AMD K8 Already?
AMD plans to unveil some details of its upcoming "K8" processor at tomorrow's Microprocessor Forum.
Our sister site, ZDNN, reports that AMD will unveil some details on its SledgeHammer, or K8, processor tomorrow at the Microprocessor Forum in San Jose, Calif. While information is still sketchy at best, we do know that the SledgeHammer will be AMD's 64-bit answer to Intel's Itanium (formerly Merced). It will ship significantly later than the Itanium, which has a speculated release date of mid-2000, and it will not be compatible with software written specifically for the Itanium (probably because the SledgeHammer retains an x86 architecture).
We'll have more details about the SledgeHammer tomorrow.
