As Battlefield 4 issues persist, DICE deploys new "high-performance" servers to fix "rubber-banding"

DICE says it has invested in new hardware to resolve the "rubber banding" issues that some players have experienced.

by

Battlefield 4 developer DICE has deployed new "high-performance" servers to help combat the "rubber banding" issues that some players have experienced. The new servers are already showing signs of improvement, DICE VP & GM Karl Magnus Troedsson said today in a blog post.

"We have invested in new hardware to resolve this issue and deployed new higher-performance servers this week," he said. "In preparation, we conducted a significant amount of testing before installing the new servers to ensure they would correct the issue. We are already seeing performance improvement with 64-player matches and expect this to continue."

The "rubber banding" issues first appeared following the recent release of Battlefield 4's Naval Strike DLC last month. Magnus Troedsson said the root cause of the issue was a configuration of certain hardware types dedicated to 64-player matches. He went on to say that he wished DICE could have released the new servers sooner, but at the same time didn't want to rush it.

"While the process took longer than we would've liked, we wanted to be 100 percent sure it was done right and that the long-term solution was properly in place," he said. "Our objective is to deliver the best player experience possible. We feel this solution helps us deliver that to you. Stay tuned to our official channels for more information."

"Rubber-banding," also known as warping, is an issue where players appear to move in one direction and then are instantly transported back to a space where they were moments before. It's a particularly pressing issue for multiplayer shooters.

Yeah I traded it in.  I kept rubber banding every time I played last week.  Once I here that evertying is all good I may or may not pick it back up.

i take my last comment back for now lol.working great which is a first for me since the day it launched

rubber banding is not the main issue, i hardly ever get that. The issue is shotting people and they loose no health then they jill you with 1 bullet whilst facing the oposite direction and shooting the ground.

Ummm if you guys at DICE wanted to be 100% sure it was done right, you should've told EA that you need more time for debugging & polishing.

So when will they just simply stop trying to fix battlefield 4 and just release Battlefield 5 in 2015? :D

That announcement is surely expecting to be said at this years E3 yes?

What they are ignoring is that the majority of people having this issue are PC players - the rightful audience for the game, and probably the minority. And, most BF servers are third party. No one actually plays on official EA servers. I've never even seen one, not since BF1942. The issue isnt with the servers it's the game.

I can't attest to console but allegedly the game is ok on console.

As someone who has had nothing problems since launch and things seem to get worse they fix stuff. I'm personally done with the BF Franchise... which is sad for me to say as I've always Preferred this series over all others. I have a system that is well above system requirements for every game on the planet yet I can't play this game due to constant rubber banding and disconnects.

I may pick up a copy of the next Bad Company should they choose to ever release one but at this point Dice isn't getting anymore of my money

lol well that's good I guess but Dice lost a lot of Fans on this game.. So lets hope BF5 or Battlefield badcompany 3 ( which I prefer) to come out soon.

I've been playing BF4 on Xbox One since launch and have not expirenced this once. I am glad they are upgrading their hardware though. All in all I only see this as a benifit to the BF4 community!

Am I the only one not running into an issues anymore?

I've been playing this for at least a month with no problems..

I played on ps4 with an average internet connection but no problems..

When the game launched was a different story..

I think anyone who's played any previous BF/EA games, knows when little articles like this come out, 6 MONTHS LATER, it's mostly a bunch of lies. Rubberbanding has persisted ever since RELEASE. Naval Strike actually made it worse.

No on is falling for your bullshit anymore EA.

they lost me at release. got refund and never coming back to bf4. shame the mentality of company's now *cough* EA *cough*. just think they can throw out unfinished games and fix them later without consequences.

Congrats on "fixing" an issue that wasn't a big deal. How about fixing the damn game crashing and the far worse netcoding?

I've never had rubberbanding issues.  Just about every other one though.  Sound issues after the second assault patch.  Hit detection issues that persisted since release.  The instant kill issue, not the bug but the packet burst where all the damage you were receiving is sent all at once.  Visual actions not matching what the server is doing, ie you fire a weapon and it shows the action but doesnt register it on the receiving player's side, like tank shots not killing or guys being shot and reacting to being shot but after they kill you only had their health drop tops to 30% after you unloaded 80% of your clip into them.  I stopped playing like midway through the second assault expansion.

I have premium but ive just flat out stopped playing, didnt even try naval assault, outside of what we could unlock prior to its release, which is another glitch in the game.  while i gave Titanfall a lower score than BF4, due to its the way it handles its online gameplay, I still find it more appealing right now and will stay since the action and alot of the gameplay, i will say, harkens back to the COD4 days and feels fun.  I almost want to reinstall COD4 again, if i wasnt bored with it since players now adays only play HC games on only the maps i found boring.  Am I the only one that enjoyed normal TDM on COD4?

I was conned with B3, I won't fall for this again. I will buy this piece of shit when it goes for 5 bucks, meaning soon. :D

No, it's been a problem since the game released and on all maps.

GOGOHeadray

The maps not loading up have been a problem I am experiencing as well. However, I must say as a console based battlefield player this has been the most fun I have had in a fps in quite some time.

Carpetfluff

I only finally started playing it the middle of last week and only once had a bad case of rubber banding in all my conquest game time and that was before these servers kicked in, so it does seem to be getting better overall. I'm glad I waited for a good long while, although it sounds like plenty of people still seem to have issues. I do wonder how many of the comments on here are based on the game recently rather than on what it was like a couple of months ago. I guess server issues are probably regional to some degree too. I can't comment on the dlc levels mind you, as I don't have them.

