Activision's Civil War detailed

Confederate, Union soldiers do battle on Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 2; historical conflicts at Gettysburg, Bull Run, Antietam.

Though one of the biggest wars in America's history, the Civil War isn't that big when it comes to games. World War II dominates the wargame category, with titles on just about every platform in multiple genres.

Activision Value is hoping to give gamers a new history lesson this fall when it releases The History Channel Civil War. Though the game's existence isn't news, the details are. Previously revealed for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2, Civil War will also be released on the PC.

Civil War will be a first-person action game and will take place during 12 of the war's most notorious battles, including Gettysburg, Bull Run, and Antietam. The game will feature authentic guns, like repeating rifles, revolvers, and Gatling guns, but it will also feature plenty of gritty hand-to-hand combat with bayonets, sabers, and good old-fashioned fists. Gamers can play as either the Confederate or Union soldiers.

The History Channel Civil War is rated T for Teen and will hit stores November 14. The game will cost $49.99 on the Xbox 360, $39.99 on the PlayStation 2, and $29.99 on the PC.

This seems very interesting, I am looking forward to this title. Also, they did have "grenades" It was dynamite sticks, and they didn't use it much because it was too unpredictable: like it could blow off your hand while your throwing it

Should be interesting, but the content seems to be lacking.

Sorry to ruin your learning experience, but they didn't use grenades until the end of the war. Even then, they were only used a couple times. They had a tendency to blow up while the soldier was still holding them.

Well, I didn't even know this game was coming out. I was going to get Gears of War but then saw this game for ten bucks cheaper. Plus I saw it was made by Activision which is a name you can trust so I thought hey I'll check it out. I can awlays return it if I don't like it. First off, there's no multiplayer which seems like it could be really fun if they did have one especially using swords and knives and bayonets. Aside from lack of multiplayer let's discuss the campaign. You can either be the confederate or the yanks. Me, being from Tennessee played the Confedrates. I must say it is an enjoyable game. And you do learn some history. One thing I learned is that they had grenades!! I didn't know that. At one point I was sneaking through a Yankee camp and it was at night and for a second I was startled as I heard this strange noise, then I realized it was the soldiers snoring! Now that's detail my friend. Very cool. Plus you get to reenact battles that were very close to where you may be living! Some of the battle are really close to where I live. Let's just say, weapons have come a long way. Try taking a shot then having to reload your black-powder musket after each shot. The soldiers got very fast at it back in the war and if you use the musket in the game you'll have to reload after each shot. All the weapons are very authenitic to the time period which I must say is what MAKES THE ENTIRE GAME. FPS's are a dime a dozen everyone knows this so what sets this apart is the weapons mainly and the atmosphere and the authentisity of the game. It's a good game and the achievements are reasonable and fun to go after. You get ranked on your accuracy after each battle. The graphics are good. It kind of reminds me of Band of Brothers games except in the Civil War period. I give the game an 8 out of 10 all around. I have thought about this concept in the past and thought it would be really cool to see a good game made about the Civil War and this does satisfy. And the price is fair at the $49.00 price. $59.00 probably would have been too much considering no multiplayer. Very enjoyable. Check it out for sure.

yeah,i think this will be interesting considering they really dont come out with that much Civil war games, and the pricing is alittle ackward....it looks good i wish they had videos for it or more screens but hey mayber they are suprising us who knows!

whats up with the 20 dollar price differ. I dont like them ripping me off because I like 360 better than my computer ;) This should be interesting, although I havent played a good civil war game yet - all the ones i've ever played were way too confusing to be any fun.

History Channel... might be kind of somewhat educational maybe. It's by Activision, though. I guess they just got the lisencing somehow. Well, this one looks like it could be interesting. I'd get it if it had historic value.

A Civil War FPS could be really fun. There's a Revolutionary War mod for the Source engine and it's very fun to play. Different war, but I have a feeling this game will be very similar. In the Rev. War game you pretty much just fire once and then run in stabbing. Not realistic, but very fun actually. That game is multiplayer only, however, and that's one thing that makes it so fun. We'll see how this one comes out.

In reply to Tungsten88 I'm a civil war reenactor, and I can easily load my rifle in about 15-20 seconds, so loading time should not be a problem in this game.

Tungsten88
Tungsten88

Uhhh...how would you reload? For a real precussion cap rifle, it would probably take around a minute to reload, and if only repeating rifles and pistols are used, wouldn't that detract from the realism? I've thought about a Civil War game a lot and the reloading is still something I can't get past.

I'm gonna definately buy this game... pls history channel give us a ww1 game next .... If this game is a succes I don't see why a ww1 game wouldn't be a succes....

Wold war 2 games are great and i dont think that just because it dosent take place in wold war 2 gives it extra credit. they still need to make some next gen games with the pacific in wold war 2 and they need to make a realitic OMAHA BEACH for the next gen eny ways i think the cival war game will be fun and im gettin it. ive never playedd in a battle from the cival war and it will be exsiting. i also hope they will make a revolinary war and a wold war 1 game

Yeah, I have to agree with FIST-AF-Bloodlu The battles consisted of massive amounts of soldiers in large fields. Many of the soldiers couldn't just walk around as they pleased, they had to stay in formation. I hope this turns out good but how authentic will it be?

FINALLY! NOW DO A WW1 GAME AND I'LL PAY ATTENTION IN SCHOOL!

FIST-AF-Bloodlu
FIST-AF-Bloodlu

I like the idea, but during civil war battles 1000s of people took turns killin eachother during battles. I look at the screenshots and i see 10+, am i still expecting to much from next gen? Side note, WW1 is what developers should focus on, theres lots of potentials there for a epic game.

hmmm sounds interesting although repeating/revolving rifles where only produced en masse by the north and given only to "elite" units and there where snipers AKA sharpshooters organized into squads but anyway,,,,

um, niteowl, the armies back then didnt care if you were left or right handed. you always fired with your right hand, the only time your left arm was used to hold the weapon was support arms.

I was always wondering if someone would do a first person game ina war set before WW2. THIS BETTER HAVE SOUTHPAW CONTROL!!!!

I hope there are medics for the online portion, time to sharpen those saws. Btw i thought only the north had repeating rifles and that was only in the final year or so of the war.

What a great game. We'll just stand in a line, and take turns firing at each other with minute long reload times, don't break ranks and if you get hit, tough luck......fun stuff.

Wow, you don't really see Civil war games too often. This will probabally be pretty cool.

I am DEFINITELY excited about this game. The last (and IMO only) good Civil War games were by Sid Meier for the PC eons ago. I will definitely be picking up this game, particularly because the last History Channel PC game about the Alamo was better than expected.

that's really cool. I already have CoD2 so I wasn't looking to get CoD3 (the fact that it's coming just a year later and it seems pretty similar to Cod2). This game should be very interesting because of the weapons and fighting styles are different from WW2 but I'll wait for the reviews before I get any more excited. I am happy that Activision is doing this because CoD is a great war franchise so this could be something of the same quality.

I'll get this game when the "use an Ak-47" mod comes out, and you know it will.

Long live the Confederacy! Can't wait to try this out. I hope they try to be realistic with the weapons. I want to see guns that take at least 10 secs. to reload and a good selection of what was available back them. They need everything from cap and ball revolvers to sharps rifles and canons.
