Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 finally arrived in stores yesterday, giving gamers everywhere a chance to "finish the fight." And just in case their taste for combat isn't quite sated, the US Air Force wants to offer them another fight.

With the Halo 3 launch hype in full swing yesterday, The New Hampshire Union Leader reported on the efforts of a local group of Air Force recruiters to capitalize on the occasion. The Air Force cosponsored a Halo 2 tournament at an area GameStop store, with the winner set to receive a copy of the third game in the series.

However, that tournament was postponed by a GameStop district manager because gamers under the age of 18 had signed up to compete on the game, which is rated M for Mature (17 and older). But whereas GameStop sent eager minors away disappointed, the US Air Force stepped in to help them get their Halo fix.

The recruiters set up a party area in a nearby strip-mall parking lot, where the Union Leader reported that they could scarf down pizza, choke down Mountain Dew, and play Halo 2 on a TV "from the back of a pimped-out military SUV." According to the article, a 13-year-old gamer and three of his fellow eighth-grade classmates were there playing the game, which they'd been anticipating since Halo 2 came out in 2004, when they would have been 10.

"We expect a big showing," recruiter Staff Sgt. Christopher Johnson was quoted as saying. "We have the same demographic as they do... Our target market is identical to that of video game stores."

The approach has proven successful in the past. Johnson told the paper that a similar party for last month's release of Madden NFL 08 led to two new recruits signing up. Johnson said he has yet to hear anyone object to such military recruitment efforts targeted at adolescent gamers.

I mean, the fact that you try THAT hard to find a way to justify that our tax dollars paying to keep Americans healthy as wrong, just shows how stupid you are. Heck, "long lines and lower quality"... I have never heard more by-the-book Republican-Faux News propaganda. I don't want to turn this forum into a political debate, because I don't want to stoop to your level, but you have no right to come in here and call this guy stupid. How do you like it? Somehow you justify your tax dollar should be spent building missile defense systems in Europe to protect Great Britain and France from the Middle East, yet government spending for healthcare in America is bad? Go home. And please don't EVER vote again.

JohnMetcalf, if that guy is a left wing ninny, you are his right wing equivalent. "Long lines and poor health care quality". You watch to much Faux News. Whats next, you're going to rant about bureaucrats, big government, and 'the far left'. You're both wrong. Thats the bottom line.

dickieg "The American government should focus less on killing other countries and more on saving the lives of their citizens. They need and should be able to have free health care." What a left wing Ninny. WHY DO YOU THINK WE ARE OVER IN IRAQ IN THE FIRST PLACE? We are there to keep people like you safe or have you forgotten WHAT HAPPENED ON 9-11, I THINK YOU HAVE. By the way the only reason you want free health care is probably because you are too lazy to go out and get a real job. If we have free health care then we will be like Canada and England. There will be long lines and the quality of care will go down becasue doctors won't be able to do your job. Do yo want the govenment to be the one who approves a MRI for you if needed. Chances are they wont because they are very expensive. You need to get a dose of the real world and get out of Mommy and Daddy's basement. How STUPID can you get.

The military recruiters here in Utah are no different from those from in New Hampshire. They try anything to get someone to join and don't worry they are probably being yelled at as we speak.

I don't see any problem with the Air Force using Halo, the Air force isn't nearly as tough (physically at least) as per say the Marines so if that gets them to join let em, they have a much smaller chance of being injured.

dickieg

What's the big deal. It's just to get you there so they can convince you to join. If you are so stupid that you think REAL WAR is the same as HALO than you got bigger problems than the recruiter. The American government should focus less on killing other countries and more on saving the lives of their citizens. They need and should be able to have free health care.

I agree with dyne2128. I was mostly angry with one comment early on in the post. I am a proud member of the Air National Guard and I have reaped the bennefits. Let's see I recieved some college credit toward my computer science degree. A $2000.00 enlistment bonus when I first signed up a $15000.00 bonus when I signed up the second time and my GI Bill as well $275.00 a month and since my second enlistment if I chose to go back I would get an additional $300.00 month added as a kicker. The Air Force has treated me well and it kills me to hear people who don't know what they are talking about bash the military or my country.

