrfaceman23 My PSPlus sub ran out and I couldn't play the free games on my hard drive. Whether that changed or not doesn't matter, I have never renewed my PS PLUS account because of that. Free means free. Not Free to borrow for a while.

flyingdutchdog3
flyingdutchdog3

@Broyds Maybe you should re-read your comment and think for a while. It does matter if and when you cancel Plus .... you loose everything. At best it's just a rental srvice. As far as who is an idiot I think your first in line for being a bot and a snot.

Broyds
Broyds

@ddoggbritt16 @Broyds @mrfaceman23  Yeah and if you read my comment it doesn't matter what it was like at first look at what it is like now.  And you would be an idiot if you cancelled.
