Apple's October 22 event confirmed

New iPads and Macs expected at San Francisco event next week.

Apple today sent out invitations for a news event to take place on October 22, confirming a previous report from AllThingsD that the presentation would take place on this date.

GameSpot sister site CNET notes that the event is expected to bring news of new iPads and Macs.

The invitation says, "We still have a lot to cover," with leaves of various colors emerging from the Apple logo.

The event is scheduled to take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, California beginning at 10 a.m. PDT. It is not clear if a live-stream will be offered.

Apple's most recent news event was held last month, when the company announced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Chair Entertainment also announced Infinity Blade III during the event.

The fifth generation iPad is rumored to boast a thinner and lighter design, as well as an improved camera, according to the AllThingsD report. It will also reportedly run Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip.

A second generation iPad mini--featuring a retina display and the A7 chip--will also be announced at the event, the report claims.

It has been rumored that Apple's new iPads will feature the Touch ID fingerprint scanner that was first seen in the iPhone 5s, though these reports have been unsubstantiated so far.

The fourth generation iPad and iPad mini went on sale in November 2012.

I've got an ipad 3 and I love it.  People complain about this crap CONSTANTLY since "mobile devices" and tablets have become popular, but that thing is immensely useful.  It does plenty of great things and plays tons of great games too.  Sure it's weird feeling at first compared to a laptop or desktop because it's so different, but I got mine as a graduation gift last year and I use it all the time.  Still prefer the power and performance of my laptop, but the ipad has certainly proved its usefulness over the past almost year and a half.

Holy crap, I came into this article expecting to see tons of 'Why is Apple being reported about on a GAMING NEWS site?!' comments, as I usually do, but that is not the case. Good job, GameSpot community, you've finally come to understand that Apple's products are technically gaming devices just as much as they are anything else. Now you can go complain about more inane things to feed your own selfish ego.

I've never seen anybody do anything useful with an ipad besides show it off. I can't use it for work not compatible with anything. I can't use it for school again not compatible with anything. Most of the apps are useless little flash games. All apple fans are mindless sycophants willing to shell out exorbitant amounts of money for inferior tech marketed as a fashion accessory without any concern for the slave labor that constructs their devices. I don't care that apple chose Oct 22nd I will still be picking up my Surface 2.

Why are one and two day-old news posts so prominent on the front page?

I used to be the biggest Apple fanboy...until now.  iOS 7's icons are too overly-satured and bright, and the design itself lacks the same level of refinement and professionalism present in their previous software. And now users can't even downgrade back to iOS 6.1.3?  What a joke!  After less than 2 years of owning a late 2011 Macbook Pro, the damned thing has slowed down considerably to the point where opening simple applications takes at least several seconds, and the battery life is atrocious.  Not to mention the fact that the metal surrounding the DVD/CD slot bent down so I won't be using that anytime soon.  The bottom line is that Apple's philosophy always concerns what they think is best for the consumer as opposed to what the consumer actually wants.

Apple... so many reasons to hate this company.  Supposed proprietary hardware that is just re branded intel and charge 3X more for it because of their shit ass logo.  Its their way or the highway when it comes to use of anything of theirs, they control most of your information... For as much crap Microsoft takes sometimes Apple is by far worse.  I don't understand the love obsession people have with them... you can buy so much more with the money it costs to buy their products.

People please know the difference between revolutionising and popularising. Apple seems to get a lot of credit for coming up with Tablet computing and Smart Phones when both products existed years before Apple entered the market place.

If a new iPad comes out the day of the Xbone launch, I'm seriously going to rofl.

Let me guess. It will be in gold and silver and be 0.1mm thinner and have a camera with 1 more megapixel.

Oh! and one more thing.

It will cost $500 and the new iOS will render your old iPad super slow by design forcing you to upgrade for "all these new features".

Still cant see what im writing, it is as if the text color is the same as the background. Im on ipad 3. Wtf is going on. Gamespot, can you do something about this? (Once it is posted i can see it.)

It'll be funny if people hold back on buying a Surface 2 to see what Apple's got in store. This ending up to ultimately hurt Microsoft in the long run. I hope Surface 2 succeed though as it's a pretty awesome improvement over the last iteration with much more powerful specs and 8.1RT.

So, basically, it's going to be more of the same with nothing particularly new or exciting. ::yawn:: Apple is starting to sound decidedly like Microsoft.

I'm satisfied with my iPad 4 atm. Maybe I'll upgrade in a couple of years, since all my savings will go toward the next gen consoles and games until then.

@numarpompillious A tablet is a tablet.. to say that it's 'completely useless' shows that you're a biased fanboy who will bash Apple anytime he's given the opportunity.
I don't like Apple either, but at least TRY to be objective about things.

@Mr_BillGates You don't know the industry well.   the iPads added a new market, and are not killing the existing 'hardcore' gaming market.  It is actually making it grow.

