Apple allowing iPad game subscription service

Casual publisher Big Fish launching all-you-can-play $7 monthly subscription program for streaming library of tablet titles; Android counterpart on the way. UPDATE: Apple has since revoked the apps approval, and removed it from the iTunes store.

by

The iPad already plays host to a handful of nontraditional gaming business models, from inexpensive ad-driven titles to free-to-play offerings that make their money off microtransactions. Apple's popular tablet will soon see another novel way to sell games, as Bloomberg reports that the consumer electronics giant has given approval for a multi-game subscription model.

Big Fish will soon offer iPad games an All-You-Can-iEat gaming solution.

According to the article, Apple is allowing casual game publisher Big Fish Games to give iPad owners access to a catalog of its games for a flat monthly fee. Previously, the company's iPad offerings, like Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove, Garden Panic, and Toppling Towers, had to be purchased individually.

The service will initially cost subscribers $5 a month, but Big Fish Games will ramp that up to $7 a month next year as it pads out the offering of titles. To ensure that only active subscribers will have access to the games, Big Fish will stream the titles to users' iPads from inside its own custom application. Initially, the application will require a Wi-Fi connection for users to access games.

Big Fish's plans for the service aren't limited to Apple's popular tablet. Company founder Paul Thelen told Bloomberg that an Android version of the subscription service will launch in the first quarter of 2012. Additionally, he noted that the application could be modified to work on Internet-connected TVs.

UPDATE: Apple has now removed the Big Fish application. Speaking to Bloomberg again, Thelen said “We were notified that the app was removed... We’re trying to follow up with Apple to try to figure out what happened."

there's another idea they're gonna steal...

Apple will never condone this sort of service unless they release it themselves and charge a premium for it, hell they're still blocking you from doing you know what to their phones and iPod Touches. If and when they do decide to launch their own service after stealing this idea, nobody will buy into it unless they're foolish enough to do so.

Those games sound like they're worth paying 7 bucks a month for, when the average game is 2-3 bucks forEVER... /sarcasm Stupid idea.

I hate apple products. They have the only devices that are not plug in play.

woah, a few trolls below... I've been very ambivolent about Apple lately. I've always felt their products were flashy, nice to look at, but over-priced function wise... and infact, they still are really. But then, when you actually use one of them, they do hook you in. My wife has an iPhone, and whilst it didn't make me get one myself, I kept my Nokia and just bought an iPod 4 for the same screen resolution and games etc, and I just love it... so we then got an iPad 2 and we both can't imagine not having it, it's such a joy to use. The majority of people who bash Apple are just singing the same song of everyone else, and rarely have they used one of their products for any length of time, because for the most part, if you do, you'll get it. There are some who have used them and just don't like them, fine... but most of those people can put a balanced argument together and not just go all WAAAA about how Apple are evil.

@deathstream and you're just one of those people who will troll every article they find to look for people to flame because they don't like apple products. Apple fans are a tad insecure about their products...

I like hidden-object games and just played Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove. It was a pretty good couple hours that it took to complete it. I think it's worth it to pay $7/month to have unlimited access to all their games. They're casual games and pretty fun for what they are. When you play through everything, which shouldn't take more than 3 months, you cancel it. But I think it would be a great service to have available on a tablet. Like I said, they're casual games for that market and priced low at $7 they appeal to casual players or people that wouldn't otherwise play any games to shell out a few bucks and get unlimited games at their disposal. It's not aimed at most people on this site so keep that in mind.

@sulaymanqazi WAIT A SECOND! why the f*** are people playing games on the ipad. have you herd of a 3DS or a PSVita? *********************************************************** Because they are dirt cheap ($1 - $5) and very fun to play. Yes, a lot of it is crap, but there are some quality titles out there and they aren't on the PSVita or 3DS and don't cost $30 - $40 to play. I love my 3DS, DS and PSP. I still play games on them. The IPad, IPod & IPhone are no substitute for a PSVita or 3DS.

@Monopoman @Xander Yeah you just get the 5 finger discount right? That device is rarely if ever sold at a huge discount because they sell them quite fine at full price. Unless your have friends that work at Apple Its like 1 in a million to get them cheaper then retail. Some items are much easier to find cheaper then retail just got a 3DS brand new sealed for $129.99. ************************************************************ I used my AMEX rewards points. lol!! Got a 64GB IPad with Wi-Fi & 3G for like $300. Over 66% saving and that included shipping and taxes. lol!! Like I said, "There are ways." I knew those points would come in handy one day.

XanderZane

@chibi-acer Nice idea, but their games are not worth $7/month. ***************************************************************** Exactly! That's why I said you would really need to have access to app available for it to be even remotely worth the price. $7 a month to have access to about 30-40 games isn't worth it at all. If they charged a one time fee of $7 to access all of it, then maybe people would take a look. Otherwise, no one is going to waste their time on this.

