Alan Wake returns in American Nightmare

Remedy crafting new survival horror action adventure seeing titular writer face off against Mr. Scratch.

by

Alan Wake may not have been Microsoft's best-selling Xbox 360 exclusive, but the Remedy-developed survival horror action adventure will be returning. That fact was confirmed at the Spike TV Video Game Awards tonight, with the announcement of Alan Wake: American Nightmare.

Alan Wake as a paranormal psycho killer? Superb. Alan Wake as a novelist? Not so much.

Titular hero Alan Wake is again the star of the show as the writer journeys to another remote town. According to the trailer, Wake is facing off against a new supernatural villain, Mr. Scratch. The two do battle using the powers of light (for Wake) and darkness (for Scratch).

The trailer did not indicate when Alan Wake: American Dream will see release, nor on which platforms. However, the title had previously been pegged as an Xbox Live Arcade release.

Stay tuned to GameSpot for more from tonight's VGAs.

@20years Easy there buddy, I in no way meant FPS multiplayer. Hide and go seek multiplayer with flashlights however would be pretty awesome. Get a grip and stop jumping to conclusions

@Pr0ving4Gr0undz Yea pretty much i am and there is no need for sarcasm since i am not saying something bad for either the game or the Xbox fanboyz. All i am saying is that it sucks that i don;t get to play such a wonderful game like Alan Wake or DoA or similar title!Vise Versa it sucks that Xbox users cannot play games like MGS or God Of War..Plainly the whole "only on" system sucks in my opinion cause while it is true that it gives uniqueness and diversity to each console it also take away the pleasure of enjoying wonderful games on the market for those who don;t pick the Particular Console! That's all i was meaning GEE! You ppl don't have to downvote me to oblivion for that!

@Nolakk i believe Alan Wake IP is belong to Remedy Games unlike Max Payne. I m not really sure who holds the plug, since remedy keep on insisting there will possibly a future release of Alan wake on PC. Anyway i hardly doubt the sales will be more than 50k for the PC once it hit the selves and the fact that is a purely singleplayer game and releasing it on the PC is a disaster.

Really looking forward to this one! Loved the first AW, can't wait to play another - the automatic pistol looks fun...

Can people shut up already with the "release it for PC or PS3 please". Its an exclusive Xbox360 game, it won't happen, get over it. Do we see (rational) people asking for The last of Us or Uncharted or God of War to be released on Xbox360 or PC? No, because it won't happen. Do we see (rational) people asking for Marios or Zeldas to be released on PS3 or Xbox360? No, because it won't happen. Just face the fact that Gears of war 3, Alan Wakes, Halos... are Xbox360 exclusives. If you want to play them go buy an Xbox360 or shut up.

Dang this looks awesome, has a great sounding plot too.

PS3 gamers would have eaten this series up. Not to mention it would have looked sooo much better with a SDK from Sony to help Remedy.

@projectpat72988 woops, i forgotten to mention that AW "night springs' would be episodial releasing some time dec 2011. Its rumored to have season pass Similar to gears of war 3. Pricing is still underway. MS and Remedy have not concluded about it yet. * Rumor sometime ago in forums.xbox.com - 1200msp for 2 episodes of Alan wake: night springs each would have the length of the free dlcs provided in retail disc. "American nightmare" episodes would be continuation from AW "night springs" set to be released on 2012.

@DrKill09 If you dont like the console thats fine, but thats no reason to spread your hate around the site...your just annoying everyone and sparking up the stupid, pathetic and immature fanboy wars.

People are still hoping for MS PC releases?! I do too. But let's be reminded that the last big PC release from MS was the now 4 years old Gears of War (Fable 3 doesn't count IMO). MS realized long ago that releasing their games on PC, normally with better graphics and some extra content, can hurt their console sales. Personally, I'm ready to take on the worst DRM scheme to play games like Gear 3 and Halo: Reach on PC without complaining, for example, about the lack of extra content or the lack of advanced graphical options. But MS just wouldn't listen.

once again PC and PS3 users (me included) have to suck up the fact that games like Alan Wake or Fable 2 or HELL DOA 3 , 4 (which were even ps titles originally!!!) will never arrive to us! Thank you so much Microsoft idd...(about the Fable and Alan Wake titles at least)

shalashaska88

And so this confirms that we PC gamers will never get the game that was promised for us back then. You win Microsoft, you win.

Yes, lets COMPLETELY destroy another good unique single player experience to incorporate a multiplayer that doesn't make any sense to add begin with in the name of popularity. I HATE people like that I really do. Lets willingly play crapier games because they feature multiplayer. Let Alan Wake crash and burn and die before they put multiplayer in it and completely ruin what the game is about.

I'm pumped for this, Alan Wake rules. Odd that the Duke Nukem Forever DLC hitting Tuesday, The Doctor Who Cloned Me, isn't listed on Gamespot.

I'd buy this if it was on PC/PS3. I've even considered getting a 360 for Alan Wake.

Best trailer of the night. Between this and Last of Us, 360 and PS3 fans have something to be excited about. (Then again, the ME3 trailer gave both something to be worried about.)

VilandasUK

no no no, don't even start with the multiplayer, Alan Wake doesn't need it, God of war doesn't need it, no games that are created for single player from the start should need a multiplayer. No need to F&£$ up good games with multiplayer.

@sleepnsurf damn straight @DrKill09 there was a probability that would i agree with you (about 0.1 %) . but then i understood that you have eventually given Duke Nukem Forever an 8.5 and Kane and Lynch : Dead Men a 9.0 . so you can guess what happened to that probability now .... as they say , obvious hater is obvious

As much as I loved the first one the combat got really boring about half way in. I kept playing for the story but I don't feel I could play another game that plays exactly the same.

They would be smart to incorporate multiplayer. That would definitely attract more people.

@y3ivan There has been no pricing information yet so idk where you are getting that from. Its well over a year and a half since Alan Wake 1, so theres no way in hell that when this could be a full two year wait or more would only be a tiny 1200MS game. If it is, then its a tactic and they plan to release a full game close behind it. no WAY would we have to wait this long for 1200MS two hour tops game.

y3ivan
y3ivan

@Vraeth should be less than 2gb since its 1200msp. gameplay hours might be 2-3hrs since its a standalone.

I hope it's not a big DLC release; I was one of those idiots who bought the 360 xbox with the 20 GB (read: 11 GB in actuality) HDD back in the day, and had to replace my RRoD'd box with an Arcade, so I'm still using said HDD.

Now thats really clever, again, light vs darkness! cant they hire a decent writer once in a while?

@Darth_Slayer Fanboyism? Where? I have pc and ps3 along with a ton of Nintendo and Sega consoles over the years, and the original XBox. You know, the one that ACTUALLY WORKED. I pay $400 for something, it should WORK. Times my PS3 died in the 4 years I've had it? ZERO. Times my $250 surround sound system has died since I bought it in 06? ZERO Times my 60" DLP TV has died in the year I've had it? ZERO Times my PC has died in the five years I've had it? ZERO Times my 360 died within the three years I had it? Three. See the problem? Or maybe you LIKE coming home from work, wanting to play some games to blow off steam, and your console refuses to start?

@xdude85 "Great news, Alan Wake had one of the best settings and plot I've ever seen in a game." You obviously haven't played Silent Hill 2. They basically have the same plot. Spoilers: In Silent Hill 2, a writer is looking for his wife, and the ending depends on what you do...the ones with his wife being dead is more accepted. In Alan Wake, a writer is looking for his wife, and the ending is kind of confusing but it's very similar to one of the SH2's endings...it looked to me his wife was dead. There's nothing original about Alan Wake's plot.
