Activision removes Spider-Man, X-Men and Deadpool games from Steam, Xbox Live, and PSN

Expired licensing agreement takes Marvel games away from true believers.

An expired licensing agreement means that all of Activision's titles based in the Marvel universe have been delisted and removed from sale, including the recently released Deadpool.

High Moon Studios' critically lukewarm Deadpool shipped in June 2013, and is now unavailable on Steam, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network. Physical copies of the game are still available.

The Activision titles affected are Deadpool, X-Men: The Official Game, X-Men: Destiny, X-Men: Origins - Wolverine, and the Spider-Man titles Edge of Time, Shattered Dimensions, Friend or Foe, and Web of Shadows.

Beenox's movie tie-in Amazing Spider-Man is still available, however, and Activision community manager Dan Amrich confirmed that Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still on track to be released alongside the movie sequel this year.

Activision's Marvel games disappearing digitally has occurred shortly after Capcom removed its Marvel vs. Capcom games from online storefronts.

"Just as Capcom was asked to remove their Marvel games from download, so did we. Activision's ASM2 game comes out this spring," said Amrich on Twitter.

Damn. The only superhero game I ever liked is Deadpool, does ASM2 coming out later mean Deadpool will become available again? I would love to get it on PC.

Now is the chance to purchase this games new at a cheap price before they become collectors items and sell for 100 dollars like the Ultimate Alliance series.

Just so you guys know, as of 1/5/2014 you can still get Deadpool on PSN through amazon. They're still selling the digital codes for it

Feel bad for the people that wanted to buy one of those games digital before it was remove the next day. They must feel sick even though they might buy a different game.

Oh no! You mean to tell us we no longer have digital access to a handful of totally forgettable games.

Oh the humanity!

Four Spider-Man games I'm not sure I could tell one from the other.

Man I hope whoever gets the license makes games like the Ultimate Alliance games again, those were great co-op games!

Ah, the vagaries of licensed games. :P

Disney wants to keep Marvel for its own game-makers, it would seem.

Rocksteady should just make every Marvel and DC games from now on. You know what fuck it, every single 3rd person game how about that?

Hopefully a better company will be able to make Marvel games now.  I would love an Arkham quality Spider-Man game.

Why is it so hard for them to give a heads up that the game is going to be pulled soon. It should be plastered across the front of the store page. Why is it that hard to do, it would only increase sales. They could have left it at it's original price and posted a message on the front page and they would have sold more copies than with it being on sale, there are always people going thinking "if I wait a little longer it will be even cheaper," however on the flip side is the fact that when someone is told that they will never be able to buy something again they go crazy purchasing up what they can (think back to the Twinkies scare of 2012.) Personally I already own it, I got it in the fall sale. GOG let people know they where loosing the fallout series, not only that but they even gave everyone who didn't already own it free copies on the first couple days of their winter sale.

Oh no, I wanted to see how good Deadpool actually was, in 3-4 years when my backlog allows me to play it. Now I might never get the chance to play it, because I never buy physical copies anymore. Not with the advantages of digital distribution and steam sales.

So, this is the real reason why digital games suck.  No one is going to come into my house and take my PS2 disks because "the license ran out."

Fuck you, Activision, and fuck you, Marvel.  If you structure a contract so your games have a predestined shelf life stop making games at all.

They can't even turn on antialiasing for the trailer...really....

I don't think people seem to realize that these games can be removed from circulation entirely without reason if they're only digital titles.  This is why I don't think exclusively digital game systems will do well.  Now I'll confess I'm primarily a PC gamer, but it also depends on where you get your games from.  Getting them from GOG.com allows you to download the entire game and store it on your personal drives without any need to connect to a client or a service of some kind.

I don't think digital games are bad as long as you can download the entire package and save on your own personal storage.  I just don't get why these games need to disappear for no reason.  It's just ridiculous.  You're only hurting yourself by not letting the fans buy your games.

THEN AGAIN, this is Activision.  I don't think Activision cares about gamers anymore.  Around the turn of the century they were cool but since then they only seem to care about money and only view the players as a means to make more money, and that IS NOT the way to operate in such a personal kind of industry.

