Ashes Cricket 2013 cancelled

"505 Games' main priority right now is to protect the Ashes name and that of the ECB and Cricket Australia," says publisher.

505 Games has announced that it has cancelled Ashes Cricket 2013, days after the title temporarily appeared for sale on Steam.

Offering a public apology to its licensors, the ECB, and the game's customers, the publisher says it "failed to deliver" on the title, and will offer full refunds to anyone that purchased the game.

The visibly buggy game was largely criticised by fans due to its poor quality. 505 Games has also been criticised for failing to communicate the status of the title, after unceremoniously announcing a last-minute delay back in July.

505 Games explained its stance in a public statement:

"As most people who have followed the project closely can affirm, the development of Ashes Cricket 2013 has been fraught with challenges almost from the outset. The chosen developer, even with their many years of cricket game development experience, was unable to overcome the unexpected challenges that the chosen game engine threw up, even with multiple extensions to the development schedule. At the start of the project, 505 Games received all assurances from the developer that the engine was up to the task of creating a dynamic, cutting-edge cricket game for the modern age across multiple platforms, and unfortunately those assurances were found to be misplaced."

“The net result of the challenges we have faced was a game which, despite our best efforts over the course of a 2 year development, couldn’t meet the quality benchmarks of either us, our licensors or our customers. 505 Games’ main priority right now is to protect the Ashes name and that of the ECB and Cricket Australia, and do what we can to recompense the cricket community."

“As the licensee and publisher of name for Ashes Cricket 2013, 505 Games would like to apologise publicly and sincerely to our licensors, the ECB and Cricket Australia, and their respective partners/sponsors, who have been nothing but patient and supportive of us throughout the challenges this project has presented, and who, ultimately, we have let down."

“Our deepest apologies, however, are reserved for the fans of cricket and cricket games worldwide. 505 Games prides itself on being a safe pair of hands on which gamers of all tastes and denominations can rely to put their best foot forward to create compelling gaming experiences. It is clear that, in this instance, we have fallen way short of our stated aims and failed to deliver. We know that the mitigating factors, as highlighted above, hold little solace to the hordes of excited cricket fans worldwide who had hoped this year to be able to play out their fantasy of playing in the Ashes series."

“The people who purchased the game will be contacted very shortly with details of a full refund."

Perhaps this situation should be directed to EA Sports as a warning shot across their bow.

OMG! How can you make a game this bug ridden and bad? What did they spend the $$$$'s on?

They make all games like fifa . Wwe . Nfl e.t.c but they lack this programming.. cmmon they dont even know the cricket. I think indian studios should bold step and make the game of true cricket...

Oh wow they cancelled it? Just saw the Quick Look on Giant Bomb (featuring Gamespot's Danny O'Dwyer) and almost fell asleep because this game looks like the definition of boredom...

Maybe it's for the best.

Apart from Ashes Cricket 2009 (which was hardly acceptable, to say the least), all cricket games seem to get launched without proper testing...and in case of Cricket World Cup 1999 (the most pathetic of all cricket games IMO)...NO testing at all... This is frustrating, considering what year this is. I mean in 1995/1996 even in early 2000s, buggy/stupid cricket games would have been acceptable. But in 2013 still we see the same lack of development skills for cricket games is really annoying.

Granted, not many countries are there where cricket is popular...but it's not like cricket games are sold only in those countries.

Didn't they even test this game once? They had to release it and then realize it was that horrible.Very sad, was expecting this game for sometime.

It must be pretty bad for them to pull the game completely. Probably unsalvageable. A bit of a disaster given the interest in the Ashes at the moment with the back 2 back series.

I still like playing the old Brian Lara cricket game, as long as I can resist the urge to use the lobbed ball money play.

They should make this a regular feature- guys take it in turns to explain their country's sports through the medium of video games.

And here I thought they were referring to a game about crickets, which has potential to be better than a game about cricket.

this isn't any different than Rome 2. That game should have been pulled as incomplete and the developers should have apologized w full refunds. Completely unplayable. You want to see weird AI movements, youtube that game or check out Angry Joe's review...

This is terribly pathetic, Brain Laras cricket a game from 1996 is far superior in comparison. What on earth were they thinking even putting it up for sale.

I don't think 505 Games has a future     for next gen    just maybe they should work for Nintendo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I cant see how a cricket game could be that difficult to make. Unless the game engine they refer to was a terrible choice to start off with. Did they use Scumm engine or something :P

I'll give credit where it's due. It was an eloquent apology. Mind you, I don't even like cricket. I'm here because the quote accompanying the headline was confusing.

"able to play out their fantasy of playing in the Ashes series" Some people's fantasy is playing cricket in the Ashes series? You learn new stuff every day.

"the chosen game engine threw up" From what I've seen of the game, "threw up" is really a fitting word in the sense of puking.

I also like the mixed analogies here: "being a safe pair of hands on which gamers of all tastes and denominations can rely to put their best foot forward". A safe pair of hands and best foot? Apparently the devs and 505 games put their best foot in their mouths with this one.
