The official story: See below.

What we heard: Gun-happy gamers can't wait until the release of Black, Electronic Arts' first-person shooter that its creators refer to as "gun porn." The Xbox and PlayStation 2 game has already gone gold and is scheduled for release February 28.

Unfortunately for EA, some gamers are already unloading clip after clip and blasting through the game. The game is rumored to have been leaked onto the Internet a few weeks before it hits shelves. Files that are apparently the PAL version of the game have begun appearing on servers and torrents for anyone to download.

The Web site Console News has a listing for the game in its database of pirated games, but does not tell gamers where to download it. GameSpot has found a site that has a list of sequential files titled "Black-PAL-XBOXDVD" on it, with all but one of the 33 files weighing in at 47MB apiece. However, the files were not downloaded to test authenticity.

This doesn't mean that any Joe Schmo with an Xbox and an Internet connection can grab the game and begin blasting away. The file must first be found, burned to DVD, and played in an illegally modded Xbox or PS2.

So if it is indeed the full game, how does it get leaked on the Internet? Hackers? Covert espionage? The answer is possibly closer to home. In light of EA's recent layoffs of more than 300 staffers, a disgruntled employee may have actually thrown the game onto the Web to spite the company.

A high-profile game getting leaked on the Internet before it's released!? Stop the presses! Though steps have been made to slow illegal trading, piracy remains rampant and is incredibly difficult to police. Obviously, it isn't just games that make their way around the Internet illegally; the film and music industries are really struggling with pirated versions of their products hitting the Web, with many merely a few clicks away.

EA had little to say on the matter, and making the best out of the situation, used the opportunity to promote the game: "EA does not condone piracy. EA looks forward to delivering Black, a world-class game, on February 28 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. "

Bogus or not bogus?: Criterion worked good and hard on this game, so we hope it's bogus. Unfortunately, it's looking more and more not bogus. As for a disgruntled ex-employee throwing the game on the Web for all to see? If it's true, only one person knows for certain.

It is definately true, I've seen links for it. However, you need a mod chip for your ps2 to play it.

fps' are generally better on pc anyway, *awaits flame from all the xbox fanboys*, piracy does hardly anything to money companies make, if it had the much impact i doubt they would bother. Most people download games nowadays because half of the time their crap, and just delete em.anythin that is actually worth the money people generally go and buy anyway. kinda like a car, you wouldn't buy a car without ever seeing it running would you. it wouldn't be so bad if GAME still let you take games back for being crap now, but you know why they dont, because lots of them are. As for black, most people dont even know how to burn console games, and i dont know very many people with a chipped xbox/ps2 and btw whoever said post all the ip's, copyright homo's dont go after the downloaders, its uploaders most of the time

ya kow.. Piracy has been around since the Cassette Tape... I really dont see how its ever hurt anything...prices of games went up 60 dollers because of production costs, not because of piracy... BTW. its not a Rumor, "My friend" downloaded it, and its a kick ass game, Kinda short though, iam sure hes glad he did not pay the 40 bucks for it!!!!! But, its an amazing game, Go buy it if you like the nice packaging!

Piracy exists also because game companies prefer to focus their efforts in 3 zones (USA-CANADA / EUROPE / JAPAN-ASIA PACIFIC). For people like me (living in Latin America), bootlegs seem to be the only way to get the games, because game companies don't really care about Latin America / Africa / Other Asia zones. In my case, having a GameCube takes me out of the "dirty camp". All my games have been painstakingly bought and imported (paying almost the double of their official price), so it is hard to blame other people for the lack of attention of the big companies. Just my opinion, though...

Although I have no love for big companies like EA, piracy hurts all true gamers in the long run.

the game is ok but they was it was presented was a total rip off of fear so who cares it's ea they are mega game company. this won't hurt them in the least but it's some pretty good revenge i suppose

Because BLACK is going to be an awesome game and someone just wants to kill its hype. I don't really care, I'm still getting the game and ENJOY it.

not to be a pc fanboy but be real with yaself ppl. you can't outshoot a mouse & keyboard setup with a console controller. it'd jus be an excercise in frustration. especially in the year 3000

It had to be some sort of leak I suppose. But not from any of the US employees of EA. So far the only versions I had seen released were the PAL versions and that was sometime last week. It's nothing new really, in fact the game would have ended up on the internet eitherway, it just happened to come out a few days earlier then usual.

I would have expected the company to do something to keep Ex employees from leaking games

the game black arrive to piracy 1 week ago same thing happened to 24 the game the pre release version of the game. drakengard 2 pal version same thing happened also a game that konami was working on sword of etheria no us release only pal and japan release seems the companies that handle the games in europe to distribute them are bs the companies that hire them.

I'm suprised all you yanks find piracy such a 'new' or 'suprising' thing! Down under its pretty standard stuff, but we pay 100 a game not 50 and under. So ppl down here say **** that, ill burn rather than pay 100 dollars. Personally I like to have originals. When u burn, you accumulate a HUUUGE library that u never end up playing anyway. By the way, since Rogue Agent, I dont trust EA anyway. They have become so disgustingly complacent. This will probably be one of those games that looks great in pics and vids, but siht when you play it. Like Rogue Agent. Someone (like SEGA) needs to knock them off their perch.

First of all: This is sooo old news. And second: This happens to every game. Why would it be bogus? Halo 2 was stolen and put on the net, you can get nearly every game before it's out if there is a modified console around. Honestly, if you think piracy has decreased you must be blind. And to write this in rumor control is showing lack of news for gs. This is old and yes it's true. Every journalist has had this confirmed by his sources.

'"m not buying it even if I where to get the piritated version. What software developers don't think about is that they don't lose any money on pirited software, if people wheren't going to buy the retail version anyways. If I have a copy of a pirated game, it's not like they don't have one less unit to sell." Logic fails. Get out.

I've been kindof wondering why there is even an article about this? Why would someone care about this game over the thousands of other leaked/pirated games. There have been a lot of pirated games since Black... why an article about this one game now?

I personally think... WHO CARES.. all these greedy developers and distrubuters who charge through the teeth for crap, to honest gamers because they can deserve it. Make the games cheaper and piracy wont be such a issue.

EA acquires companies that previously had a working relationship of a developer and a publisher, and stops at nothing to get the leverage against its global competitiors. It is not only EA, this kind of hand-wringing of a creative process in games applies to other companies such as Take Two and Activision. Coming just short of releasing the exact same game with graphical facelift, these multibillion corporations have this spartan release window that foregoes nothing to unleash bugged and half-hearted excuse of games on unsuspecting crowd that were fed enough marketing and hype blitz. I view them as exploiting the goodwill of gamers and taking them for granted. That a high profile game under its wings got leaked and probably compromised of its retail value (because what you download is what you get for a console game), elicits ridicule and derision from gamers is a very telling sign how even piracy is now seen as a legitimate means of 'shaking them up'.

The PC FPS nerds are beginning to make me laugh. They think they're part of some sort of elite gaming faction, when all they're doing is being suckered into upgrading their system every week or so. I don't mind buying a console every 6 years that costs less than a PC. I don't care if they don't perform graphically as nice as a PC. But as far as controlling FPS's with a keyboard and mouse? Screw that, i'm much more precise with a standard control pad. Maybe I just don't like PC Gaming... Oh well. I certainly am not missing out on anything I care about.

if this is true, why cant this guy just forget about EA and get a better job. Working at EA would be AWESOME to have as a previous job. think of what kind of job he can get now since he had experince working at EA, unless this is true, then he might work at some gas station making 7.50 a day. that job really sucked!
