Alice: Madness Returns includes original Alice

American McGee confirms action puzzler will include free download for first Lewis Carroll adaptation on 360, PS3.

By the time EA and Spicy Horse release Alice: Madness Returns for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC later this year, it'll have been well over a decade since its predecessor arrived for the PC. However, gamers looking to refresh their memory of American McGee's Alice won't have to root through their archives.

American McGee's Alice can be found in this rabbit hole.

Speaking to CVG today, American McGee said that those who purchase Alice: Madness Returns on consoles will receive a free download for the original game, which was released for the PC in 2000.

"There's also going to be [a] pretty significant release, which is the original Alice brought over to the consoles so that a person who's purchased Madness Returns gets a download code and is able to bring Alice 1 onto their console and play through the entire original game alongside playing Madness Returns," McGee said.

It was unclear if PC gamers will also be afforded a free copy of American McGee's Alice or when the original game will be available. EA declined to comment on the matter.

McGee also addressed Alice: Madness Returns' downloadable content strategy, saying gamers will be able to purchase a wardrobe for its titular character. "There will be DLC in the form of dresses that the player can download and Alice can wear," he said. "Those dresses come with special abilities and enhance how you play through the game."

An explicitly twisted riff of Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Alice: Madness Returns sees a grown-up version of the titular heroine grappling with insanity. Her journeys take her back to Wonderland, where players will find combat, platforming, and puzzle challenges.

For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

[UPDATE] EA confirmed today that those who purchase a new copy of Alice: Madness Returns will receive a one-time-use code redeemable for a free copy of American McGee's Alice on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Those who pick up the game secondhand will be able to purchase American McGee's Alice for $10 (800 Microsoft points). The publisher indicated that the original Alice will not be sold separately.

@Neolostars it's Shanoa from Castlevania order of ecclasia @koospetoors looks like they are releasing it for pc as well, for a cheaper price. but if a game becomes hard to get ahold of, you can hardly blame someone for pirating it. I pirated Fatal Frame 3 for that reason. On a side note, i actually paid for Alice. @vicsrealms looks like you lucked out, since its coming out for PC now too. which is good news for me, depending on which system i decide to buy it on. i have a 360, ps3 and a PC. I also work for xbox, but that doesn't normally influence what system i buy for. I have no idea which system i want to get it for, but for the sake of better graphics (occasionally) im thinking about doing ps3

I can't wait for this game and totally awesome they include the first game which I didn't complete.

In my opinion including the original game in the retail package for PC will actually boost sales. Why? Because most of the buyers, who don't own the original title and are uncertain about the quality of the 2nd title, will actually buy it for the 1st title. Not including the 1st title will result in lower sales and some of the people will either wait for price drops or simply pirate it.

That DLC sounds a lot like what Dead Space had which was power weapons but no new game play or needed content

Although what they're doing is total BS!!, I'll still get it cause I loved the first(pc user by the way). I still play the first, in fact was in it just a couple of weeks ago. As for ladiesman17 yes you can make it widescreen. I'm playing mine at 1920 x 1080 and it looks and runs great. You just have to go into the game setting while the game isn't running and tweak a couple of things. To long to write so here's the address that will tell you what to do. http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/Essential_Games_List. It will tell you everything you need to know for this game and others.

"Declined to comment on the matter" probably means that McGee wants to give us a free copy, but EA don't. Let's see who'll win...

For the ones thinking the first Alice will be given for free: "There will be DLC in the form of dresses that the player can download and Alice can wear". Nothing in this World is for free. "It was unclear if PC gamers will also be afforded a free copy of American McGee's Alice or when the original game will be available. EA declined to comment on the matter." Let me smooth things for you, EA: If you don't re-release the first one as you'll do for consoles, no problem, there will be always the torrent comunity; and no, it's not a threat: it's a fact, because you would be practically begging for that to happen.

I was kinda worried about not being able to play to original, but all worries are gone now. Good Job!

