Activision should be nervous about Call of Duty - EA

Battlefield 3 publisher's spokesman mocks call for civility from rival, suggests competing blockbuster shooter franchise could be gone in two or three years.

Last week at Gamescom, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg called for a cease-fire in verbal hostilities surrounding Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3 going up against his own company's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, asking the equivalent of "Can't we all just get along?" It turns out the answer to that rhetorical question is "No."

The Battlefield 3-Modern Warfare 3 rivalry is ideal for fans of sniping.

As reported by Kotaku, Electronic Arts spokesman Jeff Brown responded to Hirshberg with a statement of his own. "Welcome to the big leagues, Eric," Brown said. "I know you're new in the job, but someone should have told you this is a competitive industry. You've got every reason to be nervous. Last year Activision had a 90 share in the shooter category. This year, Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you'll be out of the category in 2-3 years. If you don't believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy of Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk."

The numbers regarding Activision's market share in the first-person shooter category and EA's target with Battlefield 3 line up with those given by EA COO Peter Moore in an interview with GameSpot last week.

As for the reference to Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk, both of those series are on hiatus for 2011, just a few years after being dominant in their respective genres. However, they are unlikely to lie dormant for long, as Activision has indicated new installments of both Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero are in the works.

in the end both activision and ea will be out of this category and some good company that actually cares about quality and not quantity will be king

I don't know if CoD will become forgotten in 2 or 3 years time, but in its current direction, the repetitiveness of the CoD series may burn out much of their fanbase. However, CoD is still king, and it will probably remain so for the next few years, if CoD sales have anything to say about it. That said, CoD can easily have its game design changed up if it finds its sales dropping, and the industry leaning another way. Unless IW/Activision does something incredibly stupid in the future, CoD will continue to win simply because it's catering to what many many fps fans want. And for those CoD haters out there shaking their heads about 'another CoD fanboy', all this is from an anti-CoD pc gamer who hates simplistic run and gun gameplay, and how it has shaped (warped?) game design. The BF series (while still run and gun-ish) has enough varied gameplay in it to at least keep me contented, which is why BF will always remain on the map. I think the direction fps' head towards in the future may also be determined with the next generation of consoles, and how developers use the new hardware to its full advantage.

Very bad sportsmanship, EA! Activision reacted politely towards your vicious attack, yet you still want to land a few low blow! I don't get it

I like playing both CoD and Battlefield. Depending on my mood and need for different gameplay experiences and they are both great in their own ways. I dont compare them. All this fighting is retarded and a waste of time in my opinion. Let the games Gloat for themselves, as great games can do that. They make you the player drop your jaw as you sit in silence as it gloats in your face. I cant wait for some new game in the future of the genre to blow away both CoD and Battlefield series' and make them cower and crawl away with their tails tucked in between their legs saying "WTF? That was awesome!!!" Then we all can embrace the new and come together as one. Just sayin..

how did that market share statement work out? oh not so well you say? XD lol I could care less which is the better game, it's hilarious to watch these business men make bold statements, then get owned. :) - We will see i guess.. hopefully the Kotor MMOrpg won't end up like this.

Competition is good. These people need to realize they have to be ambitious to succeed, not just keep shoveling out the same crap year after year.

CoD just keeps getting more and more sales than last year. lol.

I have a feeling that MW3 is going to destroy BF3 in sales.

I guess me saying they stick with if its not broke dont fix it is completely wrong as i stated what they did with server browsing thats possibly the worse idea ever

Jeremy0522
Jeremy0522

Lol EA talking trash when BF3 has so much stuff messed up with it and a actual browser for server browsing cant change setting outside of gameplay you have to be in a match to change your settings. And just as some poeple have been saying the people that play CoD ruin the game but honestly i dislike both EA and Activision equally the direction they go with their games never have a fresh feel they stick by the saying if its not broke dont fix but yet they seem to fail on improving what does work in my personal opinion i think they should think of maybe a new IP im tired of seeing these washed out military shooters

EA talks about making better guitar games and skateboarding games but don't forget EA messed up James Bond and NASCAR which Activision took and made 10 times better than what EA could ever do. Besides guitar games aren't that impressive anymore.

What Brown doesn't seem to realize is that to continue the trend of Activision's declining market share EA would have to make a Battlefield game a year. In other words become Call of Duty. A sequel to an already established franchise should sell well it won't drive the company every year unless they put out a title every year.

@campbell153 I've seen it and I'm not impressed at all. Either way graphics isn't everything. BF3 will not beat MW3

OH look, MW3 is everywhere here on Gamespot. Activision must have bought this website! And even after that HUGE amount of money spent on marketing, BF3 will be the best game! Pathetic !