Also, as much as I scrutinized him in my previous post, I certainly don't have a problem with Staff Sgt Johnson's use of Madden to talk to kids, but of course.....that's a tad more age-appropriate. But nevertheless, get the parents involved, and get their feedback as well. Anytime a recruiter talks to kids under the age of 18, the parents should always be a part of the decision making process. Now, if you're ready for my rant, here I go. The part that bugs me is that we as a nation only get patriotic when things like 9/11 happen, and people for some sorry a$$ reason want to just end the war because there are casualties. Ladies and Gentlemen.....war is hell, and men and women will die, that's the nature of war. Whether you like it or not, we are going to fight the war on terror. The question remains.......would you rather fight them in their back yard.....or in our backyards? Tell our Commander-in-chief to allow diabetics to serve, (I found out I had it a year-and-a-half after I discharged while trying to re-enlist), and I'll gladly go back over and give em' h3ll. Ahhh...the beauty of 14-inch guns blasting away at people who turned 2 civilian aircraft into guided missiles that killed over 4000 innocent civilians on 9/11......

First off, the military doesn't condone using tactics like this to recruit new enlistees. This is a case of a few boneheads making an extremely poor choice in the way they approach "the demographic". The real tragedy here is that the article is titled in such a way that many people that see the headline think that the entire Air Force is using this tactic to "sucker" young kids into wanting to join up. Yes.....these douches represent the US Armed Forces Recruiting Division in a very pathetic way, and if I were their CO, I'd have them doing KP for the next few months with a suspended bust in pay down a paygrade or two. Doing this is just plain wrong, and angers the living h3ll out of me. I'm a proud Navy vet from the era of the first Gulf War, and I can honestly say that there are many Armed Forces recruiters that do a fantastic job talking to kids at their high schools on career day, talking to parents that are looking for a way to put their kids through school to further their education, (The Montgomery GI Bill gave me $900/month to go to college), and denouncing the "Hollywood myths" when kids visit the recruiting stations wanting to join because "I saw the film Navy Seals and it just looks so cool!"......no kids, if you want to join the military and get the "real world" take on what it can be like, go visit your local VFW and talk to the men and women who were really there. There's no Hollywood in any of their stories. Or talk to a few Marines that just came back from Iraq who's Humvee ran over a roadside bomb.....these men and women will give you the God's honest truth about what war is like. There's no "reset" button on the front lines. Recruiters for the most part do a very good and honest job educating young people and their parents on the benefits of what military service can offer. I have plaques, service awards, letters of commendation, and letters of appreciation decorating the walls of my home and I'm proud of every one of them. But I didn't fall for crap like these idiots tried to pull. The recruiters that I visited were extremely professional and very honest and I will always be thankful for that. Personally, I'd make an example out of this local recruiting station and just like klip_twings said..... it really is sick and wrong. I may not agree with a lot of what people say about our current status in Iraq, and I have a different take on a lot of military issues, but I'm a vet...so I'm a little biased. But, in this case......let's see how Staff Sgt Christopher Johnson would feel about losing 1/2 his pay for 6 months and spending a few months in the brig. Actions like his are not "Bravo Zulu".

Why don't you pack your crap and leave you left wing liberal nut jobs. If you have such problems then you don't deserve to live in a country like the US. If we weren't over in Iraq there is not telling how many more times we would have been attacked since 9-11. As a matter of fact you probably think 9-11 was our fault alot of you liberal do-dos do. While you sit on your fat butt every day it's people like us active duty and national guard alike that keep you safe and free. You've been drinking too much of that democrat Kool-aid to see the good that we are doing over there.

this is not different to all the other ways the army try to get recruits, there is usually an ad on gamespot to join the army, RAF or navy. its not nice that people are doing this. but it is stilll the persons choice, and if they did not do this what would happen? there would be no armys to help with the terrorist attacks England and America are getting. and no one to help give aid to those involved in a crisis such as earthquakes. its not all guns and bombs the army is used for loads of things and without them we would be in a dire situation. so I dont really know what to make of this. its not great but I can see the motives that made this happen.

