Amazing Spider-Man game will serve as epilogue to movie

Wallcrawler's next Activision outing will see a return to free-roaming webswinging around New York City; Beenox developing game to debut next summer.

by

Spoiler alert! Spider-Man apparently survives to the end of next summer's blockbuster film The Amazing Spider-Man, as the game tie-in takes place entirely after the close of the movie.

The film and the game will both feature the new Spidey outfit.

Activision today confirmed a handful of details about The Amazing Spider-Man game, which is set to launch in summer 2012 around the same time as the Sony Pictures feature film of the same name. The movie, a reboot for the Marvel comics franchise starring Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, is set for a July 3 opening.

In addition to serving as an epilogue to the film, The Amazing Spider-Man will allow players to freely explore Manhattan as the friendly neighborhood superhero thwarts the sinister plans of "a variety of criminals" in a story penned by Seamus Kevin Fahey (Battlestar Galactica).

The game is in development at Activision's Quebec City studio, Beenox. No stranger to Marvel's iconic superhero, the studio began working with the wallcrawler for the 2005 PC port of Ultimate Spider-Man and took over primary development duties for the comic-based games with last year's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Its most recent outing with the hero was October's Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

A new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man game will be aired during Spike TV's Video Game Awards this Saturday, airing live at 8 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Pacific.

@CaptainHerlock Just realized there was something in my inbox concerning this. lol  I know that Webs isn't a dark brooding character.  That's not what I was saying.  My point was that the emotional impact of the darker things that lead to Peter choosing the path of a hero instead of chasing fame and fortune was horribly done.  I also feel that the representation of New York City was horribly done as well (no where near gritty enough).  If the comic books don't even portray the city as that corny why would a movie?  The fact that he is such a lovable and human character against these dark circumstances and the backdrop of a city that can be extremely harsh even for those with powers is one of the things that makes Spider-man great.  There are other things that I feel made the trilogy pretty bad as well.  His incredible wit was all but completely missing, his powers were very underwhelming (agility and speed didn't even come close, his spider sense was almost absent, only appearing when it added to the pop of a scene), his "darker side" when joined with the symbiote wasn't nearly menacing enough, the goblins were cheesy at best, Doc Oc was able to take way more of a pounding than he was supposed to (though the amount of punishment he could dish out was actually pretty accurate), and Venom... I don't even know where to begin with that. Simply put, it could have all been done much better.

@CaptainHerlock i dont think horizonwriter means he should be as dark as batman, just that maybe there should be a different approach? i liked the 1st spiderman (im not a big fan of tobey though) but it didnt really touch on peters inner problems like his parents deaths, his uncles death, his superhero life clashing with his school and home life. it was like hes peter, he gets bit and and his uncle gets killed, hes upset for like 10 minutes and then he swings about the rest of the film. im hoping amazing spiderman shows these conflicts and the split personality he seems to have. and i like the idea of focusing on his teenage years. i think its going to be a good film and hopefully a good game

Like SPEEDSTA89 said another game like web of shadows would be great while it was far from graphically stunning it had great gameplay and some very nice RPG elements

They have to make it like Spiderman Web Of Shadows, that was a fantastic game, it has a amazing movements and web swinging.

Spider-Man 2 was the best game of the series ever. Hopefully they'll come to realise that and act accordingly.

Spider-Man isn't a dark character but he is not a tool like in the movies.

CaptainHerlock

@horizonwriter See, that's where you're getting it all wrong. Spider-Man is not a "dark" character. Making him more like Batman is not being true to the character. Do you actually READ the Spider-Man comic? Because I do, and despite what Marc Webb WANTS you to believe, he's not a "dark" and brooding character. He's the same nice, affable kid he's always been. They're making him into The Dark Knight because the suits see dollar signs, and they also want to give it a more Twilight feel to it. And the Tobey Maguire movies were a "mess"? Really? It seems that MIB has already gotten to you. #3 may have been bad, but 1 and 2 were as good as any super hero movie out there. It's not the Dark Knight. I wish people would realize that. And not for nothing, but Christian Bale is a HORRIBLE Batman.

Dope! this may just beat all other movie Tie-ins if Beenox learns from its mistakes in the last two Spider-man games as well as the other movie tie-ins. They have great story telling ability. But they should stray away from repetitive mission themes, and power ups that don't make a difference. And most of all, button mashing gameplay. Add style and thought to the fighting

@KrazzyDJ I agree with you but we all know the result of games that comes with movies =( I just wish a game about Spider-Man with the same quality we see in the latest Batman games, but no film related...

A Spider-Man has so much untapped potential (just like a Batman game did). Rocksteady captured Batman's potential with Arkham Asylum. Lets hope some developer does that with Spider-Man !!!

Great, that means they should be working on their own schedule as of now. The original trailer looked like a sandbox game. I hope that it's like Spidey-2.

The game should come out at least a month after the movie has been released. By then millions of people would have either seen the movie or have heard what it's about.

Maybe it's me but i would want a follow-up to Ultimate Spiderman. that game was pretty good and had Venom as a playable character in it (much like the snes classic Maximum carnage) but in either case i'll give this game the benefit of the doubt and pray it turns out okay cause games based on movies have turned out bad.