@NBAmaster33  If the aesthetics are your sole reason for forsaking your fanboyism, you are more of an apple fanboy than you know. Aesthetics are literally one of the least important things behind actual functionality. W8 for example, the GUI blows, but the system itself is solid.

There are plenty of real reasons to hate Apple. Perhaps, for example, the fact that they package "proprietary" hardware that is literally nothing special and nothing that you couldn't normally buy for a laptop, slap their pretty chassis on top of it, and charge 3x the MSRP. Or the fact that they use Unix, which is open source, but have it locked down. Or maybe the fact that they have charged, on a year over year basis, the same amount or more for marginal upgrades to their crappy electronics with no regard to the fact that they're ripping people off.

Grenadeh

@Chrypt22 Because they're not microsoft and their guy had cancer, while MS's guy donated to cancer research. Not to speak ill of the dead but Steve Jobs was no more a visionary than Bill Gates, and the cult of apple...oh lord. Apple is utterly despicable at every level - firing Steve Jobs, then begging him to save their company, selling people the same cult shitty electronics every year for the same price with no additional features or advantages, sueing every company under the sun for alleged copyright infringement that Apple themselves has frequently committed.

Oh boy, Apple.

Smart and true indeed. The first tablet I saw was way back in 1996 it wasnt that popular and was very limited but it worked as it was designed to be. First smart phone i used was from HP and that was in 2001 it was touch screen although bulky but it serves it purpose. I could MSN, received email play games and make and receive calls. PDA also came out earlier than smart phones. Was launched by Compaq and HP and other brands.

@fanirama At which point all the makers of your critical applications will have to update their shit to make it compatible with iOS8 (don't worry, we're skipping the entire iOS7 even though its less than 2 months old) but hey Apple still pwns.

@Kjranu Highly doubtful. Surface has raped iPad in terms of quality and value. It hasn't outsold it because logic does not appeal to people...meh

@yearssomuch @numarpompillious Yeah I'm REALLY sick of hearing people say tablets only have total crap for games.  Looks like they've forgotten about Bastion, GTA3, GTA Vice City, Max Payne, Duke Nukem 3D, Dead Trigger 1 (and 2 coming out next week), Minecraft, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Megaman X, Bard's Tale, Beat Hazard Ultra, Crazy Taxi, Deus Ex: The Fall, Galaxy On Fire 2 (and 1), Jet Set Radio, Lego Harry Potter (both games) and Lego Batman, Lili, Lunar Silver Star Story, all 3 Marathon games, Metal Slug 1-4, Modern Combat 3 and 4, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Rage, Order & Chaos (full on MMO), Ravensword Shadowlands, Scribblenauts, Saturday Morning RPG, Rayman Jungle Run, Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2, CD, 4 Ep1, and 4 Ep2, Slender Rising, Shadowgun, Street Fighter X Tekken, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Across Age, FRICKIN BALDUR'S GATE, Final Fantasy Tactics, Machinarium, Real Racing 1-3, Plants Vs Zombies 1 and 2, Myst, Sim City, and Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic.  And those are just some ipad games I personally own.  That doesn't include the countless other action, adventure, horror, strategy, RPG, card, board, and sports titles that are also out there for fans of those other genres.

STOP SAYING PHONES AND TABLETS HAVE NO GOOD GAMES!  This list MORE than proves that statement completely false!

@Grenadeh @NBAmaster33

I was simply stating some reasons why I've become frustrated over the last couple years with Apple. The visuals certainly don't affect the functionality of the operating system, but when the UI looks unappealing, it detracts a bit from the experience for me.  And I agree that Apple considerably overprices their products - you can probably find laptops out there that have the same system specifications, if not better, at a much cheaper price. Also, there's a decent chance their geniuses who work in the stores will treat you like a complete moron and act as if you did something wrong as opposed to admitting the hardware is faulty.  Aesthetics aren't the only reason I dislike Apple now, it's just one category that's particularly bothersome recently.

Seymour47

@Merkasaw @shingui5 Depends on your definition of 'gaming platform'. In all honesty, there's no real reason for a site like Gamespot even bothering with iOS games for the most part. The target audience of most iOS games will never visit a game site in their lives.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@so_hai @Merkasaw @shingui5 Much less a gaming platform. Try all you like, the only people who are going to refer to angry birds as "gaming" are analysts - not gamers.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@TheDesertDragon @Seymour47 @Merkasaw @shingui5 No. Those are not core mobile audience games. Those are games that GAMERS who also own tablets or smartphones happen to play. I didn't get my ASUS transformer to play Final Fantasy or Incredipede and shit - I just happen to have gotten those games and also have a tablet.

Learn to understand your evidence before you argue based on it.

TheDesertDragon
TheDesertDragon

@Seymour47 @Merkasaw @shingui5 So people who like Magic: The Gathering, Asphalt (a bit like Burnout), Galaxy on Fire, Infinity Blade, NOVA, Bastion, Soul Calibur and Need For Speed - and of course much more - are not gamers with an interest in gaming news?

Gotya.
