Assassin's Creed 4 on PS4 gets whopping 2.3GB patch

Huge new PlayStation 4 patch fixes the friends list bug in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

by

The PlayStation 4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has received a whopping new 2.3GB patch.

The huge update focuses on the single-player component of the game, and promises a fix to the longstanding 100 friends limit bug that would prevent users from signing into uPlay if their PlayStation Network friends list went into triple digits.

The patch should automatically download if your PlayStation 4 is being kept in standby mode, and will apply the next time you try and launch the game.

An upcoming title update will also offer various tweaks to the game's multiplayer component, with the update scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on February 11. Ubisoft has detailed the full suite of multiplayer changes on its blog.

Last week Ubisoft confirmed that it has an indefinite plan for the Assassin's Creed series--think Doctor Who--and if previous years are anything to go by, we should soon be hearing about whether we'll be getting Assassin's Creed V or a Black Flag spin-off this holiday season.

The AC4 1.04 PS4 patch notes in full:

  • Fixed rare crashes and freezes
  • Change fight balance to increase double attacks
  • Fixed abstergo challenges count to show 100 percent when completed
  • Add tutorial video streaming support
  • Add support for Resources Pack consumable
  • Fixed news display not always showing correct news
  • Fixed loyalty rewards skins not always being awarded
  • Fixed connection with over 100 friends

The PC version got updated to 1.06 with a 5GB download. Not sure if that was the actual patch size or it was just downloading ancillary stuff for the hell of it.

Wow Sony deliver again. After reading this news I turned on my PS4 and launched AC4 to download the update. The game just started up instantly with no update alert. I thought it was strange so I checked the update history and it claimed AC4 was updated yesterday. The version number confirmed it.

That is truly invisible because I played Tomb Raider on it for 3 hours yesterday and didn't even know it was happening. When I turned on and started playing, the PS4 must have scanned all my apps in the background and contacted all the servers to see if any updates where there. It found AC4 and downloaded 2.3GB without affecting the game in the slightest. Sony's claim is right. The downloads are invisible and happen automatically using a separate processor that does not affect gameplay. I'm very impressed.

Same happened when I bought the thing. I plugged it in and started to explore the interface, tried the browser for a few minutes, then decided to download the day one 300mb update. The PS3 said the update was already downloaded and ready to instal. I was amazed because I expected long waits with everyone attacking the server. I had even downloaded the 300MB update onto a USB from my mac the day before incase the servers where overloaded. I didn't need it at all.

To test the PS4 download speed I downloaded the free Outlast just now and it was coming in at 100mb every 6 seconds. I'm using a Virgin Media 50mb cable connection. I agree not everyone has a fast connection and won't have the same experience but that is not Sony's fault. PS4 is high tech and requires a high tech connection to get the full vision Sony has put in place. Hopefully you guys in the slow lane will eventually get updated by your ISP because the PS4 is a beautiful thing.

By the way, don't be feeling too bad if you have a slow DSL connection. DSL has very low latency compared to cable, even if the download speed is low. So when you're playing pvp COD multiplayer, you're going to have that split second advantage when shooting toe to toe. I'll be the guy trying to shoot you when I already died half a second ago. For that reason, I never play pvp, only U3 coop until Virgin Media lower the latency on their ISP servers.

For those who don't know: download speed is the speed at which the file downloads once it has started, latency is the split second delay before the file starts to download. If your downloading a 100mb file, who cares if it takes a split second before the 6 second download starts. But in multiplayer, the consoles are constantly sending several small chunks of data to each other every second to update everyones activity. All those initial delays add up and you end up half a second behind everyone else. Things have already happened as you approach them from your end.

That may shock some players who did not know. It's brutally unfair and does not reflect skill in any way. Cable or DSL, make your choice depending on where your internet priorities lie.

The file size is getting way too big IMO. The whole point of console gaming for me has always been the advantage of running the game from disk right away without the hassle of installing and downloading big files like on PC. This is the one aspect that I disliked about the PS3 because the patches are fairly big and pretty much every game requires installation. Xbox360, on the other hand, was really awesome regarding this aspect where I just love how you can pop in the disk and play the game right away. Even when there is a patch for a game, the patches are fairly small that require only few minute download on a slow DSL.

Overall I don't like the new direction of the recently released next gen consoles. I feel instant gaming should always be the key thing that separates game console from PC. Also having such a big file is a clear indication to me that they are more into the rush-it-out-now and patch it-later mentality. Before PS3 and X360, there was no way to patch games on consoles so the games have to be rigorously tested before release. Now with hard drive and internet connection, it seems this is becoming an excuse for them to get lazy and not test their game as much before release.

