American McGee out of money, turns to Kickstarter

Alice developer's Spicy Horse Games asking for $200,000 to finish free-to-play title Akaneiro: Demon Hunters.

by

Designer American McGee--noted for his work on Alice and Alice: Madness Returns--is out of money. McGee and Spicy Horse Games have thus launched a Kickstarter campaign to finish free-to-play game Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, asking for $200,000 by February 2.

"We desperately want the final form of Akaneiro to represent the great amount time and effort that’s gone toward getting it this far," reads a line from the game's Kickstarter page.

"To finish what we've started and present Akaneiro to our players in a truly final state, we need to deliver our promised features to all target platforms. The problem is we’re out of time and money to do so. That’s where you come in…"

At press time, the fund stands at $6,067 pledged from 123 total backers.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters has been in development since mid-2011, and a closed beta for the game kicked off during November 2012. The game is targeted for platforms including Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS.

Spicy Horse Games has submitted Akaneiro: Demon Hunters to Steam's new community-focused Greenlight platform. If greenlit, the game will also be available on PC through through Valve's popular distribution hub.

I'm probably one of maybe 5 people in the world who actually enjoyed Bad Day LA. lol.  Granted I only paid about $5-10 for it several years after it was released...  Wish he was making that Wizard of Oz game instead :/

hmmm we'll see how this turns out.

Since this game DOESN'T NEED but most likely WILL FEATURE M-content, I spit on it and hope that it fails, and doing so is wholly justified when I get spammed with garbage options for new games and deprived of potentially-enjoyable experiences needlessly ruined.

maybe the reason they're out of money is because they're making F2P games

just say no to free to play (or really should be called pay to win) games.

I like the art style and music.  F2P makes this one a tough sell.  The business model looks ok, but unlike other Kickstarter campaigns, it doesn't feel like you get a lot of value for your contribution.  You truly are contributing to see the game finished.  I'll pass on this one, but I do hope they meet their goal.

"We desperately want the final form of Akaneiro to represent the great amount time and effort that?s gone toward getting it this far," - So... Sega sometimes does that with there games and it manages to get off retail shelves with bugs and glitches and they learn from their mistakes and also EA did the same a decade ago and released games with bugs and whatever. We complained but EA learnt from their mistakes.

This is a free to play game aswell... you want me to invest my money so some company will make nothing out of it? What's the point of that?

Why are they asking for money again?

This doesn't really appeal to me at all, but I donated a little anyway, as I loved American McGee's Alice as well as his excellent work, particularly his level design, back during the id Software days.

I really like the Okami painted style, so looking forward to this.  Always a little leery of 'free to play' games though.

I cant stand developers who try to make MMOS without the necessary capital. How many APBs do we need?

American McGee is a douchbag. He thinks he's so smug pioneering to China and creating a studio, saying it's got great opportunities and bla bla, then BAM he needs money. Anyone who pledges money is basically giving the Chinese economy money, and they kind of don't need it...at all.

LOL is this like trolls day out or something? :)

Game looks alright to me, and I thought Alice was a very well made, very creative bit of gaming goodness if somewhat underrated. And I'm sure everyone here have heard of Doom (supposing you're old enough to have played the original eh kiddies?) and Quake? Grimm maybe?

You know what I like about Akaneiro? It's different -- cos what I see out there at the moment are Diablo clones with knights and dragons and dwarves and zombie undead; you've seen them all and it gets (at least to me) kinda stale

I can see McGee's trying out something new -- an F2P game based on Japanese folklore and seriously it looks damn good and I'm more than happy to to help him and his Chinese team get it out there

And hey, if end of the day they're $20 short of 200k (remember that kickstarter fail kiddies? LOL), I still get to keep my $20 and so will everyone else

.. but if they DO meet the target, I get my fridge sticker or tshirt or snowglobe thing, and more importantly an F2P that is MORE THAN boring old chivalrous knights and dragons and elves is available to the gaming masses; and to me at least, the gaming world is headed in a new and interesting direction :)

Disclaimer : I am neither related nor affiliated nor an acquaintance of Mr Mcgee. I am just another internet nobody probably living in Mom's basement putting in his 2 cents worth

If this was a kickstarter for another Alice game I woukd be on board. Unfortunately, it isn't, so I'm not. So...there.

I don't have anything against American McGee. I never even played any of the Alice games. This game isn't appealing to me. It won't be free if we have to pay him to finish the game. I'll keep a eye on it to see if they reach their goal. I'm already backing 2 other games on Kickstarter and that enough for now.

Please help raise $200,00 for a game that will most likely be bad... Already off to a bad start for a Free to Play game, might want to reword that.

Looks like a ugly Diablo 3

Would love to donate, Alice and Quake were centerpieces of my gaming days when I was a kid, unfortunately I'm in the same situation as McGee, no money, especially after Star Citizen cleaned up my wallet.

