Apple TV getting games?

Code inside new beta firmware suggests the Cupertino-based company is looking to bring gaming to its video device.

Source: Tech blog Engadget.

What we heard: As evidenced by the thousands of titles available in the App Store, Apple has already found success in gaming. One iOS title, Angry Birds, was even nominated for Game of the Year at last night's Interactive Achievement Awards.

Could games be coming to Apple TV?

Now, according to the tech blog Engadget, Apple may be bringing games to another of its platforms. According to a tech-savvy tipster, there are numerous references to games in the code of the new iOS 4.3 beta 3 firmware. The code contains references to "ATVGames" as well as "ATVThunder," which apparently is an as-yet-unseen controller of some sort. The code also reportedly contains references to Apple TV leaderboards, a storefront, and "game scheduling"--perhaps a reference to multiplayer.

Engadget goes on to theorize that because of Apple TV's low storage capacity--just 8GB--Apple might be planning some kind of game-streaming service a la OnLive. However, it has no evidence in the code to back it up.

The official story: Apple had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Rumors about Apple getting into console gaming have come and gone, but if the code is as convincing as Engadget says, then it is looking not bogus…that Apple has inserted some kind of Apple TV gaming code, anyway. What form gaming might take on Apple TV, however, remains to be seen.

If this rumor is true, then I think it is safe to assume that this system will support region locking and other ridiculous forms of control.

Personally not interested in playing Ipad/Ipod games on my tv, but I know others are. Why they don't just get a CONSOLE OR PC, I have no idea.....

This would be cool. Playing games on TV like Real Racing or other games with an ipod touch or an ipad as a controller. Would like to see how it will go.

Haha, so many apple haters on gamespot. Guys apple TV is actually pretty popular considering the short time it has been around. I think the "mysterious controller" they reference is actually an itouch, iPhone or iPad that communicates via Bluetooth.

may be the same type of lame games that come preinstalled on our computers or I can play on my DirecTV nobody's really interested

I thought they stopped making them. All I hear these days is Google TV.

How can it be Apple TV when it has games on it too? It's not Apple TV at that point, it's something else.

@baystatethrashr Yea I mainly meant for gamers, afterall they're trying to shift it to a gaming console. Though don't the new internet TVs they're coming out with do the same thing? Makes this device kind of obsolete.

baystatethrashr

@Decon87 why should someone who only cares about streaming media to their tv buy a $200+ console and potentially pay for xbox live and everything else when they could buy apple tv for $99? You make a good point for gamers but for people who have no interest in games they have no reason to buy a console to stream netflix.

We're probably looking at a future greater convergence, where the distinction between mobile and console games is blurred or even erased. The goal is to have the same games accessible from multiple devices. Play the same games on your TV as on your laptop as on your tablet as one your phone. Apple can leverage their success in the mobile arena to get their foot into the living with that strategy. A more dedicated home entertainment device would probably fail to gain traction in what's already a crowded marketplace. Apple and Google TV are struggling enough as it is without inviting even more direct comparisons to game consoles.

If they want to succesfully make a console, they aren't gonna do it by sticking a game streaming service in an already unpopular TV unit. They have to build one from the ground up. Hardly anyone has heard of Apple TV, I have because I'm always on tech forums, but I'm still lost as to what it actually does. EDIT: just looked the thing up online, apparently it does the same crap that any other game console can do as secondary features, except they're its primary features? No wonder it doesn't sell well, I'm pretty sure just about everyone would rather just own a console.

Oh who really cares? Have your mini games... I suppose when electrolux starts making games for fridges and ovens for you to play while you wait for your food to cook, we can start reviewing them and comparing them to freaking Mario.

Wow didn't even know Apple had a TV service, shows what a fail their marketing is on that front

Man if apple got into the console race I really wouldn't care because as it stands the mac is one of the worst platforms to play games on and the Iphone isn't all that much better so I don't see this being very good.

Angry Birds is the Glee of mobile gaming- it seems to be super popular and I've even given it a chance, but I just don't understand the appeal. Rag Doll Launcher 2 blows it out of the water.

If apple were to take on "On Live" with it's own version of "Apple On-live" Then they could easily win in that format. Since they have found great success with the ipad and the iphone. Which are not dedicated videogame machines. But if they "pulled an On Live" Since apple has a loyal fanbase it would work. Even though they failed with the "Apple Pippon" In their first videogame attempt. Apple could call their gaming service "iGame"

boarwar Posted Feb 11, 2011 4:54 pm PT finally, plants vs zombies on a 42 inch plasma in the future we will waste time at an exponential rate ********************************************************************** I play that now on my 60in Sony Bravia 1080p LED Edge HDTV. Don't need no stinking Apple TV to do it either. XBLA or PSN is all you need. I don't know why Apple is trying to get into gaming market. 3 game consoles and 2 handhelds is enough. Other games like Tiger Games and Mattel have already tried it several times and failed miserably. Apple needs to stick with their Mac and Iphones.

anyone remember the apple pippin? THAT is why apple wasn't in gaming.

I don't think streaming games, probably just downloading like ipod. you know apple love making ipods in differents sizes. I think someday they will convert Macs into a bulky ipod with a wheel (there is even a photoshopped picture of it)

Interesting... I think OnLive should actually adapt itself to serve internet TVs. I'd look into it then.

...? "How would you play them?" is perhaps the obvious question here.

@Dejon09: Problems with your argument: - Digitalized music existed long before Apple. iTunes is a sad excuse of a music player that can only play mp3 files, which, quality wise, only goes up to 320kpbs... if you're lucky. Lossless is much better. - I never said I wanted things too complex. Just not too simple. @dawgrejectx: You obviously don't have an Apple TV. I do and I use it, but a simple harddrive/mediaplayer does the same thing... Except it can play things OTHER than mp4 format.

@boarwar Actually, I have already got it on a 42" - don't you see new PSN releases?

funny by the comments all you gujys arer 100% ignorant towards apple, 1. apple is easy enough for a babies to use, but a master can do anything he wants with a mac that a PC can, 2. Apples PCs are better than Windows PC's wich can not dual boot mac os and Windows(mac can)3. my ipod touch is a cellphone with no contract and the minutes are free or cheap4. your daddy pays for your cheap android phones that cant play the same apps only clone apps.

@NColdhardt LOL, I really cant believe you said that. You want items that are overly complicated and confusing? You have some insecurity issues obviously, but anyway honestly if apple made a system it would probably put everyone else to shame, I mean seriously the Ipad will single handly cause the death of PCs. The tablet is revolutionary, and digitized music, I mean seriously Apple is an amazing corporation.

An Apple console would look really cool and have 600mhz processor.

Apple products can be operated by little babies and dogs (seriously, just google iPad and baby or iPad and dog). They're oversimplified and yet people still buy it. I'd hate to watch a console from Apple. It'll probably end up having ONE button to press. Let me just leave you with this: Apple products are simple. Simple to the extent babies can use it. What is Apple trying to say about its consumers?
