Another report says PS4 virtual reality headset will be announced next week

Sony's Oculus Rift competitor already in some third-party developers' hands, report says.

Sony's long-rumored virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 will be officially announced next week during the 2014 Game Developers Conference, a new report from Edge said today. This tallies with a past report that also claimed Sony would use the annual show to unveil its competitor to the Oculus Rift.

Some third-party developers are already tinkering with a prototype of Sony's VR headset, the report claims, but it's not clear which studios are currently working with the device. These developers told Edge that Sony's VR device is "far superior" to Oculus Rift's first iteration, though it's likely to be more in-line with the newly unveiled Crystal Cove unit.

These mystery developers added that there isn't much software yet for Sony's VR headset, but Sony is expected to show at least tech demos during GDC next week, they said. Developers speaking with Edge about the device said they were not sure how viable the technology would be as a platform because VR remains a niche market, at least for now.

Sony's announcement of its untitled PS4 VR device is expected to be made during the company's "Driving the future of innovation" session at GDC on March 18. Engineers from Sony's R&D division will give a presentation about the hardware, supported by PlayStation Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

The Oculus Rift headset has made significant noise in the VR space since its hugely successful debut on Kickstarter in 2012. But Sony could, at least in theory, eat away at that popularity with its own device. The PlayStation brand already has millions of dedicated followers, not to mention significant marketing power to bring VR from a niche market to the mainstream.

We'll be in attendance at GDC 2014 bringing you all the news about Sony's new VR device, should it actually be announced.

Of course, Sony already has a line of dedicated head-mounted displays. But this new virtual reality headset is believed to be tailored specifically for gaming purposes. Its announcement would come as little surprise, as PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny said last month that virtual reality could be a major force in the industry over the next decade.

"The impact of virtual reality technologies could be pretty significant going forward in that time frame," Cerny said at the time.

The only thing this will do is help draw crowds to the PS4 booth at electronics stores and gaming conventions, because everybody will want to try the new hot gadget out.  Kind of like when automakers produce a limited edition supercar, it's just sort of saying "see what we can do".  This is a way for Sony to get a lot of news media attention and it will be successful in that regard but as a mass consumer product with high sales?  Not likely.

The HMD with the highest HFOV (and Oculus is pretty much up there with it's approx 90-100 degrees HFov) will be the winner - that, and the pixel pitch of the display.

Also, the head tracker needs to be taken into account - latency needs to be addressed.

The fun really begins, if a camera brings in the real world into the system - I.e, provides digital see-thru- this can be useful for say, watching the keyboard (try reaching out for keys with the OR headset on and you'll know what I mean)

A Digital see-thru VR headset will be the best of both worlds. VR and AR add to this, GPS and then you've got large scale outdoor VR possibilities.

The cheap android/smartphone solution; Durovis Dive, seem interesting if developed further.

Can I wear my PlayStation Gold headset while these are on? My neck is really going to get a work out.

I think the majority of gamers would still rather have a nice TV. With 4K becoming popular and cheaper, a consumer could get far more out of a super TV than a VR headset. Unless the price is pretty low, I do not see people buying a headset specifically for gaming. It's not to say that this would not be really cool, but just kind of impractical.

I don't think games are the draw for VR, at least not for me and millions of other people.  I can have a fun game experience and that will add to my life.  What I really want and need is a Virtual Entertainment room.  Something you might see in a millionaires home, but much more configurable and easily manipulatable.  I am thinking of a virtual room with a "200 TV, a 200" monitor, a Messaging wall, a video chat wall, a live view of the beach in the Bahamas.  In other words, something a millionaire would want, that it would take a million dollars to build, and I want it for $1000.  I want a 360 degree view, I want to resize screens so I can play my favorite game, watch a movie, keep an eye on stocks, watch messages and my favorite 1980's Rush concert at the same time.  I want to control sound inputs, levels, resize screens, configure interruptions from important changes.  You know, things a millionaire would do.  I want to trade stocks, watch 3 different news channels, see my kids play, start a meeting at work, and visit the grand canyon.  I want to be more-than-a-millionaire, not a really great gamer.  Just my two cents.

Virtual reality won't be as good on the PS4 due to the power limitations of the console, especially considering Valve and Oculus are talking about games needing to be rendered in stereo 3D at 95fps (1080p or higher).  Oculus has some of the brightest people in the industry working on their team, and they have a big head start in terms of developing prototypes.  Sony, on the other hand, is a display manufacturer and has the ability to create custom displays, which COULD give it a huge advantage in terms of price and design.

Either way, this is good for VR.  The more competition the better, and now console gamers will have a chance to experience VR in the near future.  Not everyone can afford a $1000+ gaming rig to run the Oculus Rift, so Sony could help really bring VR to the masses.