As for the game itself, I believe it has enough Steam following to meet the goal, F2P can be great if done right, similar to MechWarrior Online, and not World of Tanks or Hawken, the game aesthetics and settings are unique, best of luck to him.

Wow so much hate. Take it easy on the guy. Alice madness returns was amazing and totally underrated. McGee is a good designer and his Chinese team has some real talent. That being said, I'm not a fan of top down hack n slash rpg so Akaneiro doesn't interest me that much. The art style is quite appealing though. It reminds me of of a particular level in madness returns.

There's a reason they ran out of money, the game isn't meant to be.

American McGee...the last time his name meant anything was 13 years ago, when "Alice" came out. He's been a washed up has-been ever since, producing terrible game after terrible game since. He has bankrupted not one, but two companies as a result of it.Why anyone still gives this kickstarter nonsense the time of day is amazing. It has been home to more money scams than actual follow-throughs of projects..I'm going to make a kickstarter to help pay for my rent, and the rewards for different value donations will be various objects and items from my living quarters, which include toilet paper, pencils used down to the nub and a chance to win a 60 second "grab what you can" dumpster dive at my garbage bin.

Does anyone ever ask the question WHY someone needs "$200,000", as in where is that money going and what constitutes such a high amount? How do we not know they might need something like $50,000 and are just lining their pockets with the rest? There is NO accountability whatsoever to justify the kinds of goals they're claiming to need, let alone a guarantee that the project will come through in the end because the majority always "close" last second.

I love the $10,000 or more pledge. You get a fully-paid trip to Shanghai, China to have dinner with the team. Well, no shit. You just paid for the trip for you and the entire cast to fly to Shanghai along with all their dinners. Of course it's fully-paid for.

The art style for the game is pretty interesting, looks like they've taken inspiration from classical Japanese paintings. Looks really good imo, hope they're able to finish the game sometime in the near future.

Kickstarter has alot of potential for abuse. Quite a few high profile devs are *suddenly* out of money. David Graben, Molyneux and the guys pretending to be Black Isle Studios.

Molyneux could obviously have funded his own f*cking game. Black Isle might aswell just go to a major publisher imo. The fact that they dont smell of scam because they release virtually nothing about their game, insult their fanbase and rely on donations with no actual benefit for the donators.

Other people like David Graben and Chris Roberts have very solid reasoning for choosing kickstarter. They've both been screwed over by publishers before, essentially being forced to make a half-assed product instead of their original vision because publishers didnt think it would sell. With a direct gamer <-> developer relationship they can ensure this doesn't happen. And now McGee ... Is he a liar? I dont know. I dont think so but i dont know.

My point here is that Kickstarter is neither AWESOME or HORRIBLE. It has great potential and is an awesome tool for indie devs or devs who, for one reason or another, think its best to avoid a publisher.

On the other hand millionaries like Molyneux can take advantage of people on a service like this. It comes down to this: Inform yourself on the product  you're funding before you do so.

put the game on xbla, nintendo e-shop or psn and i will pledge about 15 euros for this, because THIS is what the gaming industry need's! sadly i don't have a gaming PC, Mac or any kind of tablet device so i'm not pledging a cent for it since i don't have any use of it.

@Crush_Project Lol? Most f2p games aren't even pay 2 win. Are you dumb? Like there's quite a few that are, but the solid majority isn't. I swear the average person on gamespot has played WoW and like 2 free MMO's and assume they know all there is to know.

@Suikogaiden How is it a scam?  Game development is an expensive business, and if someone wants to help fund a small developer, there's nothing wrong with that.  People that donate usually get something in return for their investment once the goal is reached and if the goal is not reached, they get their donated money back.

Where's the scam?

@sjawz3288  @Joe295159 ?? what's your point? if the $25 reward is for a signed poster, obviously some of that $25 is going toward the poster and the time taken to sign it, and the rest is going toward the company. that's the whole deal.. some chunk of the $200,000 goes toward the rewards being given out, of course

@sjawz3288  @Joe295159 well duh, if they dont have money now, how are they going to aford to pay someone to fly to there country??? im sure $2000 out of that $10,000 is going towards the trip.

@Daisak  @Suikogaiden Uhhhh WUT? American McGee and his crew are located in Shanghai, China. A city whose name, in verb form, means to screw people over via fraud. A place where, YES, you can disappear. Or not. Nobody gives a damn over there.

You honestly think a lawsuit from a bunch of stupid Americans with money to waste on a go-nowhere game developer is going to matter in CHINA? The land of unimpeded bootlegging, copyright infringement, and vastly varied other forms of theft and trickery? Hoo boy.

Daisak

 @Suikogaiden

Kickstarter isn't going to sue, kickstarter is the medium, the middle man, taking no responsibilities. The public, the pledgers can sue. This isn't some backwater third world country where you can disappear.

They would be sued for fraud, simple as that, they were payed for a product, they failed to deliver, they get sued.