@Squeezitgirdle As, I have already said in my first post. I haven't played it. The idea of pirating it isn't appealing at all, and you can't get the game anymore without pirating it. So, or those of us who are primarily PC gamers (360 console broke down and I refuse to purchase another, since it was used very little to begin with) and haven't enjoyed the first one, it would seem appropriate for EA to offer a free copy for the PC as well as the 360 and PS3. It would be a great way to hook those of us who haven't play it. Of course, its probably one of those games I will wait for a nice Steam sale to buy it. Unless, they give me a good reason to pre-order it.

I'll start by first giving the obligatory middle finger to their "downloadable content strategy."With that taken care of, I can happily say I'm looking forward to playing the original Alice for free. I never got to play it the first time around and it'll be nice to know that I can download it and give it a play through before I move onto the sequel.

"It was unclear if PC gamers will also be afforded a free copy of American McGee's Alice or when the original game will be available. EA declined to comment on the matter." Let me do a wild guess with so much love from industry to us PC gamers the answer is NO!

@koospetoors I think that it's their way to call the attention of Console Gamers whom hadn't had a chance to play the first game or maybe they wanna sell more console versions.... anyway... you're right PC gamers shouldn't be left out

Great news. I've got to say, I actually thought of this very idea, due to the fact that I had never played the original, and as a console gamer, I doubt I'd have picked it up even if I did end up enjoying this one. However, I knew that was my greedy and illogical side talking, and it would never happen. I mean, some companies wouldn't take the effort emulate older console games, not to mention taking the effort to port a computer game to consoles (which means they would have to put effort into the controls, making sure it worked well). And for free? Pfft. Like any company would do that with a game. If anything, they'd put it on XBLA/PSN so we'd have to pay for it. No, it would never happen, so I quickly gave up that fantasy. So it comes a genuine surprise to see that my wild fantasy has actually come true. And I've got to say, even if the game itself doesn't turn out as well as I think it will be (and I really do think it looks like a great game), EA and the people behind the game have at least earned my respect for how generous they're being with this. :D

How on earth have I never known of such a twisted, mental game? Mind you - PC game, year 2000, that's probably why... it was 2004-5 before I cobbled together my first gaming PC. These games sound like a riot, will have to give them a try.

"As much as I like the first game and despite how I eagerly anticipate the sequel, EA had yet to give me a solid reason to consider playing this game." Wouldn't the fact that you liked the first game and that you're eagerly anticipating the sequel be a solid reason to consider playing the game? I mean, I'm just saying.

I don't see why they wouldn't do this on the PC, heck it would probably be easier to convert it to run under Windows 7, assuming it doesn't already, then it would be to get it to run on the PS3 and 360.

koospetoors

@squeezitgirdle So what you're basically saying is that us PC gamers should instead resort to piracy if we want to get Alice 1 again? Riiight.... Anyways, I really hope they release it for PC too, would be quite a smack in the face for those old PC fans who want to LEGALLY (looking at you squeezezitgirdle) get it again.

very nice of them, I only ever played the demo for the original Alice game on PC before it was released, it seemed alright. Don't know how well it'll look nowadays, though it was done in the quake 3 engine if my memory serves correctly..

I'm hoping they will include an extra disc in the retail package for PC. I don't care if this will be considered a limited, collector's etc edition as long as they include the first title.

Neat :) one game from the PC which won't be watered down on consoles.(as its requirements aren't demanding) I'm glad this little gem is coming to the PS3/360 so everyone who's not played it can give it a go.

@ vicsrealms while i sympathize with the way you see it, I'm going to have to disagree. The pc version has been out for 10 years. While console gamers never got it. On the other hand, they're not stupid either, I'm sure they know well that the original version of Alice is EVERYWHERE for free (pirated versions, but nonetheless they all work just fine)------ ORIGINAL POST vicsrealms Posted Apr 19, 2011 6:18 am GMT As interesting as the game sounds (I have never played the first one), if they aren't going to offer a free copy of the first one to PC gamers (while console gamers get it), I am just going to ignore the game.

How awesome is that to release the decade old original game with the new one especially when getting the old one is a little bit harder now. I was kinda following this game 'cuz it looked interesting and the only turn off for me was the fact that I didn't play the original, guess thats sorted out for me now. Other developers in similar situations should follow suit.
