Assassin's Creed IV, The Last of Us nominated for 2014 Writers Guild Awards

Other titles nominated include Batman: Arkham Origins, God of War: Ascension, and Lost Planet 3; winner will be announced on February 1.

by

The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominations for outstanding achievement in writing for video games for this year's Writers Guild Awards that will be held February 1, 2014. The nominees are:

To be considered, the game must have been released between December 1, 2012 and November 30, 2013 and credited writers needed to have been members of the WGA Videogamer Writers Caucus.

If Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag wins this year, it will be two straight victories for Ubisoft, as PlayStation Vita game Assassin's Creed III: Liberation won last year. In 2011, Ubisoft also won for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

2014 marks the seventh year of the Video Game Writing Award, which honors "outstanding achievement" for writing in games.

Of course, the Writers Guild Awards also honor the television and movie businesses, among others. AMC's Breaking Bad is nominated for best drama, while Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street has been nominated for best adapted screenplay.

why did the game that actually deserves it(Bioshock) get robbed so blatantly over so much mediocre nominees? screwed up politics right there for 2K, even their GTA got robbed over a rushed out typical god of war spinoff turd.

in conclusion: this thing is a complete joke, just another worthless gratification for the fanboys.

No game but the Last of Us should win this....

Oh, so Gone Home must not have met the criteria for inclusion then.

A lot of negativity here that I can't agree with, as expected... I'm out of here!

video games have the worst writing. It's like comparing rotten fruit.

Now, before you post anything, remember this saying: "Opinions vary".

At least not Bioshock Infinite....big relief.

But AC4??? It's the AC with the worst writing so far.... :/

Ok ... Last of us and Arkham origins are pretty Nice but the same cant be said about the writing of Ac4. The game was good but the story was Awful and all over the place.. it seemed like Edward was just a filler character in the midst of all the other pirates and it falls flat most of the times. His character is decent though . And my question is where is "BIOSHOCK INFINITE" I mean its not a masterpiece but its almost perfect and it definitely deserves a nomination and I personally think the writing is on par with last of us. Heck i think its even better(Yes I Said ...Shut it Fanboys)

Assassins Creed has excellent writing. People who think that writing only constitutes dialogue and character interaction during cutscenes should take a hike. The way Assassins Creed has always blended its own fiction seamlessly with actual historical events is truly amazing. The amount of planning that goes into that with factual based research should be commended. I can't think of any series in videogame history that goes into such detail.

The Last of Us deserves the nomination. On the other hand, I thought AC IV was terribly written. The story was incredibly predictable, character development was either absent or disjointed, and as soon as the story actually began to pick up, it abruptly ended. For me, it was definitely the worst of the entire series, which is amazing since I didn't think it could get any worse after AC III. At least in AC III the story was promising in the beginning. In AC IV it was disappointing throughout; it's pretty clear that it was simply designed to get the player from point A to point B and to open up new possibilities for the open world portion of the game. The game wasn't terrible by any means since roaming the seas as a pirate was a blast, but a nomination for writing....come on.

As a member of the WGA, remember that not every developer hires a member of the WGA Videogamer Writers Caucus to write a game's story -- that's why some of the games you'd expect to see on this list are absent.

Even though they weren't great games, Origins, Ascension, and Lost Planet all had great stories and deserved to be nominated. Infinite belongs there too.

Glad to see that Arkham Origins is on the list. While it's basically Arkham City 1.3 as far as layout and gameplay goes, the story was actually pretty good. Hands down though I'd have to give it to the Last of Us for top nods. Naughty Dog has some amazing writers and can craft stories and characters that immediately draw an audience in. How they're not writing incredible films I don't know.

Sad not to see Bioshock in this list, for me it was the best narrative of last year (as far as games go).

Umm, Lost Planet 3 had a story? After reading the review, it guess it did have story. You learn something every day :P.

All of the games are nominated because people who were in the guild wrote them for those who are wondering.

Lost Planet, GoW, and Ass-creed?? Are you kidding??

Finally, a decent list of games up for an award they deserve (not sure about GoW though) and not being plagued by the undeserved presence of GTA 5

Lost Planet 3?...Really?

If anything but The Last of Us wins this, I smell foul play. Though strange that Bioshock Infinite and Beyond: Two Souls weren't even nominated.

@hystavitoNo  more like the WGA was able to see past the political correct nature of the work, and see it for what it is a mediocre mystery.

@shreddyzWhat are you trying to compare it to though? Video game writing is better than anything on TV and most movies right now, but not as good as books.

@pozium observatory is pretty neat idea though...they re-skinned NSA spying program, put it into assassins creed game and jobs done. The story is not very engaging but the game is super.

battlefront1943

@shingui5The last Assassin's Creed had a really good narrative...  just many were too busy running aimlessly around the open world to pay attention to it.  For me, this was the best storyline since AC2.

hystavito
hystavito

@divinejester@hystavitoWell I initially was going to comment along those lines :), but I didn't wanna do the research to confirm eligibility.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if writers or people from literary communities have very different opinions on game stories than the gaming press people.

@DiverseGamer @grey_fox1984 The writing definitely wasn't the problem- people often cite the lack of interactivity/significant choice; but it definitely had better writing than God of War: Ascension (which was probably the weakest story of any GoW game)

(personally, I quite enjoyed Beyond, but I do see how it can be polarizing)

LordCrash88
LordCrash88

@heguain @LordCrash88 @shreddyz Compared to the movies industry and especially books, video games have indeed a poor writing. There are some very rare exceptions but imo it's still true.

@DiverseGamer @Grenadeh @grey_fox1984 Heavy Rain isn't a game and your apology is accepted. It blows and the story would be better to experience if I didn't have to use a shoddy DS3 to occasionally do things to progress the story.

DiverseGamer

@Grenadeh Heavy Rain is a great game. Sorry if it doesn't do it for you.

horizonwriter

@Grenadeh @ziproy @grey_fox1984 Ruined by God of War? Says you. Millions of others would disagree and the sales numbers in the series backs that up big time. Don't blame GoW, or by extension Sony Santa Monica for bringing their vision of what they wanted to get out of QTE's to gaming. Blame other developers for not bringing their own and/or doing it differently.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@ziproy @grey_fox1984 Uh what? RE6? Bro QTEs were ruined by God of War over 10 years ago. And Quantic has been using them since the 90s, at which point they still sucked.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@grey_fox1984 GoW Asscension had a story? I didn't notice and I quit around Chapter 7. Literally nothing happened up until that point except for Hecatonchires and that one bitch.

DiverseGamer
DiverseGamer

@grey_fox1984 Exactly. QTEs are great in these types of games. They practically make up the "interactive drama" category. Resident Evil 6 wasn't supposed to be built around QTEs, and that's why it flopped.

grey_fox1984
grey_fox1984

@ziproy @grey_fox1984 Personally I don't see the QTEs in the QD games as a negative. They are games that are almost entirely built from the ground up around QTEs. They aren't about twitch gameplay, they're about experiencing a story- similar to the Telltale games. Non-gamers should be able to play QD and Telltale games without too much trouble, or frustrating difficulty spikes that would turn them off getting through the story. I'm a gamer who likes a challenge, but I don't walk into a game like Beyond expecting the same experience I get when playing a Halo campaign on Legendary; I just want to experience the story, get connected to the characters and not have to replay segments over and over again until I work out the right strategy.

ziproy
ziproy

@grey_fox1984 Quantic Dream has generic haters since they use alot of QTEs. They've been using them since before RE 6 ruined them, so I don't see how people should hold it against them.
