And Microsoft's free Xbox 360 games for March are…

Hope you like strategy games!

Microsoft has announced the two titles it will distribute for free to Xbox Live Gold members in March as part of its ongoing Games with Gold program.

First up is Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, the 2008 spin-off of the strategy series which compresses the sprawling experience down into a breezier, slightly more manageable experience. The game will be available for free from tomorrow.

GameSpot awarded Civilization Revolution a score of 9 in its original review. It's worth a look, basically.

Then from March 16 through to the end of the month, Microsoft will then offer up Xbox Live Arcade title Dungeon Defenders.

February's Games with Gold were Dead Island and Toy Soldiers: Cold War.

At the start of February, Microsoft exec Phil Spencer said that we could expect to hear about the Games with Gold scheme reaching Xbox One "fairly soon".

Why the hell are these stupid games region locked???

Meanwhile on PS+...Tomb Raider and Dead Nation can be downloaded for free..

Sorry to say but out of Gold,PS+ and STEAM...Gold obviously provides the worst deals and offers although Civ Rev is a pretty good game but its also pretty old..

who can genuinely say that if GWG moved to the "rental" service PS+ have with better games that you would not prefer it?

MS seem to have forgotten everything they did right launching and marketing the 360. they were ahead of the competition and stayed there for 6 or 7 years. Now they are behind and without x box one games for gold they are getting further behind. As a value proposition looking at the two consoles sony have the cheaper console, better cross platform games and the better subscription service. sure x box live is currently a better online service for now, but their other offerings in the x box live area are limited by paywalls.

Civ Rev is awesome. I always thought about going back and playing it some more. This works great. Couldn't care less about Dungeon Defenders. Got it from PS+ a little bit back, and thought it was pretty mediocre then. Toy Soldiers is a better defender type game anyway.

Damn, more disappointing games with Gold. Microsoft is really dropping the ball compared to the games with PS+. Also when is MS going to give free games for XBOX One owners? They really got to re-evaluate what they are doing and get on the ball.

Seriously, PS+gave a nearly brand new game and live to combat this gives you....wait for it....a 6 year old game.

...let that sink in....

Sid Meier is a genius and I get to play this for free, brilliant Microsoft and thank you

Xbox needs to step it up, PS4 received Outlast last month, even the PS3 selection has had great titles. My primary console is loosing the special membership incentive program with the selection of free games.

I'm mostly thankful that I've only actually owned 3 of the games with gold offerings so far.  Even those 3 were nice to get in a way I don't need the physical disk in the drive anymore.  Even if I owned all of them, I feel no need to complain about it.

Yes, PS+ has newer games that might have sold more - so there's actually a better chance people already do own most of those.

Naquada

I like Civ Rev. I have to say though that while Xbox Live was a much bigger no-brainer 6 months ago, I've definitely gotten far more value out of my PS+ membership since.

I've heard people try to make points about why one is giving better stuff than the other, but in the end, as a consumer, do I give a shit? I don't care why either of them do what they do, as long as I keep being the benefactor.

I do love the fact that nobody here seems remotely happy about getting a free game. So what if they're older games? They're still quality ones. Why are Sony fanboys so determined to make Xbox gamers feel like sh*t about their purchases? Why not, you know, just play your own console and have fun with it, and let other people do the same? Or is your new console so dull that you really have nothing better to do than bash the other and it's related services online?

@Navardo95  The problem here is if you unsubscribe to PS+ you lose all those games. On Xbox you keep them for as long as they're available to download, even if you unsubscribe. PS+ is much better as long as you're paying for it. Soon as you're not games for gold is a much better program.

Dead island > Outlast

@Stinger78  PSN offers "better" and "newer" titles, b/c they want PS owners to pay up for plus.  PS+ is a new brand, not established, and is coming from a service that was once free.  Once PS+ has been around in its current form for a few years we'll see what games are coming out as "free".  Xbox live has been established for a long time and newcomer Sony is trying to get their share of the market and that's one way they are trying to gain customers.  It's a good strategy, but don't be fooled into thinking they care about you, the care about getting your money, even if it's more costly upfront.

snaketus

@Naquada  I think PS+ has been way better option for much longer time than 6 months now.

northArrow

@robotiggy You wrongfully assume that everyone criticizing the Xbox is a "Sony fanboy" when in reality a lot of us are Xbox owners tired of getting the short end of the stick. Sony fans don't make us feel like shit about our purchases - Microsoft has already done that for us.