If this means Activision is finally losing the licence it's about fucking time!!!!! license titles out on a case by case basis....or here's an idea Marvel....build a Marvel game Studios and make games yourselves....hire experts from the industry to help....

Best Activision made Marvel games were the X-Men Legends and the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance....

I decided to skip on the $10 Deadpool deal even though I really wanted it because I believed it would be cheaper during the Summer Sale ;_;

From the sounds of it, Activision won't be renewing the license so I won't be playing Deadpool now because I was cheap enough to think I would get it for a few dollars less...

It's funny that all those games were on sale for cheap on XBL just a week ago. I have never gotten into any of the Spiderman games and heard Deadpool game was garbage, so I passed on all that crap. Not a great loss for me as most of these super hero games haven't been good.

This happend to the James Bond games a while back too. Looked for a digital version of Bloodstone, couldnt find it. Why i prefer the hard-copy version. Can always find great finds in the used/out-of-date shelves (even if the deal beetween the companies experies).

@Gelugon_baat They do indeed seem to be pooling everything together. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Fox's license comes up for renewal.

@playniko69I think I'm just fine without Rocksteady making games for the whole third person genre.

The bulky character models are tolerable in batman... But completely unnecessary.

@Thanatos2k You realize that if we already bought them we can still download them as long as we already bought/paid for them, right?

We just cannot buy them new.

Not a tough concept.

Your PS2 Disks will eventually wear out.  Usually in about 10 years or more (sometimes sooner) but they scratch.  They break.  Your dog steps on them.

@Zacmaccraken "but but but... but digital is the future!!" like i said, it's all fun and games until the company takes the "fun and games" part away.

@MJ12-Conspiracy I would like to throw Spider-Man 2 into the hat. That was one of the few decent movie tie-ins and I somehow managed to waste hours upon hours playing it.

But after playing lego marvel super heroes i really want some real life marvel co op action....cant believe lego is doing a better job than fucking activision in bringing a good marvel game.

@PupchuI have the disk version of JB: Bloodstone. Got that over a year ago.

@PoodlejumperOld PS2 games are tradeable and buyable used.  Digital games are not.  What is someone who wants to play the game at this point supposed to do?  Oh right, piracy is now the only way to legitimately play it.

By the way, my PS1 disks still work.

@PlatinumPaladin Last Spidey game I liked was the second one made by Neversoft on PSX and yes i know that was a long time ago....I just never bothered with any of the others after that game...

@Securator I just purchased Lego Marvel yesterday actually. I've never played a Lego game before, but it's pretty good. The character selection, stages and how all the heroes and villains come together are great. A next gen, more "realistic" approach would be amazing though. I can only imagine if done correctly.

severus92985

@Securator Play Marvel Heroes Online.  Its basically Diablo 3 with Marvel characters (minus a broke loot system and AH) Don't go off of the reviews on it unless you can find a recent one.  They have made tons of improvements to the game so 90% of the reviews out right now are outdated.

PlatinumPaladin

@Gelugon_baat @PlatinumPaladin  I think that'd be a real shame as Sony have done great work with their licenses, and I think Disney trying to do everything would mean a lot of garbage being produced.

@Poodlejumper Not really, There have been a couple games on steam that were removed from my purchases and that's Steam.  What makes you think other DD services wont do the same?

@PoodlejumperOnce again.  This time using your brain: I do not own Deadpool.  How can I - RIGHT NOW - obtain it legally?

I can find and buy an old CD of FF7 if I wanted.  How can one obtain Deadpool?

If you don't see how this is a massive problem you're ignorant or stupid, or both!

@Poodlejumper My copy of Jet Grind Radio for my Dreamcast that I bought in 2000 still works.

You say you're "not talking out of your ass," and yet, here you are talking as if all disc based games "wear out."

You just proves that you're willing to lie for the sake of corporate greed. Gets some self-esteem.

@Thanatos2k Once again.  This time with feeling: If you already bought it digitally.  You can download it again.

CDs do wear out.  Not pulling that out of my ass. Google it.

My Res Evil 2 for PS1 is unplayable.
