After Burner Climax-ing on 360, PS3

Latest installment of Sega's arcade flight combat series lands on Xbox Live, PSN this spring.

Sega's jet fighting After Burner series has been running on stealth mode for about 15 years. In that stretch, the only new installments of the flight combat franchise have been 2007's PSP-exclusive After Burner: Black Falcon and the rarely seen 2006 arcade game After Burner Climax.

Do a barrel roll!

Now Sega wants the series to resurface on gamers' radars. The publisher has announced downloadable Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of After Burner Climax and a PlayStation Store rerelease for Black Falcon.

Set for launch on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store in the spring, After Burner Climax gives players three planes to choose from and 20 stages with branching paths to blast through. The "Climax" part of the game's name comes from a new gameplay mechanic that lets players slow down time for easier missile locks and evasive maneuvers. In keeping with the series' arcade roots, development duties were entrusted to Sega's AM2 development division, the same studio behind coin-op classics like Space Harrier, Out Run, and Virtua Fighter.

Originally launched to decent reviews, After Burner: Black Falcon sees a terrorist cell dubbed Black Falcon planejacking 13 fighter jets from the CIA. Players are tasked with making the skies friendly again by hopping into the cockpit of 19 licensed planes, including F-14D Tomcats, F-22 Raptors, and F-15E Strike Eagles.

Black Falcon was developed by Planet Moon Studios, the creators of Armed & Dangerous, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, and Infected. After Burner: Black Falcon will be available on the PlayStation Store February 4.

Will you be able to unlock the arcade version of After Burner in this game?

Excellent news. I am glad that Sega seems to be putting out some solid titles now. :)

The only series Sega needs to expand is Condemned. The second one was amazing (while the first wasn't anything near that), but a cliffhanger ending can't have me in suspense for too much longer.

@gamer082009 Definatly! No point them releasing a port of an old game apart from to generate a new audience for the older shenmue games. If they ever did make a new one it would be as revolutionary as the 1st two games were.

@Markie75 I partially agree with you..BUT I don't want a older Shenmue. I want a next gen Shenmue game, but I highly doubt it'll happen.

woohoo!! afterburner is back!!! on a side note, is there another Ace combat coming out?? the game industry doesnt seem to like plane games... but its hecka fun blow those little buggers out of the virtual sky

For those interested, playthroughs of the arcade version are easily found on YouTube. The only thing that I see 'wrong' with this so far is the limited plane selection... there's really not much of an excuse for that, not after having 19 rides to earn and have fun with over in Black Falcon...

off topic- i still want that vectorman 3D remake. back on topic- cool. it's totally impossible for any gamer from back in the day to not equate Jets with Afterburner. not to mention, the developers making this game have done some of my favorites. this will be great!

A classic returns. After Burner was one of my first games on the original Sega Master System.

Sweet. I have missed that game sense it disappeared for the sega years go. I think the last one I was able to play was 3, so it'l be nice that it comes back. Another good flight game was the Strike games but I guess you take the games when you can.

Good potential here. Many old school formulas like this one still work great and the guys behind similar classics aren't likely to mess this up. Glad to see this one may work out.

Way to go SEGA!!! Some people forget you once were the best creator and innovator of video games way before anyone else and you never played it safe like the big N. Hats off to you your games are getting better and better.

Been playing the arcade version for years now (cool little moving roll cage and all) so I think I'll pass on this one.

I wish more of these download only games had demos available. I'd be more inclined to spend my cash (even if it is only $4) after a hint of what gameplay and graphics are like.

I cant wait for this game. I have always loved Afterburner and the 2006 arcade game looked amazing. Now, if they only bring back a new Shinobi game, I will be one excited fan for sure.

YES!!!!!! As much as I love all the AAA titles coming out and this and that, I have seriously been waiting for this. Awesome! Now I just need some more mid-90s SEGA arcade games like Daytona USA, Sega Rally and the original Virtua Fighter to make an appearance.

THis is awesome! day one download for me. I was an Intern at Walt Disney world in Florida for 6 months. Climax was the most popular arcade machine there. I used to play that thing like crazy, especially in Disney Quest. it brings back good memories. Can't wait to tell my fellow Disney friends about this. they loved it too. THe PSP version i bought for $30 and its very well worth it. its the entire experience made for the PSP. Three separate, long campaigns and co-op greatly extend the value of this game. Its a total blast from beginning to end! if you have a PSP, pick it up.

I'd say this is a smart market research test on Sega's part. If this game sells well on XBL and PSN, there will be an announcement for a new game at E3. I remember playing the first After Burner in the arcades oh so many years ago. I'm buying this one purely for nostalgic reasons.

they want the series to resurface so they rerelease a decent game instead of making a new one? shouldnt they just have made a new one? lol

I'd rather play a game like Ace Combat with all it's fighter jets but played like classic Afterburner, This is still good news..... I remember playing the original in arcade......