@Joedgabe It wasn't perfectly understandable. He said,"I have an iPad,I think." How do you not know what you have? Also,I wasn't trying to call anyone retarded,or pick on his spelling ability. In fact,I even cleared it up by saying he seemed to have a grasp of it.I was simply saying it seemed like he was trolling, just the way the comment was very scrambled. And don't insult my intelligence. I may have "kid" in my name, but I came up with that name years ago,and I've just kept it. Plus, age is irrelevant to intelligence. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but people say I'm pretty capable, and I've got the paperwork to prove it. But enough negatives. In the end,I'm sorry my comment came off the way it did.I worded my comment rather badly. All I was trying to say was that I thought he was trolling(and we all hate trolls)and accidentally ended up sounding like one myself. So,sorry for the offense, and sorry for letting my inner sociopath take the wheel for a moment there. @Sirbobislost Quite possibly. But by now you've read the above. All clear?

@Wormkid_64 He was just asking for suggestion on a game he could play on the iPad that he only got Angry birds, another game he can't remember and solitaire and those are boring so the only thing he does is read books on it. No offence but even if it wasn't 100% clear it was pretty obvious ._. and the only one with "kid" in the name is you. Don't be a Jerk there's no use in knowing English if you can't interpret other ways that people use it. It's quite possible the person knows another language more complicated that English mind you and even if it wasn't clear what he said was at least understandable. Yeesh.. it's like people can't perceive anything unless it's spelled out right in-front of them. People like you give the rest of us a bad name no wonder our IQ is low nation wide, people are so proud because they can put sentences together what do you want a cookie? you're supposed to!!! ( I gotta love that saying ) don't take it out on people that don't need to.

Hi, I'm new here. I never heard of the game but I have an iPad. I think. That's the machine that they said on 60 minutes helps people on the autism spectrum. I like my machine, although I'm not autistic. It's pretty easy to learn to use, and I can read books on it. Only trouble is, can't take it in the tub with me to read. Does anybody know of a good game for an iPad? - My Beca likes to play with angry birds, but I don't like that game much. There was another one, but I don't remember what it was. And solitaire, but that gets old.

Some people do like Big Fish games. $84/$60 a year is overpriced though. Still, it suits the platform. Overpricing = original Apple style.

I have an IPad 2 and I am using it now to view this site. I Love the IPad but I don't think that this is something that I would pay for.

XanderZane
XanderZane

The IPad is not a laptop. It more like a portable internet with 100's of useful apps. Where as a laptop is bulky and hard to handle in a pinch, the IPad can be pulled out easily and used on the fly. What you're lose? Just turn on the GPS app. You're at a friends house and looking for a recipe for Peking duck. Pull out the IPad. It's more of a tool. It's not going to replace the desktop or laptop and I wouldn't use it to play games like Diablo 3 or The Witcher 2. I wouldn't pay $900, $700 or even $500 for one. I'm getting a IPad 64GB Wifi - 3G for much less. Hehe!! There are ways. If you can get one cheapily, it's worth it. Stay away from the Kindle Fire. It has to many Cons.

SeriousToast

I myself, do not care for Apple's products, but to all of you haters out there, the Ipad is no joke. I used my buddy's once, and it's a very good device for some of these games. and why is it your business how people spend their money?

Wow, the ignorance of people posting here is astounding. Why post here if you have no idea what you are talking about (or what the article is talking about)? Just needed to complain about something? I've never played a Big Fish game, but this is not a bad deal, The company has a huge catalog and they charge $5-7 per game now. The games can take up nearly a GB of space. There are people who await the next Big Fish release as eagerly as you await the next big console game. Your genre of choice doesn't make you better than them. The latest Big Fish game hit last week at $7 and was the top selling and top grossing app for several days. For the target audience, this is a good thing. And the Apple haters need to LTR. It is coming to Android next year.

@Phantasmica No, you'll just waste your life needlessly trolling any article about anything related to Apple. Maybe the reason you don't understand the appeal of the iPad is that you just aren't smart enough. I'm not saying that is the reason, you may just be a naturally hateful person, but perhaps you should consider the possibility...

Phantasmica

i don't get why people get ipads... just cause theres an apple logo on the back of the device? its an overpriced crappy laptop. if im gonna put down that much money, i wanna get my moneys worth. im not paying for an ipad to pay for crappy games. and they're just going to constantly keep upgrading it anyways to where the current version will be crap in such a short amount of time. i wonder how that one person who sold their kidney for an ipad is feeling right now....

crunchb3rry

Waste of money. People probably only buy a few games a year for a few bucks. Spending $7 a month for all that is money better spent elsewhere, like for a good chunk of a Netflix subscription. Or maybe those services that let you read all you want on Nook/Kindle without having to pay the insane prices for an e-book. Most of those cost damn near what the physical book does.

@nurnberg What are some iPad games? Oh wait, they are all crap, that's why nobody knows them. ********************************************************************* I've been playing BattleHeart and Flick Golf which are both great games for just a couple bucks. I've also downloaded AddictiveGames apps that have some decent games as well. Well worth the cheap price for a lot of fun. Not every IPad, IPhone & IPad games are bad. You just have to do some research to weed out the crap.