Although you do have a point that the games are free (or sort of anyway considering a paid sub is required), the problem is that the "quality" you mentioned isn't there. Some of the worst games I've ever played have come from the Games with Gold promotion. This promotion should be encouraging us to explore different genres, experience the work of different developers, try games and maybe buy games we wouldn't normally have purchased otherwise. Instead, we've been given the crap that won't sell anyway.

When you compare the offerings of PS+ and XBL, it should be obvious to everyone what the better value is.

I play a game then trade it unless it is one I really really like. I have no problem not owning a game that I would've never kept to begin with. Try again.

@sammoth @Anthonyccc  rent it for free. so what? Is there any point to this constant rehashing of the same tired point. I'd rather "rent" bioshock infinite and Metro 2033 for free for as long as i keep my PS+ subscription than "keep" a 6 year old game. and i think given the choice so would 99% of people.

vallee05

RobDev

@Vegeta-sama @vallee05  you keep them as long as you keep your subscription. I'd rather "rent" a new game for nothing than "keep" an old shitty game for nothing. also outlast, day one free on PS+. how many x box one games have they given away yet?

Slammer612
Slammer612

@Vegeta-sama @vallee05right... because there are so many games you replay after you beat them once.  Have to love the psychological thinking of this considering the fact that this is all digital, and when Xbox discontinues live from the 360 like then did the normal xbox that those game you theoretically owned are not there no more.

I will take my "rented" game, beat it, remove it and move on.

@spenceslivn @Stinger78  PS+ launched nearly 4 years ago. how long does it need to be around for? Also for PS3 users ps+ is not necessary, only for PS4 users.

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

Ps+ has been around for years. They gave away mostly crap at the beginning like dlc and small games, discounts were their greatest offers. After awhile the perks got better, and better, as more people subscribed. Now it's a great game extravaganza, and it's only going to keep getting better. On the ps4 Sony offers free mmo's that don't require ps+, and all other online non-gaming apps are not behind a paywall. Microsoft offers old games you could buy for $10, or less, and keeps all non-gaming online apps behind their paywall, because that's how much they respect our business. Seems like a very American way to run a company to me.

northArrow
northArrow

@spenceslivn @Stinger78 Of course they don't "care" about me personally. You're implying that Sony's attempt at gaining customers is a bad thing when in truth it benefits consumers who have a PS+ subscription. It's working, these games make their network far more appealing to me than XBL. Microsoft could learn something from them, right now it feels like their just taking us for granted

ahpuck
ahpuck

@spenceslivn @Stinger78PS+ is not new, it's been around for a while now. Xbox gives you old games, cause that's what kind of company they are.

@Whiskey3romeo @robotiggy Amen to that brother. Since Microsoft pissed me off with Xbone DRM and shit, I have cancelled my Xbox live, sold my Xbox360 and Lumia and bought PS4, PS Vita and Sony Z1. Now when I have been using them for a few months I can see that Microshit has been ripping me off for years. Only my wife is pissing me off because she loves Surface I bought for her. :-)

@northArrow  I'm happy with the games I am getting. They are all nice changes of pace games that I may have been interested in but never purchased. your satisfaction is solely on you.

naomha1
naomha1

@northArrow  Man, I couldn't have said it any better. My Live subscription is paltry compared to my PS+ subscription. Last month on PS I got Metro Last Light, Bioshock Infinite and Remember Me. Last month on Gold I got Dead Island and something else I didn't even bother with. This month on PS+ we're getting Tomb Raider and another game that escapes me at the moment. Gold, again, is offering shite. If Microsoft isn't even going to try to make us happy, why should I bother with a new next gen system from then? That PS4 just looks better and better all the time. While I've been happy with my 3rd Xbox (2 RRoD), no exclusives lately, nothing shocking or new for just their system whatsoever. PS3 I've gotten The Last of Us, Metal Gear Legacy Collection, Beyond Two Souls, Tales of Xilia, Tales of Graces F, Persona 4 and a few others. My 360 is just sitting there blinking at me. The last exclusive I got for that was the last GoW and that game was just meh at best. Looking forward to the future, 360 is getting Titanfall but that's gonna be a PC purchase most definitely. Are exclusives going bye bye now? I mean, if everything is going to be cross platform, might as well just put their money together and make one console to rule them all. Of all the newest "next-gen" consoles releases, this one has been, by far, the absolute worst and lamest of them all. There's hardly any games for either console and everything coming out is going to be available for current gen platforms except for just a couple. Makes absolutely no sense to worry about upgrading right now until both systems have about 70+ games under their belt. Paltry pickings, man.

grenadehh

@northArrow  @northArrow  No one is getting the short end of the stick. Quit crying. If some of the "worst games" you've "ever played" were actually in GWG, you have a frightfully brief gaming career. I've played games exponentially worse than the worst game you could possibly pretend was free with gold, long before there even was an Xbox, and you don't know what you're talking about.