I gotta start playing this again.  I haven't even turned on my PS4 in weeks.  I got it super cheap though, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it or maybe on a good sale on PC.

A great deal of these patch sizes are getting ridiculous ---especially if you delete games when you finish playing them, like I do. That's why I like having disks.  I deliberately buy few digital games, as I don't uninstall games I buy digitally---why waste bandwidth and time. The only reason most of these games are so big this console generation is laziness.  Due to blu-ray and large hard drives developers have gotten wasteful overall. Now that there's more space why optimize it right when they can just rush it out and patch it later. Fewer patches on console software than PC use to be something to look forward to. Big patches are already sending a bad message this console gen and developers as well as Sony and MS need to address the trend and fix it quick or it will start to affect software sales.

Such ridiculous file sizes. Between these huge patches, mandatory game installation and dlc, we'll be lucky to have half a dozen games on the go at any one time.

has anybody had any problems with pixel shimmer? im playing on the xbox one, and every time i move the camera these white flickers in the foliage and trees always pop up. it happens in dead rising 3 also.

I think Ive just figured out why its 2.3gb "add tutorial video streaming support" have you people ever heard of the internet and streaming, clogging up my hard drive with a video that I probably won't even watch and if I do I'll only ever watch once, stick it on Vimeo and give us a link or something FFS !

How 'bout a 60 fps patch or one to unlock the framerate?

holtrocks

I guess consoles no longer have the " plug n play " aspect anymore, I really have no idea why you would put up with this, plus they keep you stuck at only a crappy 5400rpm 500gb HDD.

de-astroturfer

Im sick and tired of these outrageously large patches 2.3gb for what altering a few lines of code, F***ing ridiculous, how do they manage it whats taking up all this extra space is there a completely new OS hiding under there ? Im going to stop buying games from companies with a shit record on file sizes, Ive already done it for smartphones if its above 500mb I don't bother downloading it. obviously the threshold increases for consoles, but 2.3gb for a patch is a piss take !

next gen will all have large updates look at the file size of these games as compared to previous gen. Killzone shadow fall is somewhat 40 GB. in size

Just fucking end the future story. No one will weep over it's loss in upcoming titles. You can still keep the animus if you want and instead imply that future titles are merely another product from "Abstergo Entertainment". The future story is not what people come to the series for. It's the addictive yet calming gameplay of free running (and sailing now) and the ability to waltz around a time period that is practically alien to us today that keeps people coming back. The interesting characters like Altair, Malik, Mario, Ezio, Edward, Blackbeard etc.   are also a plus (which is why I disliked Connor "emotionless" Kenway so much).

You may criticise me for not saying Altair is emotionless too, but I give him a pass because at least he has a story arc. He starts off as an arrogant tool, and by the end he realises his mistakes and apologises. Connor is the same miserable bastard from start to finish. He gets no payoff and learns nothing other than how to build barrels and how to kill people better.

On a note that relates to the article in question, Jesus Christ, this patch is about as large (if not larger) than a lot of early last gen titles.

2.3gb does not seem that bad when compared to the 16gb patch for DR3...I traded in that game before downloading that patch....

Is this really that much to download for console gamers? Maybe I've been a PC gamer too long. Most of my purchases over the last five years have been digital. I download entire games up to 30gb. And yes, we also get these really big updates.

How about fixing the spawn rates of community events? I've been waiting for a White Whale event to spawn for weeks!

Lovely. No need to compress patches either it seems.

ZOD777

The worst patches of all are the ones that force you to download all of the DLC, even if you have the vanilla game.  That really bugs me.  Every time a BF3 expansion came out, another 2GB download ensues.  I wonder if this is one of those types of patches.

@justerthought

That is pretty neat, but I believe Steam has been doing this for years.  It seems to check for game updates every time I start my PC.  It's also been doing the cloud save feature for a long time.

justerthought

@Blankkus

Lush next gen HD graphics are big files, so if you want quality you have got to have large amounts of data. Large amounts of data takes time to load so putting them on a fast hard drive is the only way to go if you want smooth performance when running the game. PC has been fully installing from day on so it benefits from short load times and minimal pop-in. Full instals have been a long time coming to consoles and it is very welcome on PS4 to deliver the immense quality the machine is capable of delivering. PS3 was basically a half instal of just the most requested data. Better than nothing but PS4 is the ultimate.

justerthought
justerthought

@PlatinumPaladin

You better stay with Pacman and Space invaders if you don't want huge files sizes. Huge lust HD open worlds require a huge amounts of data. Where do you think all the detail comes from. Magic smoke and mirrors?

justerthought

@bhop123

Yes I've seen the XB1 pixel shimmer. Same old problem as current gen consoles due to lack of resolution on fine details when viewed from a distance during movment. If you want zero pixel shimmer you need a PS4 running 1080p. Assassin's Creed 4 on PS4 is rock solid. Zero pixel shimmer, extremely high detail and runs smooth as silk.

