Adventure Time Is Ending, But Thankfully Not Very Soon

Adventure Time is over.

Cartoon Network's wacky and beloved animated show Adventure Time is reaching the end of the road.

The network has confirmed that the show will come to an end after its ninth season, which is in production right now. Thankfully for fans, new episodes will continue to run through 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Adventure Time is definitely weird--and that's part of the charm that helped it win six Emmys. It stars a human character named Finn and a dog named Jake, who is voiced by John DiMaggio (Gears of War, Futurama). They live in the Land of Ooo and they go on incredible and outlandish adventures; they took down an evil mega frog once and it was great.

Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher said in Adventure Time "changed the definition of what a kids' TV series could be, and it's had a resounding impact upon popular culture around the world."

He added: "Cartoon Network Studios is proud to have brought together this group of brilliant artists and animators who helped make Adventure Time one of the most critically acclaimed TV series of a generation."

He did not offer any explanation for why Adventure Time is going off the air. The show spawned a merchandise line and a video game series, the latest release being 2015's Adventure Time: Finn and Jake Investigations.

Creator Pendleton Ward described Adventure Time as a "passion project."

"We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too!" he said. "I'm really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It's a special thing, I think."

Some notable celebrities who lent their voices to Adventure Time included Mark Hamill, Ron Perlman, Matthew Broderick, Andy Samberg, and "Weird" Al Yankovic.

The Adventure Time cancellation announcement comes just weeks after Cartoon Network announced that another one of its cult hits, Regular Show, would also be ending.

In other news about Adventure Time, last weekend's Season 28 premiere of The Simpsons opened with a cool Adventure Time-themed couch gag.
