All-Pro Football 2K8 Special Abilities Spotlight

We take a look at all the special abilities in 2K Sports' upcoming football game.

Last week, we posted our first look at All-Pro Football 2K8, which you can check out here. One of the most interesting aspects of the game is how it organizes the more than 240 former NFL greats that constitute the game's stellar roster. All players are organized along three different skill tiers--gold, silver, and bronze; depending on that tier, each player has a number of special abilities that help further define what makes that player so special on the field. The following is a list of all the special abilities in the game and their description.

Now and forever, Chuck Muncie is our hero.

As you might expect from reading the list, several of these abilities, such as cadence, laser arm, or bulldozer, are tied to a player's specific position, such as quarterback or offensive line. That said, there is a lot of overlap of abilities along all the positions in the game so that multiple players can have the closing speed, loose ball magnet, or ball strip ability. In addition, several of the abilities, such as strength bonus, speed burner, or stamina bonus, are general bonuses that refer to a player's abilities compared to others at that position. For example, both Gale Sayers and Steve Young are speed burners, but you'll find Sayers to be a much quicker runner in the game than Young. The most intriguing abilities in the game are the ones that involve some sort of interactivity with the game, such as the signal stealer, which lets you try to steal your opponent's play by pressing the X button before the snap, or the big hit ability that allows you to pound ball carriers with the flick of the right stick.

We'll have more coverage of All-Pro Football 2K8 leading up to the game's release later this month.

YEP, many questions came into play when I heard about this game. At first I thought that 2k was going to make open ended football game that was fully customizable by they users. Its all theory buy it just makes since to me. One of two things happend with 2k5 after the NFL deal, 1. Die hard 2k5 fans started to make their own rosters for 2k5 which was downloadable at www.gamechewover.com ( this site roster first paragraph under the roster link starts like this Welcome to GameChewOver’s NFL 2K5 Edited Rosters) I was amazed to see that they had created rosters and even a section that helps with slider adjustments. 2. A program called FINNS EDITOR came into play. 3. A full update for 2k5 came out that added new camera angles to the game. With console game being in a RO only state I was wondering how they were getting code to update and change the game. I assumed 2k must have helped them and they took it from there( the consumers that is).

LMAO @ Fraser!!! I'm feelin' that!! GStatus, all of us that have actually played the organized version of the sport knows that college football & pro football are 2 separate monsters. Your feelings on NCAA 08 are kinda moot when it comes ti this discussion (BTW, congrats on being in that game!!! What team?) But, even when it comes to pro games, even you can't deny APF 2K8 its propers! Let's remove APF from the convo for a brief sec. Even you have to admit that NCAA is a far superior product than Madden. I can't think of a sport, where the college sport runs laps around the pro version. As an example, College Hoops 2k7 is nice; but, NOT better than NBA 2K7. If Madden can't outdo its little brother, what makes you think it'll be better than this (APF 2k8))?? It just won't be. Madden will do what it does. APF 2K8 will bring the heat, & turn up the competition in the pro field, & force EA to bring better product. CQ, you're right @ if the game was COMPLETELY customizable, where you could import the pro teams from online. Although, the likenesses would be very off, since they wouldn't be able to make it in the game.

WHY would people say madden looks better, what exactly looks better? Actor/model detail is pretty bold in 2k and it ties with the animation system quite superbly, not only does it look like football but each player are very closely detailed to their original self 8) !!! O and didnt they notice that some of the screens where either beta or SD video shots. Take a look at some of the video's in HD including the GAMESPOT.com interview. This games graphics are very far from lacking! (rain boucning of player models shoulders took me heck!)

estevie, I can roll w/ your statement, w/ the exception of Madden gainin' ground in the 07 game. Honestly, I have never heard so many Maddeneers grumble about any of them, like I heard for the 07 game. The largest complaint (outside of the gameplay), is that John & AL were entirely too repetitive. They bought it for both systems (360 & PS3), praying for a difference; but, it all came up the same. I can't say for certain, because after about 4 games, I never picked it back up. But, you're right: Madden WAS always king; & APF 2K8 is going to be a breath of fresh air.

