Apple sold a record 51 million iPhones last quarter

Company also sold a record 26 million iPads during holiday quarter; overall, Apple posts revenue of $57.6 billion and a profit of $13.1 billion.

Apple sold a record number of iPhones and iPads during the holiday quarter, the company announced today. During the three months ended December 28, Apple sold 51 million iPhones (compared to 47.8 million last year) and 26 million iPads (up from 22.9 million last year).

The company's computer business was also a bright spot, as Apple sold 4.8 million Macs during the quarter, compared to 4.1 million a year ago.

Overall, Apple posted record quarterly revenue of $57.6 billion, up from $54.5 billion last year, and a net profit for the quarter of $13.1 billion, the same figure as last year. International sales made up 63 percent of Apple's quarterly revenue.

Looking ahead, Apple said it expects to pull in between $42 billion and $44 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2014 second quarter.

Earlier today, documents provided by Edward Snowden revealed that American and British agents might be spying on you through apps like Angry Birds, which rose to popularity thanks in part to iOS devices like iPhones and iPads.

Many companies will report earnings in the days and weeks ahead. All eyes will be on Nintendo when the beleaguered company announces results on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Electronic Arts will report earnings tomorrow and Take-Two will disclose its financial performance next week.

Not so long ago people paid gazillions for filthy church absoultions. Today they believe that the iphone is worth the price

Honestly people. Of course most tech-savy guys on gaming sites are going to sway more towards android and hate iPhone. But what you have to understand is we techy, nerdy guys only make up a fraction of the total smartphone market. 9 out of 10 people on the street would have no clue what "rooting" or "home brewed ROM" means. And Android's fractured OS with individual manufacturer's custom versions of the software only further confuse the average customer.

Most average customers just want a phone that is solidly built, runs smoothly, has a lot of options in terms of cases and other accessories, lots of apps and games and is easy to understand and use without too huge of a screen.

Apple knows this, so even though it may not be the fastest phone or have the largest, sharpest display or be the most versatile, it still satisfies most of the collective desires of the average user better than any other smartphone out there.

Also and this is an important thing to note as well - A LOT of android sales are lower-end, cheaper phones (not Samsung, HTC or Sony) on smaller carriers to poorer demographics - thus the reason for the existence of the iPhone 5c.

Its funny how Apple never release figures by region and only reveal the overall figure, the reason is simple its because regional figures would reveal a decline in markets such as Europe and the US and that the growth is all coming from emerging markets, where they would expect to increase sales as the people there become more affluent and the market in general grows. All of which which would show the mind share for Apple products is in general shrinking.

I've never owned an Apple product and I probably never will.

I can't believe people spend that much money on that shit. By the time you are finished it is like £1000 just for the phone and contracts. Fucking ridiculous. Just to watch videos and browse the web on the titchy screen. Oh yeah and play those awesome app games. Yeah right.

I could get both Xbox One and PS4 and a game for each for that sort of cash. Probably have a longer life cycle as well. It won't be long before Apple are churning out a "new" one.

I'm still waiting to see what Apple do without Steve Jobs. He was their rock, without him, the iPhone (which every one said was shit) and the iPad (which everyone also said was shit) wouldn't have gone anywhere. He was the one that went up on stage and forced the thing down everyone's throats with his endless charisma. They haven't brought anything new out since he died. I think losing him was the start of a downward spiral to their death as well. Once people get sick of iPhones and something new comes out that will be it.

no need to blame only Microsoft..

People unfortunately buy iPhones and iPads because they are easily manipulated by marketing strategies, not because they are quality products.

Love how retarded people can get. Of course apple will crush others. And love the people calling apple fanboys stupid.

Android ? Yeah shitty open source lovers.

Open source will never beat the closed systems.

How many phones getting Android's latest updates ? YOu have to change your fucking phone every 6 months and still it wont run latest apps & games. Love how retarded and hypocrate people get about this.

Yeah change every 5-6 months the phone to keep up with the updates. How about apple ? Yeah you can just use all updates on all phones. Thats a downer for retards ...

And im using a windows phone. fuck apple or android , i dont care but stop talking retarded bullshit comments and try not to ignore truth.

Hmm, I bought one, I don't care for specs.

I have a phone in my hand..it's fast, games are cool.

And it's a lot more simple than the other phones.

Some people just don't care about specs because they have the money to spend.

And people doesn't see a greedy phone company, they just see a phone in their hand.

They have better things to worry about.

I think the carriers are being force fed apple product. Apple's got some screwed business men at the helm. All of that's irrelevant once the old stock starts piling up.

Funny. Everyone I know with an iPhone has problems with it.

Love my Galaxy S3.

I don't understand the love for Apple, I really don't. My first foray into it was an ipad4, it's a neat toy, but nothing else. It's an overpriced net book, the picture is pretty yes, but I've tried gaming with and it's just awful. Tried using it for school huge mistake. First and last apple product ever. Instead of joining the lemmings next time I'll stand to the side and watch them hurtle over the cliff.

