Ahead of E3, Take-Two extends its "Agent" trademark

Take-Two granted an extension on the trademark for its long-dormant Cold War-era console game from Rockstar.

by

Just three weeks out from E3 2014, Take-Two this week was granted an extension on a pair of trademarks it holds for the long-dormant video game Agent. United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) documents show that Take-Two filed for an an extension on both trademarks on May 21 and was granted approval that same day.

Does this mean an official announcement is coming soon? Not necessarily. After all, Take-Two renewed its Agent trademarks last summer, and we haven't heard a peep about the game since. There's no reason to believe Take-Two extending the trademarks would be any different. However, Take-Two extending its ownership of the Agent name at least shows that the company is interested in hanging onto Agent for some reason to be announced later.

"We don’t comment on such matters," Alan Lewis, Take-Two's vice president of corporate communications, told GameSpot today.

Agent was announced all the way back in 2007, when Sony revealed it as a PlayStation 3-exclusive. Sony later talked more about it at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, revealing it would be set in the 1970s during the Cold War and that Sam and Dan Houser would be overseeing the project at Rockstar North. Most recently, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in August 2012 that, "We haven't announced anything about [Agent] yet."

When the game does ship, it will do so with high expectations. In 2009, then-Take-Two president Ben Feder told GameSpot that Agent is being groomed to be the next Grand Theft Auto. The first images of the game emerged in 2011.

Earlier this month, Take-Two confirmed that its Rockstar Games subsidiary would ship a game for the PlayStation 4/Xbox One console generation in 2014, but it remains to be seen what this project is. Asked if Rockstar Games would have a presence at E3 next month, Take-Two didn't say yes and didn't say no. "At this point, Rockstar has not announced that they're going to be attending E3," Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said at the time.

Sony's potential E3 lineup this year is bonkers:

Agent

The Last Guardian

Uncharted 4

Project Beast

Siphon Filter

Heavenly Sword 2

Media Molecule IP

Guerrilla Games IP

Sony Santa Monica IP/God Of War 4

Guilty Gear XRD

The Order

Wipeout(god please be true!)

As long as they show Uncharted and Project Beast, I'll be happy, if they REALLY wanted to please me, they'd show Guilty Gear and Wipeout aswell, but if they REALLY, REAAALLY wanted to please me they'd show all of these lol.... One must admit, all of these rumors sound way to good to be true.

I'll start paying attention when there's actually a gameplay trailer.

I thought this was cancelled too.

Sony needs more of this: exclusives from third-party outside developers reminiscent of the PS2 days.  Besides Gran Turismo GoW and Last of Us, their exclusives last gen took a while before they sold 3MM.  For the number of exclusives they crank out, they can do better.  I think having outside studios handle some of these in the way MS did last gen will do even more good for the system.

I look forward to this game - it's still in my Gamefly Q !

I wonder if it's still gonna be an exclusive, if it ever gets done that it.

IDK, I think when it comes to R* I'll be lowering my expectations...

nothing they did last gen was all that great and they just got a free pass on everything....

the best game with the R* logo last gen was the R* published LA Noire....

GTA5 comes in at a second but even that game has no lasting appeal.....

Great to see that Agent should hopefully make a comeback! Now all we need is The Last Guardian, Half Life 3 and Fallout 4 and we're golden for this year's E3!!!

I would love to see a Bully 2 for PS4/XB1. I'll be surprised if Rockstar doesn't have anything to show at the E3.

It's quite likely Agent will be a Ps4/Xone game. They're just been the usual secretive gits.

I'm sure it will be announced one day, too many rumours not to... but this TM renewal doesn't mean it could be this game that they release in 2015.

I sure hope it is Bully 2, this Agent game did not have me excited due to it supposed to be a FPS. We have too many of that already these days!

Then again it is Rockstar so it should be great regardless.

@blackace I wonder if they could really get away with a new Bully game.  The word "bully" is now such a big deal, I imagine the controversy would be 100x worse.

@blackace I didnt like last Bully game because it was bit hard  but hope next bully game be 10 times better.

@blackace Rockstar is notorious for skipping E3, so don't be shocked if nothing is shown there...