@ Kelemhuma : Ya man, peace. If two people can't agree to disagree, we've got bigger problems than inflation to deal with in this country. But this thread IS getting ugly! I think we should all call a truce. Now if you will exuse me, I got my Xbox back from the shop last night and I have a fight to finish. I suggest you all do the same. Unless of course you're under 17, then you have a Pinata to finsh, or possibly a Hello Kitty Adventure Island to finsh. Although, you COULD just have your mom hold your hand while you finish the fight and tuck you in at night afterwords to make sure you don't have any Covenant related nightmares. Ah the innocence of youth!

klip_twings I totally agree this is really not cool. I love HALO, but to us the game a a tool to put kids in Killing fields goes past immoral. This to me is like saying "Hey games are cool but isn't killing in real life better!! I mean hey kids people die all the time why not help out you would be helping wealth pigs take over another country for profit. People are just like aliens so why not just kill anyone you see it on the game. We will even pay you and teach you how!!! Would that be great kids? just sign your souls on the dotted line!!" Where on earth do you see morality in this whole thing. The militarizes job is to protect and killing should always be a last result. I am finding American Military kind of despicable at this second. Which hurts even worse being an American and a patriot!

Hey DMalthus so I forgot Noriagas first name big deal. Everything I said was true here is brief history lesson on where we sold weapons to Iran as well as Iraq. Dont tell me I dont know what im talking about. "...Back in the Reagan administration, a scheme was hatched to illegally sell weapons to Iran, which was in a long bloody war with none other than Iraq. Proceeds from the sales of weapons were then diverted to the Contras, the US-backed gang of thugs who were fighting to topple the democratically-elected Sandinista government of Nicaragua. Independent Prosecutor Lawrence Walsh indicted several administration officials. Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs Elliott Abrams pleaded guilty to withholding information from Congress. He was pardoned by President George H. W. Bush in 1992 and has now been appointed by President George W. Bush to the National Security Council.... Poindexter was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of Congress and two counts of making false statements. Poindexter later surfaced under Bush II as the official in charge of the Defense Department's fascist Total Information Awareness scheme. Though Walsh found that it was likely that President Ronald Reagan, Vice-President George H.W. Bush and Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger knew entirely what was going on Bush I's lame-duck, pre-emptive pardon of Weinberger's perjury charge before he ever was tried, prevented the entire story from coming out. The story of the overthrow of an elected government and any attempt to mete out justice for the Nicaraguans was shunted aside. And, the probe never got higher than the operatives convicted and pardoned. Listen to the BBC for news instead of being spoon fed your current events by FOX. Watch the history channel once in while or better yet pick up a book before you speak. As far as Blackhawk 101 goes. You were nice in your last reply so I will not be defensive What you say about a regular bank loaning money may be true. But as far as federal reserve goes. I can not posibbly see how not having gold back our money would be a good idea. Every dollar printed causes a deficit which people have to pay back. So they do make money not lose it like normal bank. becuse we are paying off the intrest. If we still had gold backing our money we would not have that problem. And let me say this we can talk and debate for days about this for days. But I dont feel like it peace and chicken grease man. I am going to go play Halo 3 lol. Thats what originaly sparked my intrest in this thread. I just dont like to hear about kids dieing for any cause let alone a bad one.

