Apple Q2: 37.4 million iPhones, 19.5 million iPads sold

Technology giant reveals device sales for January-March period; profits hit $9.5 billion on $43.6 billion in revenue.

Apple today reported financial results for its second quarter ended March 30, revealing a net profit of $9.5 billion (down from $11.6 billion) on $43.6 billion (up from $39.2 billion) in revenue.

The company sold 37.4 million iPhones in the quarter, up from 35.1 million last year. Apple also moved 19.5 million iPads during the period, up from 11.8 million year-over-year. Mac sales were "just under" 4 million, compared to an even 4 million last year.

"We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad," said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement. "Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline."

I don't know why analysts are freaking out and Apple's stock is dropping, they're making more money than they need. Personally, I'm excited for these new products they speak about for fall, they're overdue for some innovation

Tons of sales and cash in hand and stocks is dropping for good reason

43.6 billion? goes to show how much they mark up their products to rip off consumers. good company, but way, way over priced compared to what you get in the box. 9.5 billion in profit.

Apple's iOS is definitely antiquated. We've had the same visual UI for five years now. I hope what they show for iPhone 6 delivers software-wise, otherwise I'll be jumping ship to Android

iPhone: The device that can do half of what the competitors do at twice the price...sweet.

What this article should be reporting is that "It [Apple] has lost around 40% of its stock market value since hitting an all-time high in September last year."

This is truly worrying to investors. They're also worried that there has been a lack of "innovation". This is all absent in this article.

At the beginning I was totally against having an iPhone. I thought it was very complicated and I scoffed at the idea of an unremovable battery. I thought apple product owners were people desperate for recognition, thus they buy overpriced flashy phones to show off. But then I got an iPhone 3GS as a present one day, and my thoughts on the matter changed 180 degrees. Now I have an iPhone 4S and I recently bought an iPad. As I said before its an integral part of my life and work, without them I feel naked. I am not upgrading to iPhone 5 though or even 5s I think. It's not that much of a change really. It's like the difference between the old big 60 gb backwards compaitable ps3 and the newer smaller 250 gb model.

With all honesty Mac laptops and pc's are more complicated than normal "windows" pc's. they are only good for using stuff like final cut and animation/movie editing. But apple's tablets and phones are the best, incredibly easy, fast and reliable as hell. They are overpriced off course. But I personally think its worth it. The iPhone and iPad have become such an integral part of my life now. I store everything on them, even bank pins and statements. I have a dell lap, but I only use it for movie/music downloads, nothing else. Other tablets and phones are far worse. In the end it's a question of personal preference. you like chicken, I like fish.

I don't own apple products, just another excuse of being a hipster but then can't be one since everyone has one.

I might be the only one here who still using cellular phone not this oh so awesome iphone and smartphones.

I only want my phone to do the job that it meant to do,making calls and receiving calls not to keep doing wacky noise during the night and loaded with useless apps.

People are so sociable nowadays they ended up ruin their health.

Oh and i'm not a 50 year old low tech head as well i also own PS3 and PS vita.

Why are people still buying these overpriced phones and tablets from Apple?

Meta-Gnostic

All those buyers will find their Apple device obsolete in 2 years when apps and games won't run on it because Apple doesn't support the latest iOS for it. I'd say half will then upgrade and half will resent their purchase.

Many young tech heads will argue and tell friends and family to avoid Apple products - or deride those who own them. But for every fanboy super nerd in the world there are dozens of normal people who don't give a crap about the technical differences between gadgets. They just want products that work, don't over complicate their lives and don't require too much understanding or customisation.

It is for this reason alone ranting and hating on a product in forums or to family and friends will never work. Even PC sites that used to deride Mac products in the 90's are showering them with praise and positive reviews because they get it now. They understand Mac products are perfect for a decent portion of the marketplace. Maybe not their personal choice but you don't review products by hating everything other than the one or two things you've chosen to be your favourites based on your strict criteria.

It's easy to make a profit on hardware that is price WAAAAY too high.

To their credit, the Apple laptops I've used have been more stable than the ones running a Windows OS, but at 2-3x the cost...I can deal with the occasional blue screen or lock-up.

justletmesignup
justletmesignup

@thechuck11 because current stock prices indicate future profit expectations as well. they were hoping for more sales and the trend isn't as positive - i.e. lower stocks. which is ridiculous mind you, they could never sell another iPhone and still have enough money to last a century

korvus

@Barrakas21 Not everyone that has an iPhone bought it. Both me and my wife got ours via our mobile plan which came with a "free" phone (I say "free" because they do force you to say with the provider for a year) and the plan would cost the same whether we chose a 50€ phone or an iPhone, so the choice was pretty obvious...

@so_hai You shouldn't read too much into the fluctuations of Apple's stock. It was given a major superficial boost a couple of years ago because of their announcement of paying dividends for the first time. Many people jumped on the bandwagon because of that and because they were reporting record profits.

Now the price is simply coming down to more realistic levels as there aren't as many people buying the shares on a whim as a result of their growth grinding to a halt.

Share price at 400 or thereabouts sounds about right and almost $10 billion net profit for 3 months work is bloody extraordinary regardless of whether there was growth from a year ago.

If I was a shareholder in Apple I wouldn't worry too much about the long term. When a company is making those levels of profits along with having about $130 billion in the bank, you can rest assured your investment will be safe in the long term.