@nyran125 one more thing honestly if console gamers are getting a stripped down version of the game while PC gets the real BF3 then why should we pay full price???

Agent2800
Agent2800

@nyran125 Sir please stop being a pc fanboy and look at what this company is doing(EA) like i said look at the product and look at what they've shown for the console versions...NOTHING how do console gamers know EXACTLY what there getting? i don't care how "out dated" the console hardware is they need to show us what we're paying for on consoles because if i recall the console gamers pay more for there games(idk about this one) so why do they get less? if EA wants to talk garbage about other companies they need to bring something to the table not just PC because if i remember the reason Activision is so big is due to the fact that they did focus on consoles(there marketing strategy towards DLC is terrible) but their aim was at the consoles EA can't hope to out due them with just big trash talk I honestly hope console gamers due there research on this game B4 they jump on the BF3 bandwagon they need to look at whats been shown and what the developers have said if you listen to them you will see and hear them talk only about the PC version of the game and talk little to nothing about the console version...now why is that, what are they trying to hide?

people that are pissed that the console game isnt going to be as good as the PC version, your absolutely correct, however you cant expect console hardware to produce things PC can, if it doesnt have the hardware ....LOL..ok? BUY A PC......By the time you buy your HDTV, your console, your controllers that break every 6 months and 10 games youd have enough to buy the best PC on the market that would last you for the next 5 years in gaming on Ultra high graphic settings. Secondly once youve BOUGHT that awesoem PC with your HDTV money, youd be able to play your playstation on your PC too with a HDMI cable, i can even use a playstation 3 controller on my PC :):)

i hated Bad company 2, lol..Most boring mp fps game iver ever played...Rather play counter strike for the rest of my life. Im so sick an TIRED of EA inciting hate wars with Call OF Duty..I played modern Warfare 2 over bad company because i felt MW2 was a more enjoyable experience and Hardcore mode in Modern warfare 2 was way more interesting that Bad companys rush mode. I found Bad company 2 to go on forever and bore the crap out of me. If you love DICE games, cool, thats really great, but dont push your HATE onto other games and insult the other 96 million people out there that enjoy Counter strike and call of duty. Lastly i dont want every game to come out, to have big maps and drivable vehicles.

Why are console players so scared bf3 is gonna suck?? does an1 actually believes that dice -after bringin a AAA experience with both bad company titles which already have vehicles and all- would suck at console developing?? I would be far more worried for MW3, coz u know, Infinity Ward stated it will run at 540p resolution and it will upscale to 720 and 1080 depending on tv settings -that alone garantees the game will look fugly!

Agent2800
Agent2800

@jmace1 sir you obviously don't know me very well because i hate the COD franchise and would very much like to see it fall but i'm not gonna stand by while another company sits by and provides false hope to console gamers, they say the experience will be the same on PC and consoles but it won't be look at what little footage they've shown of the console material....now what excuse do they have for this? none what so ever...now don't get me wrong i'm not even gonna touch cod3 but i'm not gonna easily be fooled by EA either.Once the game releases i won't rush out to get it i'll sit back and see what everyone else says about it on the consoles and when the truth comes out then we'll see if that game gets my money

nikca16

imo BF is better then CoD and cs 1.6 beats both of em :) to this day according to some steam stats, more players choose cs over CoD and BF... the rest is business...where there are no nice guys and friends. enjoy your game whatever it is.cheers!

@Agent2800 @dcrabiddog @gangster480 Google Robert Kotick, the CEO of Activision Blizzard which owns COD, to see how you literally have zero idea what you're defending. Is this quote by Jeff Brown cocky? Yes. Are the majority of wealthy men making massive profits on games arrogant? Yes! If you want to hold against EA for being cocky then at least stop being hypocrites and understand that when COD was clearly on top Activision was just as greedy, arrogant, and egotistical.

Agent2800
Agent2800

@max_111 STFU man i don't care what EA has done in the past i'm talking about HERE AND NOW i'm talking about BF3 it doesn't matter what they did for past BF games this is the game they are promoting most this is the game they are saying will take Activision down like i said Activision only maintains there standing now due to consoles now if EA is gonna talk all that garbage and take Activisions market they need to focus on what they focused on, you see your too much of a pc fanboy to really see what i was getting at so what if i made a mistake about the vehicle thing big woop they are still stripping down the console versions and how is that gonna take the MW3 fan base?

how is frostbite 2 better? it runs at a crummy 30 frames per second like all the other crummy dice games! lol! you guys crack me up, i was going to buy battlefield and give it another try and then this guy comes out and acts just like most his fans do, and i said to myself, rabiddog you may be crazy from rabies but you ain't no fool, i will stick to the fun hectic social atmosphere oh and smooth non clunky controls, 60 frames per second, lightening fast melee ect. ect. ect.... and leave the high and mighty eccentrics to themselves! grrrrrrrr! cod forever and dice just can't get it right!