I wonder if 51 million people have experienced a problem streaming movies purchased from iTunes. Whenever I am done streaming a movie, the storage in my iPhone 4S fills up. I have the same problem with my iPad 2.

I traded my iphone with an android when my contract ran out. The main reason i like android is because i can "drag and drop" files on the memory card. MP3's , videos, pictures are easy to add and remove. I hated to have to go to itunes to do all that on the the iphone.

@psuedospike  totally agree !

also don't forget ignorance that are competitive products out there, not to mention services which are cheaper or even free as opposed to certain charges with Apple.

@nyzma23  Its a credit rating*

Sony doesn't have the luxury of resting on the laurels of Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, both of whom created pretty much the only financially profitable products at their respective companies.

But seeing as its assets are worth more than MS's and how their Sony Pictures and Sony Music divisions are still going pretty strong along with increased mobile sales and the obvious lead the PS4 has, I wouldn't think they're the ones shaking in their boots right now.

@arqeBuddy, you say that people might buy a new Android phone every 6 months and it won't run the latest apps and games (which is completely not true). And yet you have a Windows Phone. Which has like 10% the amount of apps Android has, with months of delay.

There, there. I understand your frustration. It's going to get better, you'll see, someone will give you an Android phone someday, and the sun will return. It's alright bby, everything is going to be fine.

@arqe  What are you talking about?

I was playing Temple Run 2 on my HTC Inspire 4G on Ice Cream Sandwich from 2011.

"Yeah you can just use all updates on all phones." Good luck installing iOS 7 on a 3GS

"im using a windows phone" You basically just refuted your entire argument with that statement.

xophaser

@gargungulunkthat is actually a lot of profit.  The overhead, marketing, and R&D are probably already taken out and counted before the 13b comes out.  Most companies would only dream of the profit margin apple makes.

psuedospike

@Gelugon_baat It's just that Apple products are over-priced and under perform compared to their major competitors.  Apple is basically the Fisherprice of computers and technology products, anyone who bothers to research before buying would knows this and tries to warn less savvy consumers.

Fads are short lived; this is not a fad. People not liking many things about Apple is nothing new. Most of the complaints have been around since the mid 90s and generally I agree with many of them.

They will make a bigger phone, count on it.

Too many people are putting pressure on Apple, and they're feeling it.

lostn
lostn

@Celsius765 Not going to happen. Apple says 5" (i presume you meant inches not feet otherwise that is one giant display you're carrying around) is too big for a phone. It took the death of Steve Jobs just for them to make a 4" phone, and he's probably turning in his grave right now.

Furwings

@psuedospike @Evdne971 Inferior product? How so? iPhone 5S is all glass and aluminum construction - no cheap plastic crap like 90% of android phones out there. Only reason there even is a 5C is to try to get some of the cheap, or less fortunate people out there who ONLY go with android because they're cheaper and easier to pirate free games/music on to take a closer look at the iPhone.

Evdne971
Evdne971

It's pretty damn fast when I compared any other smart phone.

Definitely doesn't under perform, and is definitely a solid and well made phone.

And I'm not even an apple fan

Gelugon_baat
Gelugon_baat

@Alyzen

It's still a fad in my eyes, no matter how long it is.

With that said, I am aware of the complaints - some people think it's very cool to remind everyone else whenever the opportunity arises though.

Furwings
Furwings

@psuedospike @Furwings @Evdne971 Sure I'll drop my iPhone 5 from chest height in it's LifeProof case and it'll be just fine - see most iPhone users have a case since 99% of case manufacturers build cases for iPhone unlike android where you're lucky if you can pick between more than 2 or 3 cases. And if you run a giant Note you may have less choice if you don't want to make your already overly-large phone comically gigantic with an OtterBox Defender or something similar.

Also, this "free app" mentality is largely false. ALL of my most important apps I use on a daily basis on my iPhone are free. I think you really mean "piracy" as in free apps, games and songs obtained through less than legal means.

psuedospike
psuedospike

@Furwings @Evdne971 Inferior, yes.  Glass is good for a phone!?  Hahahaha.  Why don't you take both phones outside in the street and "accidentally" drop both at chest height (which happens to ppl all the time) and see which one is better constructed.  Your iPhone will shatter and become a useless piece of sharp glass, the droid will likely be fine.  Then enjoy paying another $200 for a replacement screen because Apple doesn't cover accidental damage by default.  Soooo, cheaper, better constructed and more free apps, but you still cling to your iPhone as if it were magic or something.  Time to take a long hard look in the mirror my friend or maybe take some very reflective selfies.  lol

psuedospike
psuedospike

@Evdne971 I'm not going to post all the research for you but when compared to say the Galaxy (tho I prefer the note) the iPhone fails on all fronts, design (still easily breakable glass compared to gorilla glass used on Samsung Galaxy phones since the beginning), screen resolution, camera resolution and clarity, etc.  Overall the speed of the phones themselves may be negligible, but you have much less homebrew and free customization options.  Then there's the price...I mean if you are OK with paying more money for an inferior product just because you like the look of it, by all means feel free to ignore all the tech specs and go for the Apple!  Don't even get me started on the disaster that is iTunes...