@tightwad34 I've seen a million people with iPhones, but literally a handful of people with iPads. This makes me believe that the iPad isn't the revolutionary device to the user, and that it's sitting in peoples' bedrooms.

@damo320 That's nice... but what's your honest opinion ? mines is that Apple makes phones and their pc's more complicated than it has to when it comes to transferring files.. which is one of the biggest use of both phones and pc's.

@Yomigaeru Use Ubuntu (LTS) and you'll get no lockups and a lower price than even Windows.

CaptainGamespot
CaptainGamespot

@Korvus85 @Barrakas21 but you do pay for it in those plans. it's a trick to call it free, but you overpay on a monthly plan for a year and you are locked in. in the end, you paid for both iPhones and then some. i almost did that too, but i shopped around. if you have a phone you bought and just want a plan, the monthly is a lot cheaper. it's also cheaper usually to buy the phone outright and get a cheaper monthly. it's the rent to own scheme all over again. and it works because in peoples heads, they think they really got their phone for free.

u1tradt
u1tradt

@so_hai @tightwad34 Well how many people would feel comfortable carrying around and using a 10 inch tablet in public? Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable because I don't like people watching what I'm doing (paranoid) and I don't wanna get robbed!

@tightwad34 @soulless4now If it's not CoD, it's World of Warcraft or in this case Apple products. A huge amount of people spend/waste their money on "crap". It's not that millions of people can't be wrong. They're not me, so of course they can be wrong, but this attitude of being/feeling superior, because you don't buy this or that product is ridiculous. Let people do what they want with their money. I do what I want with my money, which isn't much, since I don't have much money or need/want new stuff.

@navstar29 @Meta-Gnostic It's not difficult to continue to update old hardware with new software when your OS hasn't seen any significant upgrades in years.

Meta-Gnostic
Meta-Gnostic

@navstar29 @Meta-Gnostic Well ya, only because people have data plans connected to it... Apple can't force people with data plans to upgrade as fast as they force Ipod Touch users to.

I haven't encountered issues with file sharing on Macs and PCs as I use both in my line of work. In regards to the mobiles are you referring to file sharing between 2 iPhones or between a iPhone and another brand mobile? I've never wanted to do open a (bluetooth) file sharing setup with an iPhone ---> Samsung or Nokia etc so I haven't run into that. Same with many other non gadget centric people I'd guess. We'd just go the simple route. Are you talking about photos? I'd usually just email or picture message pics I want to sent to other peoples phones :)

@s3as3a @Yomigaeru ye right Ubuntu can be mega stable but can't run my creative suite (Photoshop, illustrator and so on) or my 3d programs (cinema 4d and 3dsmax) and i have all of this on my Win7 descktop AND on my MacBookpro. So with Ubuntu i win on stability (wich is abit unfair because i didn't had any bluescreens or crashes on both machine) and be less productive...

korvus

@CaptainGamespot Most people I know do it, but only me and a couple of my friends subscribed during the promotion time, the company was losing costumers (crappy service) and was trying to get everybody back by offering lower prices than other companies plus the phone...the service was ok enough but after the year was done I moved to a good one. (I didn't use the phone much and 80% of the usage was texting with the wife, so service didn't bother me much)

CaptainGamespot

@Korvus85 @CaptainGamespot @Barrakas21 yes, that is true, it's still a plus. these companies are smart. most of my friends all did the same thing u did.

@CaptainGamespot @Korvus85 @Barrakas21 Oh I know but it was still 100€ less than any other plan that did NOT include a phone, so it's still a plus :) (We got it at a promotion)

@gabe250 If its so easy to see there should be numerous specific examples to pick from. Maybe just a few from that massive pile would indicate to me just how outdated and stale the iOS is?

gabe250
gabe250

@damo320 @gabe250 No need to go into specifics. Everyone knows iOS has become ridiculously stale over the years. It's existed for almost 6 years now & it's still just a glorified app launcher. I don't want to turn this into a Android vs. iOS debate, but it's very easy to see that Android has evolved so much more in less than 5 years than iOS has in its time.

damo320
damo320

@gabe250 What does "Gabe" define as a "significant" upgrade?

Meta-Gnostic
Meta-Gnostic

@damo320 @Meta-Gnostic 3GS came out June 2009, GSM Iphone 4 came out in June 2010, CDMA Iphone 4 came out in Feb 2011, White Iphone 4 April 2011. Iphone 4 is still being sold with data plans, Iphone 4 will probably not be supported by any new iOS updates sometime in the next year or two.

That means for millions of customers their Iphone will be obsolete in a period of 1-3 years. Same thing happened with 3GS.

I bought my Ipod Touch end of 2008, by June of 2010 iOS 4.0 launched, however my Ipod Touch could not utilize many of iOS 4.0 features like multi-tasking or background customization. It wasn't a question of processing power. It was pure corporate bullshit trying to force an upgrade.

By March 2011 my Ipod Touch could not use the latest iOS 4.3. 2 years and 3 months later my Ipod Touch was obsolete and in need of an upgrade.

Get your head out of Apple's ass and wake up.

damo320
damo320

@Meta-Gnostic The 3GS is nearly as old as it gets in iPhone history and it is supported so your point is invalid / untrue. Nobody in any field can be forced to accept an upgrade. Hell you always have to click accept.
