AirForce Delta Strike Impressions

Konami is prepping another new installment in its jet combat series for an early 2004 release.

Konami's AirForce Delta series got its start back on the Dreamcast, and it quickly made its mark as a decent air combat series. The new game in the series, AirForce Delta Strike, marks the first time the series has come to the PlayStation 2. And it's bringing more than 130 planes and interplanetary combat along with it.

Strike will mark the first time in the series that the game has tried to tell a cohesive, character-driven story, told via anime-style still drawings of the game's characters. The game will feature six playable pilots, each with his or her own unique flying abilities and a different take on the game's plot, which focuses on two warring factions battling for control of the planet Earth. As one of Earth's defenders, you'll embark on more than 60 different missions, ranging from the standard air combat-style missions of defending, attack runs, and the like, to some slightly more unique fare, such as driving the alien invaders back to their base on another planet and hitting them where they live. The mission we were shown had you flying to protect a train from incoming attackers as well as stationary turrets, but Konami claims that the team is working to develop a great deal of mission variety in the game.

Also speaking to the team's pledge of variety is the plane count. There will be more than 130 different planes in the game, going as far back as propeller-driven World War II fighters. More than 60 of the planes will be licensed. To handle space travel, the game will also feature some more experimental craft, including some that can stop completely and just hover in the air. And as a nice little bonus, Konami's most famous starfighter, the Vic Viper, will appear as a selectable craft.

AirForce Delta Strike is currently scheduled to hit North America in early February. Stay tuned for more details as they surface.