WHAT A JOKE: PS4 first four months.

1. No Games. Still 4 months later with 8 days to go we still haven't had a REAL PS4 games since launch, and given that both Knack and Killzone were amongst the biggest disappointments in my gamming career I shouldn't even count them.
2. The interface sucks and is worse than the ps3, application errors, crashes, and over heating from using Netflix.
3. I have used my ps4 for Netflix only for three going on four months straight during the worst winter of all time while, XB1 buyers have 5 legitimate good games.
4. The Indie game debacle. Titles like Don't Starve, Basement Crawl, Tower Fall, and soon mercenary kings are complete and utter INSULTS, this is the next generation yet I am playing flip top esque phone games from 2004.. have you seen how bad basement crawl and tower fall are, or how bad mercenary kings is, or how about Astronauts or whatever it's a MOBA, another forced multplayer game that looks like a ps1 games or before the ps1 even existed. I like retro games but throw in something that makes them look good... what an embarrassment these Indie games have been. Where's the review for tower fall IGN I bet it's a 3 like basement crawl.
5 Delayed games Launch games: Drive club 11/15/13-2015 Watch Dogs 11/15/13- May 27 2014 memorial day weekend the unofficial start of summer, The Crew Jan 12-year end 2014 or 2015, the Division March 14- year end or 2015, Infamous Feb 5-march 28th the first day of spring, witcher 3 September 12-Feb 2015, and many more to come.
6. We don't yet have a car game, an adventure game, a good FRS and don't mention PORTS to me, we don't have a horror tile, outlast is a pc Port and all you do is run, we don't have anything but a multi gen stealth game, a touched up port in tomb raider that I already owned and a slew of horrid cheep as they come embarrassments on PSN. They had the nerve to give us Dead Nation, a game I owned since 2010 as last months game, 2010?
7.The avoidance of releasing games on ps4 but ps3 only. This is unprecedented people.. four months after they garner in the next generation console and they have 6 AAA titles come out for the previous console ONLY. GT6 because of Drive Clun selling 1/10th of what GT5 and preventing PS4 owners from having a car game, Castellvania 2, too expensive to bring to ps4? Nascar.. not that I care.. but again EA sighted that it was too expensive to bring to ps4, Dark Souls 2? I mean this is ridiculous. The ps3 gets Dark Souls 2, we get a flip top phone game called tower fall...a disgrace
8. I have had enough and have already gone through one controller and noticed that my PS4 is imbedded with dust and gets really hot just from Netflix which is ALL I use it for, I am worried the cheap console won't even last before games come out. Fine I finally have Infamous and I am Psyched but still another 8 days away, then after than I kid you not the next REAL game is Watch Dogs 2 months and 2 weeks later meaning that come June 1 the PS4 will have just 4 games and a demo.. the next victim will be the retailers they can't survive with this few games, and neither can the developers.

give me a gaming grade display at least on par or better than the rift and the glyph for 500€ and i will buy it instead of upgrading my gaming tv.

As long as sony makes the VR headset also compatible with PC games. And make 2 versions one for consumer (720p) 300 dollar version and one Elite version 500~1000 dollars? (1080p/4k) for more. And if possibly add in the ability to watch 3D movies with it or game in 3D. This would work.

AyatollaofRnR
AyatollaofRnR

Sony might be jumping the gun on this one. VR is not established yet, so expecting people to buy an expensive peripheral for consoles is unrealistic.

If Sony actually manufactures it's own displays, that could give them an advantage over Oculus. If they have demoes at Best Buy and it doesn't make me sick, this'll be the only reason I have two consoles this gen.

I can't wait for this vr fad to die out its getting ridiculous how people think this is gonna stick wether it be this or oculus i don't see why sony is piggy backing on a popular idea They are just now making decent money because of ps4 now they wanna throw Thier money away on this that's just stupid

I'm calling it. The headset will be $250 and would will need the ps camera with it. 1080p high contrast with gaze tracking and built in headphone. Bundled with camera for 300. Called it.

Sony's current VR headsets are $1000+ for them. This new headset for PS4 will probably be closure to Oculus Rift price of $600+. Whatever the case, it'll be too expensive for most gamers wallets.

Slammer612
Slammer612

As I mentioned before I will wait on the Oculus Rift HD just for the simple fact that Sony has a horrible track record on their peripherals attached to a system (Move, The Eye, The 3d tv that displays 2 different screens based on which pair of glasses you wear, 3d TV in general, etc).  I am just not confident in them supporting it with just more then a few launch titles.

