The officially licensed Major League Baseball game was developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and features all 30 MLB teams, more than 700 players, and a Cooperstown Hall of Fame team including Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, and Nolan Ryan. Modes of play in the game include exhibition, season, World Series, home run derby, and batting practice.

"We are thrilled to support the launch of Nintendo GameCube with one of our premier franchises, which is sure to be a hit among gamers this holiday season," said Steve Felsen, senior director of brand marketing at Acclaim. "All-Star Baseball 2002 combines next-generation technology with the power of Major League Baseball, delivering an unparalleled gaming experience."

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will serve as the game's official cover athlete. Acclaim's national television, print, and online campaign in support of the game's release will prominently feature Jeter.
