Apple reveals $800 128GB iPad

New fourth-generation model with Retina Display launching February 5; cellular version to be available for $930.

Apple is doubling the storage capacity for its latest iPad line. The company today announced new 128GB versions of the fourth-generation iPad, which will begin at $800 for a Wi-Fi-only model, with a cellular model available for $930. Both new iPads go on sale February 5.

The 128GB iPad line includes all the same features as the existing fourth-generation models, including a 9.7-inch Retina Display, a FaceTime HD camera, and an A6X processor.

They will be sold through Apple's online store, at Apple retail stores, and through select Apple authorized resellers.

iPads were hot commodities during Apple's recent latest quarter, as consumers purchased a record 22.9 million iPads for the three-month period ended December 29.

What has the world gone to? A useless device outside of watching occasional movie, listening to music and browsing the internet costs $800 with 128GB of storage, but people don't want next generation consoles to cost $500-600 that will last 7+ years unlike this appliance. . .

Typical Apple, charging $100 premium for 64GB of storage and omitting the flash card slot.

The best part? iPad 5 will probably launch in 8 months this "new" iPad 4 is obsolete. Time to part with another $800 by September 2013.

DON'T EVEN TOUCH YOUR WALLETS, no matter how much you want to save the environment! Just FOR ONCE let this be the voice of wisdom and reach the cooling embers of your sanity, JUST WAIT A COUPLE OF RELEASE ITERATIONS...! You might just see the light about what works and what DOESN'T, AND regain some dignity.

I have a $250 Nexus 7 32GB, and I cannot imagine ever filling up 128GB when I have a hard time filling up my tablet. Also, for that price, go buy a couple game consoles (or a decent gaming PC) with games that are infinitely better than anything iOS or Android could provide.

Apple nerd herd, you know what you've got to do - Throw away your old, outdated and obsolete iPad immediately and buy this new, "majorly improved" one, because .. Apple.

Without it your life won't ever be complete and your hipster "friends" will frown upon you if you've still got "the old one", buy now, it's just 800 bucks, but start saving money for the iPad 5 which will be released a few months after that for just 1000 bucks and the follow up iPad 5S for 1500, because .. it's white.

Oh these Apple news are so entertaining, keep them coming ...

I really want to have a face-to-face conversation with someone who keeps buying this sh*t and just try to figure out what goes in their mind.

I'll pay $800 for a barely upgraded device if I get to kick an Apple employee in the nuts with the purchase.

I'll hold off on another Apple device for another 5 years when an upgrade is viable or I can get this new one for $20.

i would rather spend the $800, on a round trip flight to apple HQ, and punch someone in the face!!

Hey guys, pretty much everywhere else in the world apart from the US has been charged over $800 for the model BEFORE this one. Right now our 64gb ipad, wi-fi only costs the equivalent of $880. Im scared to hear what the 128gb cell one costs for us.

The only reason Apple constantly shells out new products at such high prices is because people keep buying. Apple isn't just a company. Apple is tied into a modern culture (a real sh*tty culture in my opinion) that doesn't value patience or frugality.

Hahaha.......no, Apple.....just stop it, seriously.  <_<

800-fucking-dollars?? What kinda crazy crack they be smokin'.....y'know Whitney (rest her soul) said that shit was wack. Apparently somebody in Apple's marketing and product depts didn't get such a memo.

Seriously, $800.....I can just picture now all of the other shit I can think to get for that amount of money that would be no doubt infinitely BETTER. Matter of fact, I rather get a damn MS tablet for that kinda money if I wanted to spend that much on tablet (which I won't, btw), at least its specs are FAR more worth spending that kinda money and you're actually running a full OS on it.

And still no memory card slot! Or a USB slot!  I'm just gonna get a Surface, hell for $800 I'll get the Surface pro instead.

@SolidSnakeUS42 Not to mention the fact that you can actually move really anything you want onto a computer (and then a hard drive) from a Nexus 7 (or any android device for that matter), so you can have whatever you need on it (unless you NEED to have 27+ gigs of stuff on a mobile device at a time?).

Also: I fvcking love my N7! :D

@bloody-hell It merely caters to the people who have a lot of media. Nothing about an Apple product says 'you have to buy it'. It's nothing more than fools that get carried away with the logo.

If Apple manufactured each new product for people to buy them simply because it's new, then explain the iPod Classic?

dramaybaz

@aryanbrar Well Apple isn't a hipster thing anymore, many including teenagers want them as a status symbol.

BestJinjo

@Goddammitj Ya and ironically poor people in 3rd world countries save up for 3-4 months to buy Apple's overpriced products to look 'cool' for the status symbol. Here in the US, many of my friends with Master's Degrees who make $1,800-2,500 a week still won't touch Apple's products because they think they are overpriced. Think about that.

@Tixylixx $120 USD for an SSD roughly; 50-100 for 250GB HDD (newegg)

jesuschristmonk

@sun_spirit The fact that there's people out there buying every Apple permutation that hits the market, caters to the stereotype of an "Apple Fanboy."

Yes, the sarcastic insults are not for everyone, but people should know who they're aimed at.

PumpkinBoogie
PumpkinBoogie

@dramaybaz @aryanbrar Ha, you think that's bad?? You know that Samsung commerical where they poke fun at the guy holding a place in line for his parents to get their iPhones? Now THAT'S truly Apple now.....

Seriously, I work in retail and can't count the numerous 'grandparents crowd' now that I'm seeing w/ Apple products. It's no wonder Apple's share have taken a hit lately beyond all of shit they're still selling.

As much as they don't want to admit it, they've sooo falling mainstream now. Literally, (almost) everyone and they mama (and grandmama's too, lol) are on the Apple train.

Nothing's 'chic' about their shit anymore; practically anyone gets one now.

BestJinjo
BestJinjo

@Alkpaz 64GB of Flash card memory upgrade is about $40-45 on Newegg. Apple is charging $100 for a 64GB upgrade from the 64GB model to 128GB, or a more than 100 percent mark-up. Typical Apple.

They also charge $200 to step up from 8GB to 16GB DDR3-1600 on their MacBook Pro laptops and yet 16GB of DDR3 costs just $75-85.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/larissafaw/2013/01/09/is-apples-iphone-no-longer-cool-to-teens/

On the sliding scale of coolness, teens place most adults firmly on the uncool side. It goes without saying that no teen wants to show up dressed identically as the science teacher.

And unfortunately for Apple, this teen logic may also apply to smartphones. They don’t want to same device as their mom, dentist, and coffee barista. They want the latest, greatest phone that speaks to their generation. Samsung’s Galaxy and Microsoft’s Surface have recently introduced new and never-before-seen devices, whereas the first iPhone came out in 2007 (though new models are released each year).

Also working against Apple’s iPhone is the popular parent tradition to give their teens the old model when they upgrade their devices. Samsung and Android devices are less expensive, which makes it more likely that parents are willing to buy a new one for the teens, versus handing them a new iPhone. “There was quite some negative buzz about the iPhone 5 and the lack of a real incremental innovation, except for the screen size and weight, when compared to the 4S. So this has an effect on the originality component of coolness,” says Insites-Consulting’s Joeri Van den Bergh.

Ultimately, in the eyes of today’s youth, massive popularity has watered down Apple’s coolness.
