APB not coming to Australia?

Reports surface that APB will not be released in Australia due to a lack of local servers; EB and GAME retailers both list the title, preorder available.

Source: News outlet Kotaku Australia.

What we heard: At the end of April, EA announced that Realtime Worlds' upcoming online shooter APB would be released on the PC on June 29 in North America, on July 1 in Europe, and on July 2 in the UK. While no mention of Australia was made, there's now speculation that the title may never make it Down Under.

According to Kotaku Australia, EA has decided not to release APB in Australia because a local server would be necessary to play the game. The article said an EA rep told Kotaku that Realtime Worlds had no plans to host a server for the game Down Under, which effectively means no APB for Aussie gamers.

APB is a massively multiplayer open-world shooter, in which players will take on the role of a criminal mastermind or dedicated law enforcer in a virtual city populated with up to 99 other players. Because the game is driven by an asymmetrical matchmaking system that assigns players to a game based on their skill level without the use of a lobby, there is no doubt that a local server would be needed to eliminate lag and ensure speed and accuracy during gameplay.

You may not be able to do this if you live in Australia.

The official story: EA has not returned comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. APB has not yet been rated by the Classification Board of Australia, and while retailers EB Games and GAME both show listings for the title, there is no release date on either site. Interestingly, you can preorder APB from the GAME Web site.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Alright ea my money will happily go towards 4 months of snowboarding instead, which I will have much more fun out of. You don't release games here don't mean I'm going to buy some other of your games.

It's not like they'd be missing out on anything. From what I've seen of the beta, it's not going to be a very good game.

Read the article, folks. It has nothing to do with censorship or the Australian government!

EA does not want to set up a local server there. Whine about EA, not the Aussie government, kay? Save that for when the new Mortal Kombat gets banned from there :P

Lol!! What's with all the censorship talk?!!

Some of you guys seriously need to read the article. This has nothing to do with censorship or ratings.

Even though I don't play these sorts of games, I'm still annoyed that this can happen. To the others upset by this, don't complain here, email EA instead.

i feel sorry for oz.... their government are great in some ways... very hard line on important subjects (the uk should take note)..... but when it comes to gaming.... let people make their own descisions! Age rating systems work fine when done realistically! I think it's so patronising in these situations. people are just going to get it off ebay or torrent it anyway.... losing the government VAT...... daft. game looks cack anyway..... wouldnt worry too much aussie cousins.

The Australian censorship board needs to realize that violent video games aren't the cause of real life issues already, this is pathetic.

You wont be missing much anyway I thaught the game sucked cheddar apple in beta. The only thing good about APB is the customisation and the ability to make and sell your own music. The rest is pretty weak. Unless its drastically changed I cant see it doing too well anyway, besides I think most MMO players are still too addicted to WoW to move to another MMO. Why does it say on here that APB is also on 360?

While I wasn't planning on getting the game, this is just another sign of disrespect shown from EA to the gaming community. Especially one that has shown the company so much love and revenue. Why not host a server in the country and it will take care of Aus/ NZ and lower south east asia? There's easily thousands of customers there available.

What's next on EA's "Nah, f*ck the Aussies" list? FIFA 11? Dead Space 2?!?!? Although, more realistically, it'll probably be Rock Band 3.

@selbie: yes, but down here in australia, internet speed's are generally behind the rest of the developed world, and along with the isolation and low population density (although to be honest it doesn't seem that low living here), international internet gaming is generally a lagfest for a lot games. Although in many games where low ping is less crucial, it's fine, like WoW for instance. Laggy servers could cripple gamesales, although I never thought it was such a big problem that EA just couldn't be bothered dealing with it properly.

It's not fair! Why is Australia allowed to avoid this steaming pile of crap? What did North Americans do to deserve this stinking turd? Hey, ESRB! Do us all a favor: Prevent APB from reaching store shelves everywhere by rating it NRV (No Redeeming Value).

Ovaskilled

@jasper-ah- err r, what? We have ALL The GTA games here in Aus, the only difference is they are rated MA15+, not R18+. And I could be wrong, but im pretty sure that we have all the Silent Hill game's. Personally though, I am upset about this, I was really looking forward to this game, but I knew over a week ago we werent going to get it when I seen news for pre-ordering it on Steam was available, and after searching for ages on steam I got the message "This content is not available in your region." And also after being on the pre-order list from the APB site and not being told anything about it, I fugured as much... Im just angry at not having Aussie servers, its kinda like WoW, "Sure, we (Blizzard) will give you aussies your own server's... though they will be based in America, that cool with you guys?" I mean, if I wanted to play on a server in america, I would just play on American server's. But this is even worse, cause at least Blizz offered us servers, unlike these guys not even giving us a chance to play -.-

the other thing that should be noted is that if you have friends on american steam they can gift you apb

@eBentl sorry dude, I jumped the gun a little I guess :) This for me was a bit of a breaking point for my rant about how restricted I feel the rating system for you guys is. I just think you guys deserve a little more respect is all. As for for APB not being bothered, to provide servers for you, that is VERY disappointing... I'm sure us UK boys and girls wont like alienating our south seas cousins when it comes to some good old gang warfare :)

selbie

That's a shame. It's a interesting game. I wonder why they wouldn't allow the game to be sold. Couldn't they just let aussie players use the EU/US servers?

eBentl

@jasper-ah- All good and well for somebody not under the thumb to suggest, however those of us who are effected kinda take issue with the whole thing (though as already stated-irrelevant) Also, kinda doubt GTA really causes too much robery:D

eBentl
eBentl

@TheGreyArea Whilst I totally agree about R18+ it's kinda irrelevant here, this is just because Realtime Worlds can't be bothered to host a server down under, probably figure it'd be a gold sink

@ blackhuntingcat Stands for All Points Bulletin :) havent heard much good things at all from those that played the beta. Though it certainly looks/sounds interesting, but not enough the shake up the MMO market anywhere let alone here. Its not like its the 1st MMO that doesnt get a release here there are several Korean ones that dont have servers reaching Oz. But this is an EA published mmo I expect alot more.

TheGreyArea
TheGreyArea

Ouch... I personally think the Australian government needs to back-up, and let it's people enjoy whatever the hell they want to enjoy with their hard-earned money, and spare-time as far as entertainment goes. Stop trying to control the minds and interests of adults who are perfectly capable of making their own decisions and conducting themselves with as sensible behaviour as the rest of us, who are enjoying the full delivery of such games and movies. ADULTS ENJOY ADULT THEMED ENTERTAINMENT..! GET OVER IT AND LET IT BE!