Madden was always king; they had a slip on 06, regained some ground in 07, this year by bringing it back to basics is great. Not adding something crazy this year and focusing on depth and gameplay is better. But this game is a breathe of fresh air with something different.

can't wait for this breathe of fresh air, instead of Madden, i will be playing this fottball game this year

I can't wait for this game, especially taking your teams online. I wonder what 2K will do about adding more tilt to the season mode and more importantly, how to build upon the current game for next year seeing as half of the reason for getting Madden is a roster update. What will 2K do, add more legends, teams, etc?

Blakk is right NCAA is a must buy for me that and AP2K8.

Football Video game need this...Innovation, creativity and another choice. I'm looking forward to this game. and I hope it shows other developers locked out of NFL football that its about the game play and not such the players or the brand. Maybe Basketball and Baseball could do well without the major leagues involvement.

With so few abilities, makes me wonder if there'll be some guys with specific packages of skills that just make them hands-down better than the other guys in the same Tier.

Madden is kind of a joke guys...especially in terms of difficulty. In the first year of my franchise, I played all 16 games, went 16-0 on ALL MADDEN, never restarted, and as Matt Leinart threw 60 TDs, 12 ints, 5686 yards. The game is too easy and there are too many guaranteed passing plays or running plays.

Funny if this game do suck i just keep playing 2k5 just this weekend me and 6 of my friends played 2k5 till 6:00am it's still a great game.

Madden sux, case in point. For the guy who said Madden is better and he knows because he plays football. LOL - sure you do - bringing water is NOT playing football. Where's your trophies at homey? Anyway - there is this one animation in madden that has been there so long and is the most annoying thing to me - you know the tackle where you are breaking away from the field and a db bumps into (no arm wrap no nothing) and you go down like you've been hit by a freight train? Even when I played and spearing was legal, I never seen any one go down from someone just bumping into them - weeeeeaaaaakkk 2K rules this hen house boys, in case you ain't up on it - it' been better then madden since 1999 - and I can prove it. So excuse me as I buy 2 copies of the hottest football game to be released since 2004

& Why is it that folks wanna keep throwin' NCAA 08 in the mix? Yes, it's a great game; but, Madden isn't. They share the same graphics (give or take), but definitely NOT the same GAME ENGINE. If Madden were to use the same game engine as NCAA, Madden would be a MUCH BETTER game! If EA didn't purchase the exclusive rights to the NCAA football franchise early, I believe they'd get some solid competition in that as well. But, it amazes me how EA really throws muscle behind the college game; but, the pro game is mediocre horse fodder! LOL

Hmmmmm . . . 7/16/07 is right around the corner. At this point, I'm ready for the game to start speakin' for itself. As far as Madden goes, no matter how many seasons you can play in franchise mode, it hasn't been worth playing more that 1 season, over the past 4 years. Any REAL Madden players know the quirks to completing a flawless season (thanks to money plays, the same set of Madden football flaws, & the overall arcade feel of that game). I've played football (WR/FS), & Madden does NOT feel natural to me. It's amazing how the league brand makes an impression on how people feel about the SPORT. It's amazing that the 'Maddenites' weren't singing this "elite" song when Madden 05 went head up against NFL 2K5. They bowed down. No matter. Madden saw the last of my money in 2005 for the 06 game (Madden 07 was given to me, & I still have yet to desire to complete the season that I started). APF 2K8 WILL speak up starting 7/16/07. Madden fanboys/franchise chasers/status quo, continue to follow your norms. My money will be spent w/ VC/Sega.

these special abilitiues are sweet. they make the legends better than the regular players just like how it should be. Also it adds strategy so if you want a passing offense you can have a pass block offensive line and good recievers
