Alone in the Dark bags Sleepers writer

Lorenzo Carcaterra writing the script for the latest incarnation of the survival horror game that started them all.

Detective Edward Carnby is about to face his most hair-raising adventure yet, as penned by blockbuster novelist Lorenzo Carcaterra.

Carcaterra was born and raised in New York's Hell's Kitchen and has worked as a journalist, TV consultant, and author. His novels include Apaches, Gangster, and Sleepers. Sleepers was made into a film in 1996, starring Hollywood legends Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and Brad Pitt.

The Eden Games-developed Alone in the Dark remake was originally unveiled by Atari at the 2006 Electronic Entertainment Expo. The new version of the game will feature the original hero, Edward Carnby, but will take place in modern-day New York--whereas the original was set in the 1920s. However, the game was delayed to fiscal 2008, and coming out on "formats we haven't even announced yet." The latest update adds a Windows PC game version to the roster.

According to the company line, the latest Alone in the Dark will feature a "dramatic and fast-paced storyline," advanced artificial intelligence, gorgeous visuals, and a "wide-open" (presumably sandbox style) environment to explore.

"Alone in the Dark was a challenge which allowed me to bring a realistic feel to an apocalyptic situation facing New York City and really dig into the Central Park conspiracy idea," commented Lorenzo Carcaterra. "It also allowed me to write for hard-edged characters, some good, some bad, all forced to confront a force whose power they could never imagine."

The first Alone in the Dark game was developed by Infogrames and released in 1993 on the PC, and it's believed to be the very first survival horror game, which set the benchmark for the huge amount of games in the genre that followed, including Resident Evil. Gamers chose to play as either Edward Carnby, a private detective, or Emily Hartwood, the niece of Jeremy Hartwood, an artist whose suicide is surrounded by suspicious circumstances.

A number of sequels followed the original, including Alone in the Dark 2, and Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. A Uwe Boll directed movie adaptation, also titled Alone in the Dark, featuring Christian Slater as Edward Carnby, was released in 2005.

Atari confirmed that Alone in the Dark would be coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but no estimated release date was given.

Alone is the Dark is a Hall of Fame classic, and with this latest incarnation targeting the top tier gaming platforms, I'm expecting big things.

There isn't a great track record when hiring an author to pen the story... Let's hope Atari did the right thing.

You cant base a movie on a game, same as you cant base a game on a movie

Having a good story is sometimes the biggest hit or miss target, but wasn't the game already shown in some sneak peak what not? I can only imagine if they bring the writer in at a later date like this what kind of pressure that can put on them. One weary gripe on my end is everyone likes the concept of sandbox gameplay, but then you place the setting in some overly used city like NY. Go the distance in sandbox terms and have Carnby travel the US in search of answers... it sounds like a major load but how else do you expect to impress gamers with such a elder franschise?

so no late 80's- early 90's teen sensations or tara reid as an archaeologist? terrible. that would've been the perfect game...

Love the horror genre, but the A.I.T.D. movie kinda stank, Uwe Boll should've done more, alot more. Very disapointing to see a great game turn into a complete waste of a movie.

Could be pretty good. But I am not into horrors.

With the PC version being thrown in as an 'afterthought'', I do not hold out a lot of hope. Plus with a very sparse PC gaming releases at the moment, I hope a PC market is around for this..... Certainly a sandbox open-ended game based around alone in th dark is very very interesting and different from the same ol' same ol' AD&D and sci-fi stuff we get....!!!

Taegre > Not Carnby, Carcaterra. The writer is born in NY. I really have hopes for this game. I've only played the first game, and it was awesome (and hard at the time). But this isn't a remake if the game isn't setting isn't right. The whole point of it being in the 1920's was awesome.

Bring it on! There are no decent Survival Horror games on next-gen consoles.

The original Alone in the Dark game was absolutely tremendous! It had a near-perfect balance of action and puzzle solving that has yet to be duplicated. It also had a very clever copy protection mechanism involving a small booklet fill of images from the game. You had to correctly name the object on a randomly chosen page before the game would start. I think I still have my copy stored away in my basement.

I miss old-lovecraft-like style of first part. Now days horror games have no style...

For gods sake. If your gonna do something, do it properly. Remaking a game set in the 20's and setting it in modern day is not doing it properly, especially when it's something as setting dependant as Alone in the dark. That's the reason 4 was rubbish.

Well, I can't jugde the game at this moment, but I bet it will be as good as the last game!.

This thing is never coming out at this rate. In any case, despite the technology, like many of today's games, it won't be as fun as the original. This modern day New York idea sounds bad already. Alone in the Dark's setting was always in some sort of hugh spooky mansion. This is probably going to have many fighting moves to cater to today's audience, which will destroy this game.

Alone in the Dark was not the survival horror game that started them all. That ignores games like Halloween for the Atari 2600, or even more obviously, Sweet Home for the Famicom. In fact, Resident Evil's creator Shinji Mikami admits that he based the game largely on Sweet Home.