I realize that some of you are going to hate me even before I type this. I think that every person should do 2 years military service, as long as they can choose their service. Just bear with me here. I've been in the Air Force for about 5 years now and I love it. Since I've joined, I've been to many places in the world, including Iraq. I'm now currently stationed in South Korea and I love it here. My Korean coworkers have told me that all males have to do 2 years military service when they turn 19. The result is a lot of them are very patriotic of their country and appreciate what they had at home a lot more, things I rarely see in any Americans these days. Everyone in our country just wants everything handed to them anymore. I'm so sick of Americans who are spolied rotten and want everything but will do nothing to get it. All they do is b***h, b***h, b***h. I see so many anti-military posts in here and everywhere else and it makes me sick. Yes, war is never good, but it has to be done sometimes. The things we do is what has kept America the way it is for all this time. Things like September 11th happened when anti-war people came and started crying and we listened. Sorry to say it, but when we get lax in our security, it happens. It was one of the things that inspired me to join. Those who refuse to join or do anything to help out in protecting our country have no right to complain. Now, if all of us did just two measely years (it goes by fast, trust me), we'd all be better off. First of all, you wouldn't have to worry of these "terrible" recruitment tools. Second of all, you'd have a better insight of what it's really like in the world (the news doesn't know a damn thing, I promise you). You'd get free education and medical benifits. I don't really need to go more into that, I think. But most of all, the military teaches you to serve others and with others. Once you know how to serve others, you become a better person overall. When you see how bad it can be in other countries, you become humble. Trust me, I've never appreciated the US more than I do now... it's just the peope in it that I get sick of, which is why I'm doing the next 5 years in Asia. All I'm saying is that you should really think about what you're saying when you decide to get all anti-military. Who do you think gave you the right to b***h like that to begin with?

I don't see any problem with the military sponsoring tournaments and recruiting at the same time. I would hope that my kids are smart enough to know the difference between fake war and real life. All of you who are disgusted by this are agreeing with people that say games turn kids into killers. We've spent our youths arguing against that belief. How many of us played every violent game that ever came out? I did, and still do, but I know the difference between real and fake. Kids are smarter than that. They're not brainless. You people that are upset take our children for idiots. You're on the same level as Jack Thompson, using his argument when it suits you. Let the military use games to recruit, and teach your children to look past the window dressing. If they decide they want to join up, then support them. Put yourself in the kid's position. Did playing a game make you want to join the military? Not really. What makes you think kids today are dumber than you? You're all becoming what you hate...censors. This is petty of me, I know, but I have to respond to redhead108932. You all signed a pettition to get recruiters out of your school, correct? Can you please sign another to get English teachers in?

@ Kelemhuma: Actually I HAVE watched both of those documentaries. I honestly don't know enough about the religion portion to comment, but the economy one is flat out ridiculous. I don't know if you study economics at all, but you should take a look at macroeconomics and the Fed's role in the economy. That documentary is flat out full of crap. Everything it says is well put together and on the surface looks like it makes sense, but if you really look at the way the Fed works and the impact on the country's monetary system, its a load of garbage. The gold standard went away becuase of the increase of international trade, it didn't make sense anymore. And besides, banks get hurt by inflation, not helped by it. There would be no reason for a banking institution to want inflation. If you loan money out (like a bank does) inflation hurts you because you are being paid back with money that is worth LESS than what you loaned out. The person who took out the loan is better off because of inflation. The factual errors don't stop there. I bet you can't find a reputable economist who thinks we are worse off because of the Fed, and thats because we are better off with it than we were without it.

I don't think many people here are arguing the fact that joining the military is a noble calling. I for one have nothing but respect for anyone that is willing to put their lives on the line for our freedom. But don't you think it cheapens the Air Force's image just a bit when they use tactics like free pizza, soda and video games to attract kids that are much too young to be thinking about joining the military. If they grow up and feel the need to join, then I support them 100%. But spare them the military propaganda until they are mature enough to be making these decisions.

Kelemhuma - Who the hell is "Norwell Noriaga"? Could you possibly mean - Manuel Noriega? You know, you don't have to believe eveything that has "documentary" written on it. The world is corrupt, yes, but that extends to leftwing propagandists as well. We supported Noriega only so far as it it benefitted us. And benefit us, it did until Manuel went of the deep end, forcing us to take him down by invading Panama. Guess what? The world is a big, complicated place. What would you have us do? Roll over and die? Probably. It was in our interest to sell weapons to Iraq (you are mistaken about Iran) during the Iran-Iraq war. Islamic fundamentalism was a greater threat than Bath nationalism. These are the kind of hard choices grown-ups make. Adults, without the luxury of living inside a paranoid echo-chamber of clueless "activists".