EA and Activision may both be money loving evil corporations. But EA doesn't run their franchises into the ground with yearly releases (disregarding the ever so milked sports games). I love Battlefield and Call of Duty, don't get me wrong. But i am gonna pass on CoD until Activision gets their sh*t straight.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@gangster480 I know they are, I even used the word "cocky" in my post. EA aren't worse then Activision, Activision do two things that EA don't do (on consoles at least), they don't have yearly releases of the same game year after year, Activision do it with Guitar Hero and Call Of Duty to an extent that we're bombarded by the titles constantly. Granted Battlefield has been having a lot of releases as of late but the games are very different gameplay-wise and visually; they're even running on different engines. I can't think of another EA published game with yearly installments unless I'm mistaken. The one thing they do that rubs everyone up the wrong way is charging too much for DLC (Treyarch and IW don't set the prices) and they become control freaks over their developers, the IW case is a good one. Even if BF3 does become "the new CoD" as I stated before, everyone was behind the franchise in the CoD 4 and World At War era. It started getting a bad reputation with MW2 which as I stated before, was catering too much to the casual market unlike CoD 4 which was somewhat closer to Counter Strike on PC. DICE haven't done this with Battlefield 3.

who want to get in helicopter with me I need a Good Gunner--- BF3 forever.... I have been playing BF2 since 2006 and if you can pilot better than me see you in BATTLEFIELD 3 soldier name---> RENALDY75 --- by the way what the hell is COD?

I just hope that BF, even if it some how and very unlikely beats the tar out of CoD, doesn't become the "next CoD".

@MEDzZ3RO EA can be as confident as they want. but they are not just confident. they are cocky. they insult and belittle activision and when activision said lets just stop talking trash to eachother. they decline and insult them some more. what does this say about them as a company? what do you think is going to happen if battle field 3 wins? they will just become the new evil. how many game company have you seen that changed a winning formula? NONE. halo, god of war, gears, ninja gaiden, uncharted all have their formula they have stuck with. and so has battlefield. Im not saying battlefield will lose but it seems at this point ea has became worse than activision.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

EA have the right to be "cocky", to the unbiased person Battlefield 3 is undoubtedly the stronger game, engine's better, balancing's better, gameplay's arguably better and graphics are better. Call Of Duty has been the king of the castle for too long now, originally it was justified but it isn't anymore. Time for Battlefield or Counter Strike to reclaim the title. Treyarch are still making an effort to advance and change the series somewhat but IW aren't, they're rehashing the same game year after year, gamers are beginning to notice. This "war" doesn't really matter but I'd like to see CoD knocked down a peg or two; I don't however want the franchise to die, look at it either way it's still a decent franchise despite its flaws. In all honesty, although I'm a console gamer I'm more excited for Counter Strike then either Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3. I'll avoid MW3 entirely in favour of Resistance 3; I'll probably pick Battlefield 3 up towards the end of the year.

ea is really pissing me off. they are just coming off as cocky now. they dont have the right to be cocky. they will lose sales wise. battlefield will do great no doubt, but not better than cod. but why people would root for a company as classless as this is beyond me. Ea even try to mislead people. almost every footage they shown so far was on PC. I hear people talk about how good this game looks everyday unaware that it is not even running on their hardware. I dont like the things they are doing just to beat activision.

How about enabling some sort of cross - video - game play wherein we have a match between Call of Duty players using Modern Warfare 3s engine and Battlefield 3 players using Battlefield 3s engine to settle the dispute once and for all. Seriously, as much as I adore Battlefield 3 even though I won't be able to play it due to its supposedly steep requirements, these guys fight like kids. They're forgetting that ultimately its the gamers that will decide who wins. If video gamers want, they could boycott both these games and give these head honchos a slap on their faces (although I know such a thing will just NEVER happen) !!!

Ok... good job EA, you got a bit smarter. You figured out Activisions pattern. Sadly, mister EA, you sorta got a pattern of your own. GL I'm honestly looking forward to both titles, however, especially more excited to see who gets their socks rocked here. It's always hilarious when a CEO of any company looks like a fool. And anytime there's two big CEO big shot companies competing, there's never a draw.
