Amazon to release Android-based home console this year - Report

Worldwide retailer to release Android-powered home console; device to take advantage of Amazon content and include own controller.

Worldwide online retailer Amazon is reportedly working on an Android-based home console to take on the Ouya, according to a report by Game Informer.

Unnamed sources approached the website, revealing that Amazon already has a product in active development, and is believed to be aiming to release it before the end of 2013, possibly in time to reap the benefits of Black Friday sales.

According to the tip, the device will take full advantage of Android content already on the Amazon marketplace and available for the company's existing Kindle Fire tablet. The upcoming home console will reportedly also include its own controller, though no details were provided.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman recently confirmed that only 27 percent of Ouya owners have purchased games for the device.

GameSpot will update the story as information comes to hand.

Looking through the android store I realized android has no good games at all. A few games like plants verse zombies 2 or maybe spy vs spy on ios I would play, but nothing on android all its games suck.

Will it be an all-in-one entertainment box that allows you to switch between games and TV seamlessly?

Here Amazon goes again. Trying to be like Google and getting into all sorts of things they probably shouldn't be.

This is another reason I will not be buying Amazon stock in the next couple years. They're already losing money, now this...

I don't think they know what they're getting themselves into.

The Kindle Games market is small. They dont even have FFIV available yet... and it's been available on Google Play for, like, a year.

You don't buy a Ouya to play games. You buy Ouya to program. I can Ouya games on my SMART PHONE

Ouya's big problem:  $100 price tag.  Why would I pay that much to play a game I can already play on my tablet?  If Amazon can hit a $20-$30 price point, they'll get the sales, but I doubt the hardware can be made for that low.

I wonder if half these android consoles will even make it to their next iteration/update. I think instead of every one competing to make their own console they should actually band together and try to make something really special. Then they might actually have a fighting chance against the bigger consoles.

By the time we are deep into next gen there will be so many of these android consoles around that consumers will be too confused as to which one to buy. This will probably drive them away right into the eagerly waiting arms of recognizable brands Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo.

2D NES / SNES / Megadrive games are still better than every android game ever made.

Good possibility of a repeat of the 1983 video game crash in the near future.

Amazon + Google a match made in hell ! Amazon will be shafting everybody left right and center with some draconian DRM scheme and some Lovefilm style impossible to leave subscription based bullshit and Google will be spying on everyone. Basically everything which is bad about the xbone one and M$ except with the god awful Android running the show.

thats what people want, low-end hadware, like wii u and ouya, they're selling billions, also xbone will sell more than the more powerfull ps4

What made them look at the Ouya and say "Hey! We should make a console no one is going to buy too!"

Probably will out sell the Wii U, PhonyStation Vita and Ouya.

OUYA failed because it is weaker than my phone. (Samsung Galaxy Note 2), and lacks some needed features.

Amazon makes a nice tablet, but it far too restrictive, lacks important features and is underpowered. Expect the same business model from their console.

A nice competitor against the Xbox if you ask me! Two consoles from the same state. That's some serious competition!

All the people who donated money to kickstarter for the Ouya must feel really stupid right about now.

well, if they make a console that has a good web browser, more than 2gb of ram, use all the android apps that are available to tablets and phones, and as graphics that are on par with wii u and is sold at a low enough price, i would actually get one.

I will not buy a Wii U because the tech is laughable. All these Android based systems are way below the Wii U. Pretty much on par with a smart phone. No thanks.

We're creating a new console as competition for a console no one really uses!

fanirama

Android based consoles won't have good life. They should make their own OS. I use an Android phone but gaming on there is meh. A console based on Android (or iOS for that matter) isn't gonna cut it.

Don't be lazy Amazon. Go the extra distance, make a proper console to compete with Xbox360 and Sony PS4 and gamers will benefit. And so will you.

Whichever Amazon idiot exec sold this to their higher ups should be let go or demoted. A terrible decision. But they don't care. They'll make this a 2 year project, make money from Amazon and then leave. What is it with non-techie or non-common-sense idiots everywhere in management.

What a terrible idea. Releasing this against the x1 and ps4 and Ouya? Good luck Amazon...

Aphyosemion

Why?  Is the Ouya doing so amazingly well that it needs competition at this point?  Do people really want to pay more for big version of a console that they already have in their pocket?  I'm not getting the whole Android console thing.  It seems like such a small niche product that it doesn't seem like there is enough of a market for it at this point.

Hey!  Remember back in the 80s when random companies started producing all these different Pong-style consoles, thus oversaturating the market with all this hardware that practically does the exact same thing?

Remember what happened shortly after that?  :|

I'd be more excited if it was a android handheld.  The Android home console is good for casual gamers but I think I'd rather have a WiiU.

There's some great experiences on mobile, the problem is they're mainly designed for smartphones and don't always scale well on televisions.

@paulsifer42 And how much does a proper tablet cost? good luck getting one for 100$. 20-30$? that is an unreasonable price to put to a console. 60-70$ is quite a demanding mark to put up even.

Are you being sarcastic? How is them being "from the same state" relevant?

So WiiU goes into the Ouya category now?

paulsifer42
paulsifer42

@Warful @paulsifer42 That's exactly my point though.  If someone wants to play those games, they'll already have a tablet to play them on.  And the fact that you can't get a tablet for that cheap shows that they won't be able to make them for less.  I have a hard time believing they can make them cheap enough for many to want to buy them.  Maybe they'll prove me wrong, but I know I'm not in the market.
