All PS Vitas $199 at Target August 18-24

[UPDATE] Price cut confirmed for 3G and WiFi systems.

[UPDATE] The Target weekly ad for August 18-24 released today confirms the price cut. All PlayStation Vita systems are $199 through the end of the week.

The original story is below

All PlayStation Vita systems will be marked down to $199 at Target beginning August 18 and running through August 24, according to a leaked Target advertisement obtained by Blu-ray Forums.

The ad specifies that "all PS Vita game systems" will be marked down. The handhelds currently retail for $250 for the Wi-Fi version and $300 for the 3G model.

Neither Sony nor Target were immediately available to comment.

The PS Vita received a price cut in Japan in February, but Sony said in February that no such price drop would be extended to North America due to exchange rates and other factors.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said at the time.

I don't know at this point there isn't anything on the system that I want to play. When the first PSP came out there was a ton of software i wanted to play on it... FF7 Crisis Core, (its crowning achievement if you ask me.) was one of my all time favorite games on that little Hand held.. not to mention the God of war games... Silent Hill, MGS Acid, Mgs P.O., Peace Walker, Kingdom Hearts... there was just a lot of reason to want one... unfortunately that isn't the case with the Vita.

I'd rather get a Nintendo Wii U at this point, and thats not saying much.

Its a shame really, the Vita is a fantastic piece of kit and I can only imagine its capabilities later on when developers get more confident, I hope for the sake of Handhelds that a title comes along to bolster its sales and make it a worthwhile endeavor for Sony.

I loved the PSP when I got one mine in 07' and continue to use it even now granted mostly for emulation but also for the games it had on its own.

Sadly though the price just deters people, even I bought a 3DS over saving for Vita but only really because of Pokémon X/Y other then that I'm not that interested in the 3DS line up. Something else that's note worthy is that the money you spend on a Vita will add up to the same as getting a 3DS + a good amount of games for it because the 3DS games are bloody expensive in comparison to PSVita titles.

What they should do is release Little Big Planet Karting Vita and Bioshock for the Vita and I will buy the bloody thing.

Anyone waiting on memory cards should wait till the sony gamescom conference as there have been rumors of price cuts going all around.

no thanks. my smartphone can do more than this handheld can ever do.

It seems tempting but I know there is a new version of this system around the corner.  I just know there is.  March next year they will announce a new version of the Vita that will probably launch in September 2014.  I just can't get a Vita now knowing that there will be a new one so soon.

Does that include the Walking Dead Bundle?

Memory cards as still too expensive.  And those that buy the 3G are stuck on AT&Terrible and have to pay deep out their colon for crappy service.  Still not worth it.

Sony should make them all that way, why are they waiting so long for this price drop.

I was very tempted to buy one and went to Target last night. It said "limited stock" but they had at least one available. I didn't pick it up.

$50 isn't a huge saving tbh and I think the system is still overpriced along with the ridiculous memory pricing.

I'll buy the system if it is for $149 with 4GB bundled or $199 with Wifi (3G not needed for me) and 32GB and bundled with a game.  Else there's not much point to the system.

I think the games are lacking for this system. Because of their greed and short sightedness. Excellent and perhaps the best ever handheld marred by bad business decisions are killing it.

i already confirmed i wouldnt pay over 99 bucks for 1 and thats only if it came with a game and over priced memory card

Why didn't they make a 3/4G and Wi-Fi version like smart phones?

MEFreak1984

So poor sales aren't enough to justify a price cut? Granted sales have improved since release, but not enough to warrant $250-$300 plus a memory stick, extended battery, and at least one game to play. Factoring all that in, it could cost as much as a PS4 depending on the memory stick. Hopefully Sony gets their heads out of their ass and makes a common sense move.

"Price cut" has quite a specific meaning, and cannot used interchangeably with "sale" or temporary markdowns. Tsk tsk, GS.

The screen isnt even HD or "retina". Theres a reason why the vita never sold, and its not because it was 249$. Why do you think Playstation would choose to bundle it with the PS4, basically making it only $100 lol. Its garbage, but its all ps4 has to offer in the competition

@Mayleene they already had a 3G/Wi-Fi version, which turned out to be a big failure

tigress666

@MEFreak1984 Agreed. I'd like to see Vita succeed but Sony needs to get real at this point and do some price reductions (on the hardware and memory cards) and work towards getting it a good system seller. Or at the least make that rumor about the 500 dollar bundle be true (seems to good to be true but I think that alone would be a really good push on the Vita).

@Xbox1SinceDay1 there is no psvita ps4 bundle and retina display came out after its release. so how could it be included also its something apple created. and the screen is fine and not true hd but higher than sd. by definition there is no hd small screens as no small screens are up to 1280×720p or i but hd size means something different on small screen as they use smaller pixles that big brother tv's. so the images look almost the same with less pixles.

monson21502

@Xbox1SinceDay1 ps vita was really just another version of the psp . sony couldnt even give it a good name no wonder it failed...

The only reason the vita is not selling well (in the US) is because there is not a lot of games

zeuanimals

@Xbox1SinceDay1 Right, where's the Xbox handheld? Is it the Windows phone because those things have no apps or games and MS is a software company.

And a handheld not selling because it's not HD? Every handheld ever is laughing at this statement, including the 3DS which is Nintendo's best seller at the moment. The Vita might not have 1080p resolution but that doesn't stop it from having games with great graphics. And retina display is BS. "You can't see pixels if you look from a far enough distance", text on the NES has retina display if you sit from a good enough distance. All the Vita needs is games, which they're looking to deliver with unique games like Tearaway and a quality shooter like Killzone Mercenary, who many people consider to be the best handheld shooter they've played and just a good and unique shooter in general.