@XxXDarkness0XxXWhats with all the kisses at the start and end of your name, is it a brony thing blowing kisses to each other?

Also i assume your "gamming career" is very short otherwise you would have expected a lack of games a few months after console release, just like every other console release in history.

You could always jump to the X720 with its last gen resolution and laggy "snapping" and see if its (still not working as advertised) webcam can make up for MS releasing another console thats using 2005 resolutions while still double charging you for free internet services like a browser or tv streaming.

Sony, just like last gen will deliver top rated games as they always do and other devs taking time to release PS4 games is hardly Sonys fault.

No point bawwing when release dates for games were known for months before the consoles release and only a handful have been pushed back.  Why did you even buy the thing at release when it was known for ages before hand that initial game numbers were going to be thin?

Tomcat2007

@elaisse2  I heard the PS4 Camera is actually selling very well.  GameStop and other large retailers are actually increasing the prices on them just recently due to demand.

@los101278 The only problem with Sony making a VR headset is that if (and that's IF) it's lower quality than then Occulus Rift, then we're going to get flooded with sub-par equipment, due to Sony's manufacturing might, and then the market will likely shrug it off like it has with 3D TV, thus pretty much killing off consumer VR.  That said, they've had similar technology that's as good as OR's for a while now, so it's largely just a wait and see thing.

@xboxoneanddone  Do you literally just type crap to be as cynical as possible? You remind me of the episode of southpark where stan thinks everything sounds like crap. @charlesswann  I sort of agree with you. I am thinking more at the $300 for just the headset, maybe even a little more depending on what they use. All I know is that it can not and will not be priced like their other HMD's at the $1000+. They would never compete at that so people mentioning the prices for their premium HMDs can stop being so fucking retarded. Common sense is not so common in the comment section.

los101278
los101278

I don't think sony is that stupid in bringing something out and pricing it that high. Maybe, maybe $400 at best. If they go higher then that then I think it's a bad move on their part but I dought it that they will try to sell a 1000 device to a middle class gamer.

I hope I'm right

WingChopMasta
WingChopMasta

@Slammer612  This is some what of a concern. You are right, they don't market or really care for most of their peripherals in the past but let's give them one last chance. They did a complete 180 on the direction of the PS4 and Vita so lets see if they can care for this new device.

Ton of negativity for no reason really why don't you go checkut a titanfall article for that. You guys think Kinect is a gimmick Then praise this like it's a god truly you sheep don't mind paying your cash to something that will fail and be dropped like a bad habit. You know the sony way. If it don't sale then fuck over those who bought it. At least i got a kinect with the ONE AND ONLY. But it's gonna be different when you have to buy the ps4 camera For 60 and these ultra gimmick glasses for AT LEAST 350 sony ponies will never change

blackace

@charlesswann What planet are you from? Sony used to make quality products, but over the last decade or so, they have gone down hill. Their HDTV quality has dropped. They literally had to sell their PC/Laptop division because it was doing so poorly. My Sony LCD HDTV died after just 2 years. This was happening to 1000's of other consumers who had the same line of HDTV's. Even the PS4 had (and still has) a lot of issues. BLOD, corrupted saved games, disks getting stuck in the drive, the PS4 deleted full version of games from the HDD, PSN issues, etc...

xboxoneanddone
xboxoneanddone

And how many p does titanfall run on ps4 and i guess it's pretty hard to have games run lower than 1080p when you only have 6 of them to play.

now excuse me my titanfall match is starting and im actually happy with my console purchase

@blackace @charlesswannI'm not sharing your sentiment, none of my Sony gadgets died. Let's see:

PS2 - still going strong

PS3 - still going strong

PS4 - of course, it's brand new

Sony DVD videocam - retired as DVDs are silly media to use today, but otherwise good as new

Sony RX100 digicam - built like a little tank, great stuff

Vaio S laptop - abused by my wife for last 3.5 years, no problems

Playstation 7.1 wireless headset - works with PS3, PS4 and PC

PS3 BT hands-free - I'm using it for my Lumia phone BT these days, actually much better than my Jabra BT

2x PS2 controller, 2x PS3 controller, 2x Move controller - all work perfectly fine, some of them heavily abused

Sony eReader - good as new

PSP - no problem (wasn't used a lot, but anyway)

I'm probably missing something here, but you get my point - personally I have ZERO reason not to be happy with Sony.

KainsLegion
KainsLegion

@somebodysilent @blackace @charlesswann  agreed.  I stand in the majority of those who have Sony products that are still running strong.  Although I can't speak for TV's as I own Samsung and LG purely because at the time they were great quality and for an incredible boxing day price.

For the right price and support, I'd purchase the VR headset; all I ask is the opportunity for a hands on test.