On the obscenely long list of problems with BF4, frankly, rubberbanding isn't near the top of the list. You'll see it one out of every 15 matches you play at the worst. No, what needs to be fixed is the netcode which is flat out non-functional. What needs to be fixed is the fact that 95% of the guns are completely broken and insanely overpowered: DV-12, AWS, SR-12, SRAW, need I seriously continue? Or the sound glitch that exists to date on map load after 6 months.

Thanatos2k

Remember when EA said this was a COD killer?

Which won't actually fix anything because the game is broken at its core.

At this point they should just stop fixing bf4 and start working on bf5 right away.

wonder if there's a technical reason why Eddie can't fix that typo

BF4 is one of most terrible online game. This is absolutely not a full game and its just a demo. I stopped playing it due to its 1000 problems. Its just incredible with this game full of problems and it keeps growing from worse to worse.

omar_q

I remember back when I played Bad Company 2 there was a shit ton of lag and rubberbanding. Same with BF3. To think these monkeys would learn  from their mistakes.

Gruug

Frankly, I have never had issues with rubberbanding on PC. Is this something more common to console versions? My only "gripe" has been the cone of silence that some of the maps have had when first release. Naval Strike was no exception on that...no sound for about the first 10 seconds of the game. Otherwise, BF4 plays just fine for me.

jonnyyoung
jonnyyoung

@grenadehh Why are you (PC players) the rightful audience for the game?

And no, the game still has issues on console. So ICE have put out a game to the masses that's also broken and not just to the Supremacist minority!

venomviper74

@grenadehh  I saw one EA server on BF4 but it didn't rotate any maps and was the same one over and over. Pretty sure it was just a test server.

josh_b

@grenadehh

I believe it to be something with the game itself as well. It must be something they can't fix without a overhaul of the whole game and are trying hot fixes which aren't doing anything to try and fix it. I went from 2 Gtx 670's running in SLI to 2 GTX 780ti's running in SLI and upgraded my CPU from a i5 2500k overclocked to 3.5ghz to a I7 and still getting weird performance problems. Even with that I can't even power through the random problems ive had.

People have tried telling me it's my connection that's the problem.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3462710463

^^ obviously my net speed is not the problem.

AllForJMJ
AllForJMJ

@grenadehh  The funny thing is that it's like they think the only problem on console is crappy server performance in 64-player matches. It's not. There's crappy server performance on both 360/PS3 and X1/PS4, and there are still a few crashes on 360. Probably some other stuff, too.

DeilGyre
DeilGyre

@grenadehh Yea, this game should have stayed with its "rightful audience" for at least 6 months after it launched...so the Master(bater) Race could beta test it for the nextgen consoles.  Because that's the rightful role of PC gamers anyway - beta testing for us filthy console casuals.

hystavito

@bsford  I don't play it, but I have a friend who plays on PS4 and every time I've asked he says it's fine for him.

@prince__vlad  Honestly wait until about August when they announce BF5. If BF5 was coming out this year it already would have been announced but according to the 20 month cycle you have about another year to wait until the game is affordable.

Someguy1212

@nousername66 No its NEVER been a HUGE issue. Netcoding always was and always will be the biggest issue.

noladem504
noladem504

@nousername66  Naval assault is the first ive had the problem. Now all the other crap plagued me for months after release, but not the rubber banding.

noladem504
noladem504

@Carpetfluff  most of the comments are based on the release...which was absolutely TERRIBLE. But as of the last few months the worst of the issues seem to have been ironed out. I love this game and really wish DICE can get it right at launch. You definitely did right by waiting because it has been a nightmare until recently.

noladem504
noladem504

@grenadehh  Rubber-banding is by far the worst issue facing BF4 now, especially since the naval assault DLC was released. It is pretty ridiculous that the sound bug is still around since but it doesnt effect gameplay and only last for a few seconds at the start of the match.
As far as "overpowered guns"..wtf? Sounds to me like you just need to stick to Halo.

madgame23
madgame23

@Thanatos2k Yup!  though granted COD killed itself years ago.  COD4 and MW2 were the best, BLOPS 2 has an honorable mention.  The rest were straight terrible, mainly its the lag and hit detection that killed the game for me

grenadehh
grenadehh

@Gruug  No. It's a very common problem on PC and if you think you haven't had rubber banding issues, you're wrong.

jayjay444
jayjay444

@Gruug  The no sound for 10 seconds at the start of every match happens on consoles as well dude lol, Iv'e lost count of the amount of times iv'e been shot down in the chopper because i forgot I can't hear the missile lock alarm lmao.

grenadehh
grenadehh

@josh_b @grenadehh  Same, my video card is miles behind yours but I can still run the game without any frame issues and my I7 would like a word with them. I guess I have only myself to blame for letting my clan pressure me in to buying it when I stated outright that I would NOT buy this piece of shit game after the travesty that was BF3. This game makes you actually miss 3.

grenadehh
grenadehh

@noladem504 @grenadehh  No it's not. Look at every comment here. Ask people who play every day for hours likef me. The rubber banding happens infrequently enough to almost forget it exists. There are core problems with the game itself that need fixing before spending money on hardware that might and probably will not fix the problem.

Gruug
Gruug

@grenadehh @Gruug I do know and understand the frustration of rubberbanding. But, I have NEVER had it happen to me in ANY BF4 game. Don't know what to tell you other then my experience.

Carpetfluff
Carpetfluff

@grenadehh @Gruug  I must've been lucky because only in one conquest match ever have I had rubber banding constantly dragging me back. There may have been tiny instances of it elsewhere, but they've not impacted on my gameplay.

I actually went back and started playing 3 again for a few months... and got tired of that and went back to Bad Company 2. Surprisingly the game is still active.