I'm not expecting you to praise anything Sony has ever done, and I know you're going to praise everything MS has ever done. That's fine, fanboyism isn't a disease like every is saying, it's just a phase, like puberty, hating your parents, and cursing all of the time because you want to feel "bad".

@greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 poor desperate Sony, droping their price in order to compete with the so called "inferior" 3DS. Now I'll admit that a one week sale at Target is not a big deal, but the article does mention a price cut in Japan. I'm guessing that was a "permanent" price cut.

tjkraz
tjkraz

@greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 All gaming hardware comes down in price over time.  3DS...Xbox...PS3, etc.  And sales numbers are readily available...the Vita IS a flop.

The hardware is decent but they aren't going to get support from developers until more units have been sold.  Meanwhile, lack of good games (and price!) leaves consumers with no reason to buy.

This isn't rocket science, Sony.

deathblow3

@monson21502 @Xbox1SinceDay1 um no, its way stronger than the psp. i guess the ps4 is another version of the ps3 with more apps. or the x1 is a 360 with more apps. no games done on the vita can be done on the psp.

Xbox1SinceDay1
Xbox1SinceDay1

I agree. I think that the vita looks sexy as hell, but lack of launch games hurt the system massively. I have owned the original psp and a psp go. The only thing they really changed was a touch screen and a touch back. Which lets be honest, touch screen is for smart phone games not full fledged console games. Wasn't worth getting

@BestJinjo based on the crapy games I've seen so far, DriveClub, Knack......I'd say the PS4 is $300 overpriced ;)

@zeuanimals @Xbox1SinceDay1 As an apple fan, "retina display" is nice but way over rated by a lot of apple fans (they seem to think it's the best thing since sliced bread and anything without it is junk. It's not something I'd buy a display over).

The Vita display is honestly pretty nice and I don't see why it needs to be HD honestly. ONly reason I can think of is if they ever put TES or Fallout on it (ports, not ones made for mobile games) because the text may be so small it would need it to be readable and while I'd love to see that happen, I seriously doubt it would (trust me, I would be squeeling with glee if they did that. Even louder if they actually made a Fallout special for Vita. Hell, I'd be ecstatic if they put Fallout 1 and 2 on Vita or even smartphone honestly <- I think since those were more turn based and not reflex based you could get away with them on smartphone).

Xbox1SinceDay1
Xbox1SinceDay1

I hate windows phones, I also hate windows 8. Just because one thing is a fail doesn't mean everything is. I certainly don't praise all of what Microsoft does. All of what you said are assumptions.

The vita has never sold good at all. And those are facts, nothing fanboy about that. What is fanboy ism is you defending a dead unit that has proven itself to BE a bad sell.

Go google some actual facts kid. Till then what u say is irrelevant

@innocent69 @greenpolyp @Nintyfan95 I dont know why sony just wont cut the price of the memory sticks. When the PS3 came out it took a 800 dollar loss with each PS3. Though that information came from Sony.

@Xbox1SinceDay1 It is a nice device sadly just let down by software support meanwhile the 3ds is getting games like Castlevania mirror of fate, this game should be on vita where it can shine ffs.

If you are someone that imports games from Japan, then the Vita is worth owning. Right now the vita, in the US, is ending up how the PSP was like. There are no games being made for the PSP in the US, but in Japan the PSP is still very popular that even now Japanese publishers are releasing games for it.

@Xbox1SinceDay1 Windows phone is the best mobile OS out there by far are you kidding whats to hate please tell i have a lumia 920 and it pisses on the iphone and android counterparts i have had all, and the os is the smoothest and best experience overall..

@Xbox1SinceDay1 systems that are being made for sell are not dead just like the wii u isnt dead (yet) not saying either system will not die but can kids really go to there parents and go please get me this 300 system for bday or xmas? will they waste that over a console for almost the same price. no matter what you do to a hand held it not a phone or a tablet its a game system and they dont sell well for $300 or 200. 150-175 seems to be the sweet spot for handhelds. untill the vita hits the sweet spot it wont sell thus games wont be made.

tjkraz
tjkraz

@deathblow3 @demonkingx5 @zeuanimals Well, the PSP never really set the world on fire either.  If memory serves, the PSP has sold about 1/3 as many units as the DS/3DS.

Also it's hard to compare Vita's future to the 3DS because backward compatibility is so different.

Right out of the gate, the 3DS was compatible with 99.9% of all DS games available.  My kids upgraded from some earlier model DS to the 3DS, and that transition was very easy because all of their games were instantly compatible.

The Vita has very select support for PSP games and it ONLY supports digital versions.  Anyone with a drawer full of PSP UMDs ain't gonna be playing them on a Vita.

Vita also lacks any semblance of AAA gaming which can be found in droves on the DS/3DS.  Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, etc.  Uncharted and Little Big Planet are decent Vita games but in terms of franchise value and name recognition, they don't hold a candle to many DS titles.

Sony doesn't seem to know what to do with the Vita.  Rather than investing dollars in game development or advertising, they seem content to yield a high profit margin on the trickle of systems they continue to sell.

deathblow3
deathblow3

@demonkingx5 @zeuanimals it is failing not failed and it isnt dead yet just off to a slow start like the psp before it. and the 3ds once sony drops the price sells will pick up. no handheld sells well at 300 and no sells means no games.
