Apple App Store marks 10 billionth download

Online marketplace celebrates milestone; 10 billionth app purchaser receives $10,000 gift card--after hanging up on call from Apple.

Anyone questioning how huge the Apple App Store has become can now lay their doubts to rest. Over the weekend, the tech giant announced that over 10 billion apps had been downloaded from the store by the planet's 160 million-plus iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad owners. The app store currently offers 350,000 apps in 20 categories, including reference, business, news, sports, health, travel, and--increasingly--games.

Apple's App Store has seen over 10 billion downloads.

The 10 billionth download was a free game, Paper Glider, and the woman who downloaded it, Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, was set to receive a $10,000 App Store gift card. However, according to a report on the blog Cult of Mac (via CNET), Davis didn't believe a call from Apple's VP of iTunes Eddy Cue was real. Believing she was receiving a call from a telemarketer, she hung up, only to be told by her two teenage daughters--who downloaded the app--that the call was authentic.

"The girls came down and said it wasn’t a prank," Davis told Cult of Mac. "I had a moment of panic. The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was a genuine call. The girls were getting quite tense. They never would have forgiven me. They would have held it against me for all eternity."

Lucky for Davis, one of Cue's associates called reportedly called back and she received her prize.

You would think will all the money they make from apps they could sell the hardware a bit cheaper i think that would be a win-win situation cheaper ipod touch or ipad = more sell = more apps download i'm one of those who didn't bought a ipod touch because i don't feel like wasting 250$ on a ipod touch i don't really need and they release a new version each year but if it was selling at 100$ or so i would have probably bought 1 a long time ago.

At least it wasn't a farting app, that would be too smelly for Apple

@x-2tha-z believe me, if I really thought game developers shouldn't be paid, I wouldn't spend so many thousands of dollars every year on them.

hyttenhoof

@x-2tha-z no, I think it would be a shame for people to list those two things under the same category. basically, I think it's a shame that someone puts up a recording of a fireplace they probably didn't record themselves, and then sell it at about the same price some devs game is being sold at, one they probably spend hundreds of hours working on.

@hyttenhoof So you're saying the developers of these apps and games shouldn't get paid? If there's no money coming in from the work they're doing, who is going to pay their wages? If you think app creators should work for free and give their products away, why stop there? Perhaps car companies could start giving their cars away. Maybe Sony could stop charging people for the TV's they make. How about restaurants? Should they start giving their food away? Let's not worry about how these companies are going to pay their employees. Imagine it, you stop playing your free app and turn off your free TV. Then you jump in the BMW that you took from the dealership without having to pay and you drive to the restaraunt, using the free gas that you no longer have to pay for of course, you walk into the restaurant, eat your meal, then you leave without having to pay a penny. Is this the world as it should be? Or do you think only app creators shouldn't get paid?

Oh, yeah and dudes, look at the top of the page, gamespot considers iphone/android gaming platforms. I really think it's a no brainer why this was posted. (Hint: you keep playing with your iphone/andriod)

well, now 2 teenage daughters can develop a long lasting bond of bitterness and hate as the war for who's bought what with the card. Thank you Apple ;)

@brendanhunt1, LOL, oh hell yes. I surely would.....matter fact, I bet she probably will! But on the really real, Gamespot, I do have to wonder what exactly was the purpose of reporting this. Cnet doing it I can see, but you guys & gals, not so much so.

This is a interesting article and has very little relevance to videogames in the way that the bajillionth app was some paper glider free game. woohoo i hate to say it but if there isn't anything else going on in the world of videogames more relevant to be brought to everyones attention then changes need to made cause that is pathetic. At least if your going to even speak about this who cares apple crap it could be in a review of the game. Is it even a good app? Who cares if someone hung up on some apple guy? Please dont lose focus on games, GAMESPOT. That is kinda why we come to your site and subscribe to your feeds

Random Comment: How awesome would Guitar Hero:Motley Crue be, they are perfect, the guitar in it would be so fun to play, drums would be insane, singing would be a challenge, and bass, its Nikki Sixx, maniac. Thought i would put something thats actually to do with games on this page.

Great news. That's a lot of apps which I believe some of them are GAMES! (and this is a gaming website after all)

It's terrible, they are selling things that really shouldn't cost anything, I've never seen apps anywhere else cost money. When people find ways to create money off something free, it's sadly often perceived as ingenuity, and it really isn't It isn't ingenuity and it isn't pioneering, it's retarded. And I'm not including music into this, that's something completely different, and purchasing it shouldn't be discouraged as much as it is.

How depressing. And this isn't games news. I resent Gamespot reporting all this crap about Apple suddenly.

What the hell is this? I thought Apple said that anyone who downloads an app is entered into the contest, and ends when the 10 billionth is downloaded. There was even an alternate entry form...

I would have believed it. Simply because I had prior knowledge of the "contest". However if they'd asked for credit card numbers or other sketchy things they'd get hung up on. It's called common sense people.

Well good for her, though with two teenage daughters who I am sure have iPhones, iPods or iPads that $10,000 dollars might not last that long.

I probably would have hung up too. Who would genuinely think someone was going to offer you a $10,000 gift card with all the scams out there nowadays? Not me... Lucky her though. :)