@Shadowdanc3r

Do you really want screen tear. PS4 is leaving all that crap behind. The devs will have already optimised to the highest frame rate without resorting to screen tear. Always remember, a torn game is a bust game.

@holtrocks you can replace it with an ssd. which is pretty costly though considering the huge installs ps4 games have

No I'm sorry to differ with you but in the 90,s we never had good games,in a mechanic way, they were full of glitch, bug several errors etc.. we just learnt to deal with it, thanks the developers for all the work they do for givin to us the best video game experience

@assertiveuser bigger game with high end graphics tends to have more patches... why is this surprising ? its like upgrading your PC rigs take that stuff out and input new stuff on it... consider those like patches too... big one !

@themc_7  I'll never forget how they had to pull the guy off stage during their presentation at Sony's E3 conference last year. They say a picture speaks a thousand words. I guess a buggy picture doesn't know when to shut up.

@LucentWolf  You need to complete the other contracts before that one shows up ( I too was in the same boat ( HAHA GET IT....BOAT....AC4...ITS FUNNY OKAY) but it's not broken just finish the other ones, also I made an account here just to tell you this so feel appreciative :P

@yourchagrin I had this problem too, the solution is you need to have at least 1 friend on your Uplay account, I never found a single Com event but I added buddy and Boom I found at least 6 events in one day.

@ZOD777 Those Battlefield patches need to have some purpose, since actually fixing something and not breaking a half dozen other things usually isn't it.

@justerthought @PlatinumPaladin  Wow! Assholes everywhere these days.

I buy my games on disc so I can save hard drive space, but the newest generation of games all seem to get completely installed anyway. Not sure that's necessary. And are you telling me you're seriously OK with a 2.3Gb patch?!

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@StHapns247 @de-astroturfer  Im not sure what you mean, the console doesn't have to be always online to watch a online video "once" besides you don't have to necessarily view it on your console.

Shadowdanc3r
Shadowdanc3r

@justerthought When I play BioShock games on a console I opt to unlock the framerate, the screen tears at times but the game runs smoother and the reaction time is better; it's not ideal but I find it better than the not-as-smooth 30 fps and the after images it creates, not to mention the reduced reaction time.  A torn game is not necessarily a bust game.

Thing is AC IV on both X1 and PS4 were supposed to be 60 fps, someone who ranked high on the dev team even said it would be.  Tests done indicate that both versions could easily run smoother than the 30 fps they're locked at.  I suspect Ubi wants to keep it at 30 to give themselves breathing room so they can keep milking the franchise every year and that's not what I want as a consumer.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@GOGOHeadray @de-astroturfer  yes I did say the threshold for consoles increases but if every game has 4 or 5 2.3gb patches that 500gb is going to look awfully small very quickly. no matter how large the hard drive. All the technological advances like cheaper larger storage and faster internet connections are being rendered useless, by blatantly lazy coding, there is no excuse for it !

josh7845
josh7845

@Hellhound30x @josh7845  Criticising something in no way indicates I hate it.

Assassin's Creed 1 was my favourite of the series, While repetitive, it still had excellent writing and was mechanically focused.

Assassin's Creed 2 was mechanically improved, still had decent writing and was an overall improvement on the original.

Brotherhood and Revelations, while they were a bit more of the same, were still enjoyable and addictive regardless.

Assassin's Creed 4 was the absolute pinnacle of the series for me. The core gameplay was changed up in a positive manner and was great fun.

The only games in the series I outright disliked were 3 and the spinoff games.

I just happen to think that the present day story is completely unnecessary. Why can't it just be about visiting various historical periods without having to throw in a bunch of convoluted bullshit? And the fact that they have no plans to end the present day story any time soon makes it even worse. Not only are they stringing us along with a flimsy overarching plot, but they're also implying that they're under the impression that if they do get rid of it, people will stop buying into the franchise, which simply isn't true.

@darth_nyquil @LucentWolf  lol I do get it! :P Thank you bunches! I would have never guessed that. lol I thought it was glitched out, and there's that one fucking fat guard always standing there like a derp. Glad to know I can now finish the Naval Contracts and not get screwed. -.- I didn't wanna finish em all if it was glitched. Thanks again! I am verra appreciative!