@CaptainHerlock It's not the spider bite that makes the story, it's the reason for doning the costume and siding with good instead of greed. Think of it this way. Tim Burton's "Batman" made Bruce's parents' death into something cliched and cheesy whereas "Batman Begins" gave the subject matter a lot of weight. It showed the importance of his parents, particularly his father in the life of the boy, and because of that their death in the latter movie was much more powerful. The same can be done for Webs if they portray the relationship between Ben, May and Peter right. And trust me, we don't need a memory erasing device. Maguire's performances were forgettable all on their own. Like I said before, the first three Spider-Man movies were a mess and didn't leave much to work with. Could you imagine the dark movie a really good writer and director could make with just Venom alone? Hell, what about the next symbiote story for that matter. Just think of the movie where a defeated Venom has to team up with Spidey to take down a psychotic Carnage. There are a lot of great possibilities that were snuffed out with Raimi's films, hence the reboot. Sometimes things are so bad that it's better to start fresh sooner rather than later. Look at the Hulk. The second film was a reboot, came hot on the heels of the first one and did relatively well.

The movie is going to be bad. Rebooting a movie only 10 years old due to the studio messing up with Part 3 of the series and then expecting fans to eat it up is foolish on Sony's part. I'm not impressed with the new movie or this game. When are these companies going to learn to not rock the boat? We have Batman and Robin and Spiderman 3. Why is it the real folks responsible (the egg heads at the studio's themselves that over think everything) aren't the ones removed for the decisions rather than the people in front and behind the camera that people actually liked? No thanks. Passing on the new film. Looks like garbage.

Open world Spiderman?! About dang time you brought it back to what it's supposed to be. Sad though, Beenox could make an "Arkham City-esque" Spiderman game if only they spent a decent amount of time on it. No, they have to churn out a new one every year (I just imagine Bobby Kotick standing behind the Beenox employees, cracking a whip and shouting "work faster" as they hunch over their computers), which is why the games will always be average.

They should make a Spider-Man-game with the example of "GTA". You have a city, the "realism" which you can still alter to look like something for Spider-Man, and then of course you make it so you have a webslinging character with the right missions. Would be so awesome to see and play that...

CaptainHerlock

Here's my thing; do we need another retelling of Spider-Man's origin? Yes, he was bit by a radioactive spider. WE KNOW ALREADY. The only thing different now is that Peter Parker is a creepy, disaffected loner, who wears a hoodie, black jeans, combat boots, and rides a skateboard, who looks like he can be knocked over by a mild breeze. And they're rebooting a movie that's not that old. I hope they have the Men In Black device to wipe out our memories of Tobey Maguire. The only reason they're doing this is so Sony doesn't lose the rights to Disney.

mrzero1982pt2

basically they are saying "see the movie first, buy the game after the movie". they did that with enter the matrix, but it bridged the gap between final flight of the osiris and the matrix reloaded. but if the movie blows, and the game blows, people will be gypped out of 80 bucks. kinda leery now...

@slonekb05 Spiderman 2 for the original Xbox was an amazing (no pun intended) game. No reason this one can't. In fact it sounds like it might be a similar idea to that one.

Don't write the game off yet, folks. I saw the bootleg pre-beta footage and tell you all flatly that I was really impressed, especially by 2 things: 1) there was a sense of depth like you wouldn't believe, and 2) spidey was moving so fancy free...almost like an upgraded and deeper take on the web of shadows mechanics. But in the essence of fairness, I shall also list some concerns I had with what I saw (But remember...pre-beta): 1) though spidey moved well, and with a great sense of momentum, he did not stop well, i.e., no sense of impact was discernible (check 40 seconds on that video) and 2) his movement animations, though varied, looked a bit rigid.

SmokeRyu
SmokeRyu

There are two things this game will depend on. 1) It needs to go back to the sandbox design of the greatest spiderman games. 2) And this is the most important part. We need the web swinging from SM2 to make a return. After that game, they switched to that easy mode swinging garbage and it never felt the same again. If they do these two things we will have another great spider man game (like SM2...the ONLY good spider man game)...if not it is going to be a shiny piece of crap like all of the other spider man games after 2 (web of shadows was okay...but still didn't compare to 2 cause the web swinging sucked in comparison). The combat was cool in WoS...but the web swinging was a downgrade. Give us an upgraded spider man 2 or don't expect any of my money.

As long as Beenox doesn't screw it up, having a game serve as an epilogue to the movie would be cool.

Too bad the "Penned" Villains can't just randomly pop up in the game at random intervals, they could either escape or be put in jail. They could randomly break out of jail, and if successful they could disappear only to be put back into the random pool of villains again. Meanwhile, Spiderman would have to live his virtual life as Peter Parker, going on dates with Mary Jane, needing to work to pay monthly rent, do things around the city like go to the movies, go shopping, maybe for Mary Jane, or himself. Take a walk in the Park or just stroll around New York at night taking in the sights and sounds of the city, all while random crimes could randomly happen at any moment. Usually these Superhero games feel so meaningless because the Player just plays the game as the Hero, never facing the dilemmas of a Normal Life which can sometimes be just as challenging as the Heroic side... Maybe playing as Spiderman could give Peter happiness rewards or bonuses and playing as Peter could give Spiderman luck or better success at fighting, both sides of life should intermingle...