But you're going to cry about them. Because you think that you "Earned" getting every 10 out of 10 game from last generation (by the way there aren't any) for free just because you paid 5 dollars to MS? Seriously, it's pathetic. GWG was never meant as a system seller. It isn't there to get you exploring more genres and games, it's there to give you shit to play.

Crying about getting free games and then not liking those free games is completely. asinine and you're a brat. All of you, are brats. If you're so deeply offended and disappointed, go to PlayStation and please don't ever use Xbox again.

Then you can cry again when PS+ gives you games you already own or already played or don't give a crap about.

RobDev

@Giarccpsn @spenceslivn @Stinger78  exactly, they charged for online use and sony didn't. then sony started giving out games. and discounts and suddenly games with gold appeared.

naomha1
naomha1

Not bragging. Just happy with the service. I've been Gold since day 1 and I can tell you what I've gotten with my money. Nothing. I'm on my 3rd xbox because of the RRoD. I've got no free base collection with my subscription like the ps+ service and I have had to pay MS to play with friends after I've already doled out hundreds for the system and another $60 per game. The above mentioned person said it well. Sony didn't make me a Sony fanboy MS did. I really like both of my consoles, but which gives me more bang for my buck? Definitely the ps3. More exclusives, a free base game collection with my ps+, really good games on a monthly basis and my ps3 hasn't choked once. Now with all this ridiculousness about the Kinetic being used by NSA to spy into your home pretty much put the icing on the cake for my next console purchase. When MS can stop treating me like an unlimited wallet I'll be a fan again. Also, even though the ps4 is now a mandatory ps+ subscription, I'm already paying for one that treats me better than MS does. Don't you find it kind of odd that basically every other day there's something "new" that MS has to patch or fix on their new system? Then you have the 1080p debacle that MS says their system can do it but devs are pretty much saying you're lying. I don't know man. For a "next gen" system my pc still whoops on them hands down. I get 1080p, hell I get 5760x1080 on my pc. That triple the resolution of any console. Also, I own 3 hdtvs in my home. 1080p all of them. I've got a bluray player because I love the picture. Who in the hell wants to play at 480 or 720 anymore? I thought this was next gen not last gen with more blinking lights. It's a rip off.

@spenceslivn Sorry to pop your bubble, but despite the fact that Xbox Live is older than the PSN, it was Sony who started to give games on the PS+ first, then suddendly GWG appeared. And the online gaming on PS3 IS STILL FREE, it's the PS+ subscription that's an EXTRA feature the one that costs money

RobDev
RobDev

@spenceslivn @naomha1 @northArrow  they made PS+ mandatory for the PS4 which will grow thier subs base yet the STILL give day one free PS4 games. how many games for gold xbone games are there?

tigress666
tigress666

@spenceslivn @naomha1@northArrowOk, even if what you say is true, so what? You'd prefer to be on the system that takes you for granted and gives you less value? I don't care who is established and who isn't, I'm going to go with the one that actually has the better stuff. If MS doesn't like it, maybe they should actually try to compete. In fact, GwG is them trying to compete (there is no way they wouldn't be doing this if Sony wasn't getting good attention for the great offerings of PS+. I mean the whole reason you get to keep the games is MS trying to one up PS+).

canuckbiker
canuckbiker

Your logic is xboxlive is an older more established product so why should they try hard, or act competitive? Ok, if that's how like to spend your money good luck in life.

Btw psn is still free on ps3.

spenceslivn
spenceslivn

@naomha1 @northArrow  There's a reason they are giving you "better", "newer" games.  It's b/c PSN+ is not an established brand and they are trying to win over consumers.  Xbox live has only been top dog for the last 14 years, so they are slower to dole out things that will cost them more money.  It's basic economics.  We have the new entry and the established brand.  You may think you're benefiting, and that's fine, but you seem to forget just a couple years ago all you bragged about was free PSN.

@grenadehh Oh look it's grenadehh again whining and crying that someone has the audacity to criticize his precious Xbox again. Boy you've got me this time, another insipid tirade about how we should all just be thankful to Microsoft for taking our money

How dare I want to get value from my subscription I'm paying for. How dare I think Microsoft should try to mimic the superior service offered by their major competitor.

Well done again grenadehh, you really are a champion of shallow, short-sighted business policies, no wonder you love Microsoft so much
