Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U canceled

[UPDATE] Sega confirms Nintendo version of first-person shooter no longer in development; "business-as- usual" at developer Demiurge.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a representative for Demiurge Studios provided a statement saying it is "business-as-usual" at the company following the cancellation of Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U. The statement comes from Demiurge CEO and cofounder Albert Reed.

"We were very sorry to hear about the cancellation of Aliens for Wii U. It's business-as-usual here at Demiurge Studios. We are focused on making Shoot Many Robots for mobile kick ass and we've got another unannounced game in the works that we can't wait to unveil!"

The original story follows below

The Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines--said to be the best-looking version of all--has been canceled. It was originally expected to launch by the end of March.

"Sega can confirm that the Wii U sku of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development," Sega told GameSpot today.

No rationale for the cancellation was provided, though the game's fate had long been in question.

It is not clear when exactly Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U was canceled or if the move will result in layoffs at Cambridge, Mass. developer Demiurge Studios. A representative from the studio was not immediately available to comment.

Prior to today, Sega had three times refused to provide a status update on the project following the critically panned launch of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC version in February.

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford said last month that he was unsure if Aliens: Colonial Marines for Wii U will ship at all. "We'll see," Pitchford said at the time.

"That's not our call. I think [developer Demiurge Studios] did amazing work," he went on. "I think it's really cool, but Sega's got to figure that out. We're doing the best we can."

Obviously Sega has realized Wii gamers have been forewarned and wont pony up the dough. the pain, the pain.

They should've used the voice actors from the original Resident Evil for this game. That way it would have fallen into the "so bad its good" category and attained cult status :P

Oh no. Wii U won't be privy to probably one of the worst releases of 2013. I feel deprived.

Good Riddance!  Let this be a lesson to all AAA developers. When focusing on one game with an extended dev cycle, let that be the ONLY game you are working on.

Seems like the Wii U has lost a lot of the third party support that was promised for it. In terms of colonial marines and what everyone says about it, I guess Wii U gamers are not missing much.

Well on the Wii U, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 will make up for such a disappointment, if you want the best. Can't think of other games as replacement but that's all really. Consider that an open question on what game makes up for this cancellation. I currently own a Wii at the moment so Call of Duty Black Ops sort of make perfect sense if I could hold my tension.

They saved a lot of people for buying this trash. The game was a complete disappointment.

and on the specific, how about releasing some original games ? Maybe even Wii U owners already played all the original games on other consoles. Hardly surprising if one considers thar many Wii owners also had a second system. Wake up Nintendo, where's your games ?

The more I think about it the more it feels they rushed out the system to be in front of the other two without having any original game in mind. i hope the catch up but they have really sat on their laurels at Ninty !

Why would anyone wish for the Nintendo WiiU to fail is baffling. It's not as if your Sony or Microsoft machine are threatened by it, don't you love videogames ? You don't want to see anymore Mario games, Mario kart games etc ? I currently do not own a Wii U but as soon as a good number of games I want to play surfaces I will get on as I really like the controller. I must admit they could have pushed the envelope a little bit in terms of graphics but they must have done their maths. Either way I wouldn't wish on Nintendo, Sony or MS to fail as competition is good for us, the consumers.

Wow who would have thunk it...oh ya everyone saw this coming lol Can gamespot stop reporting this story now? Was any Wii U owner clamoring for THIS game? It's pretty much been slammed as being a crappy game or at best mediocre game and the wii u still has a rather low user base in comparison to the still relevant 360/ps3/PC. It really makes sense from the devs point of view since the making the port would have been the equivalent of flushing money down a toilet ;p The wii U ONLY owners really aren't missing much either.

I will admit the multi player had it's charms.

Now Wii U owners will never experience the brilliance that is Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Makes sense no matter the point of view. It's a game with really low review scores and a lot of hate, on a console with a relatively low fanbase. It has red numbers written all around it.

Even if the game did suck the WiiU needs to have 3rd party titles coming out for it if the vast majority of gamers were going to buy the system.  I hate to say it but if it takes another few months for anything worthwhile to launch on the system it's going to be a complete write off for most of us.

@Depresso I can't speak for everyone here, but I have no desire for Nintendo to fail... I owe my interest in gaming to the NES and  have owned everything they've released up to now. Currently though, the Wii-U just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The moment they can give me a compelling reason to buy one, I will. But they haven't managed it yet... and it's looking increasingly less likely that they will manage it at all.

BlueYonderBoy

@Wolflink001 If you were holding out for the Wii U version hoping that it would measure up to the preview footage... then I can empathise...

But don't feel too bad, if you have an Xbox or PS3 you will probably be able to pick up those versions for under $15 soon... If you are still curious...

@harndoogle The sad thing is, I bet that a game called Alien Colon Marines would be more entertaining to play than the game that ended up getting made.  What would that entail anyway?  Giving colonoscopies to Xenomorphs?

@boredom_kills @Depresso I'm a PC gamer and I surely don't want N to fail. I hope they can make a comeback. Everyone benefits from a strong gamer market. However, they are in a heap of trouble. They want to do their own thing and are paying the price. The days of exclusivity are over. To survive you have to be in a cross-platform, universal, co-operative mode. The other 2 systems are going PC architecture. That's the future. Combined effort. Make it easy for devs to Port.

RhythmAndBlues

@boredom_kills @Depresso I don't want the WiiU to fail. I just think that, if it does, it will be because it deserved to fail.

I bought mine bundled with ZombiU, and picked-up New Super Mario Bros. U at the same time. ZombiU was good in parts, but I finished it out of a sense of obligation rather than enjoyment (the Arena stage made me wanna fuckin' kill myself). And NSMBU is just... sort of... quite good, but... well... not dazzling. And it should be. It's a Mario game, for Christ's sake.

Another thing that's really getting on my tits is the absolute *eternity* that Nintendo are taking to launch the new Virtual Console. If I could play Super Mario Kart with my Pro Controller, I'd be feeling much better about the world right now...

boredom_kills
boredom_kills

@AlexFili @boredom_kills I know three people who bought a Wii-U. Of them, two have already traded it in. Why? Lack of games, and promised games being delayed/cancelled/losing exclusivity. It really doesn't bode well.

RhythmAndBlues

@Megamandrew I pictured a Fantastic Voyage / Inner Space kinda thing, in which miniaturised space marines get pumped up someone's arse.

Maybe that says more about me than anything else.

RhythmAndBlues
RhythmAndBlues

@GSGuy321 Agreed. Though, I suppose, by being so different in terms of architecture, interface and titles the U at least singles itself out as a contender for someone's 'second console'. If the next Xbox and PS4 are as similar as people expect, there won't be much sense in owning both of them...

... I know, I know. I'm clutching at straws. I am essentially admitting that the Wii U doesn't have the stones to be a premier console - it's strictly sloppy seconds. But simply being 'something different' might actually stand it in good stead in the long run. *If* a handful of top-quality titles ever gets released for it, that is.

RhythmAndBlues
RhythmAndBlues

@GSGuy321 @boredom_kills @AlexFili And, pretty soon, the new machines from Sony and Microsoft will be released and steal what little thunder it has had.

The Wii U needs a killer app, and quickly. And for the love of God, Nintendo, please launch the Virtual Console. Properly, I mean. Releasing one game per month isn"t making *anybody* happy...
