Activision: Destiny expected to become the "best-selling new video game IP in history"

But what does that mean?

by

During a post-earnings financial call yesterday, Activision Blizzard executives Bobby Kotick (CEO) and Eric Hirshberg (CEO of Activision Publishing) made the claim that Bungie's new shared-world shooter Destiny is on track to become the "best-selling new video game IP in history."

It's a bold claim, for sure, but what exactly does that mean? It all depends on what Activision considers to be a "new IP." The Super Mario Bros. franchise is an IP, or intellectual property, as is Call of Duty or Halo. Basically, if the game in question is the first in a series, expect to hear executives describe it as a "new IP."

If you think about "new IP" on a contemporary basis, Destiny is going up against the likes of Titanfall, The Order: 1886, Sunset Overdrive, and Evolve, among others. But if you define the parameters of "new IP" as simply the first installment of a new series throughout gaming history, you'd have to consider massively popular franchises like Super Mario and Final Fantasy, both of which have sold in excess of 100 million units to date.

Whatever the case, the distinction of "best-selling new video game IP in history" is a murky one. We've reached out to an Activision representative for comment.

Kotick and Hirshberg also said during the call that they anticipate Destiny could become Activision Publishing's third billion-dollar franchise, joining Call of Duty and Skylanders. The publisher has made a 10-year investment in Bungie and Destiny, so clearly they have high hopes for the franchise. But we won't know for sure how much life is in the series until launch on September 9.

I have mixed feelings about this. I respect Bungie and quite like what Destiny is shaping up to be, but then again it's from Activision so I'd struggle not to laugh if it bombed.

It sucks that they're probably right though.

Overconfident maybe? They should be humble about expected sales so they can be surprised by how they turn out.

Meh, bestselling new ip means it's just overhyped, not that it's actually any good.

Not really THAT murky GS. They mean that as the first game in a new series/world it will sell more than the first Mario, AC, Halo etc.

That or an impending online DRM doom!

Man Activision is licking its chops in anticpation for the money its thinks its gonna make off of Destiny. Man they can't wait to start raking in the cash from this game and its subsequent sequels. Well I say I at least hope Bungie gets a good sum of the profits as well if Destiny turns out a mega sucess like COD and that they don't get screwed over like Infinty Ward did.

Well, I sure hope they don't get disappointed then, because I really hate it when reality gets in the way of how analysts wants things to be.

I do find it sad when FPS games are released exclusively on consoles, because that means if I have any interest in playing them I'm forced to play them with a fucking controller instead of mouse and keyboard. And playing with the handicap of having to use a controller just makes the game less fun to play for me personally.

before or after they release it on pc?

I'm looking forward to this, I have been since I seen the first trailer of it at E3 last year. I hope it lives up to the hype.

The best thing about this game it's that they will not release for pc. Great move by them, who wants to lose sales with piracy?

Does anyone else suddenly have a slight desire to NOT pick this game up to spite Activision? It's too bad I probably won't be able to do that when it finally comes out...

Why wouldn't a company hype their game as far as they can? As long as they aren't flat out lying about content, then who cares. Companies don't just make games to share their ideas. It is also to make money. Some gamers act as if videogames are still made in the 80's and 90's atmosphere. In order to make money on a game that you spend tens or hundreds of millions of dollars on, you need to hype it and spend millions in advertising.

Who cares? It's one of those nebulous comments aimed at investors to squeeze more money out of them. I side with Activision-Blizzard over investors any day.

It just makes me think that they are a little bit full of themselves; they might be in for a rude surprise.

If they are including pack-ins then no chance. Wii Sports has sold over 80 million copies. Mind you at least 60 million, if not 70 million of those were included with a Wii but no non-pack in will ever beat that. In fact I highly doubt any game will ever come close to matching those numbers, considering no other game has sold even half as many copies. The best selling non-pack in game is either Pokemon if we consider Red, Blue, and Green as a single game (which sold about 30 million), Nintendogs (again if we are counting all versions as a single game) or Brain Age, which is as far as I know the best selling single SKU new IP with 20 million units sold. So depending on how they define it, they have to hit 20 million units minimum which seems a little insane to me, but then again if you throw a $100 million marketing campaign behind it and play it up as the next game from the makers of Halo and publisher of Call of Duty then I could see it selling a boatload.

I understand how you feel I feel the same way if a game relesed exclusivly on PC because playing with a mouse and Keyboard is unbearable to me and some PC games don't include controller support and you gotta find a work around like Xpadder or something. I think they should release these games for all platforms so ppl can choose there preference instead of being forced to use an unfamilar control scheme just for the sake of exclusivity.

@Diegoctba  Piracy? I thought Activision's new excuse for their games selling poorly was "it's because the new consoles".

GarGx1
GarGx1

@Diegoctba I didn't know that console games are immune to piracy or that you can actually play pirated console games, that I didn't know existed, online as well!

KristenVr
KristenVr

@Diegoctba  Isn't Destiny always-online multiplayer game? That means you can't pirate it, well u can but u useless, cannot play it! Unless server files leak, which is highly unlikely.

RELeon
RELeon

@Diegoctba So.....release it on PC and lose 30% of your sales due to piracy and gain 70%, or lose 100% of sales and gain 0% by not releasing it on PC? Yeah, brilliant marketing by them. You do realize people pirate games on consoles too, right?

Marky360
Marky360

lazarius12

No I wouldn't want to do that because it would likely hurt Bungie and I like them as a development team and it would be sad for a good game they made to sell poorl soley because of the bad publicity the publisher has.

GameBeaten
GameBeaten

@lazarius12  Eh... I didn't have much interest in the first place. That could change if Destiny happens to be better than a number of some of my favorite games. But after reading the article, I suddenly have a hope that it sells less than they expect. If it does, I hope no one decides to say something so stupid ever again.

---Cipher---
---Cipher---

@deaththrashxx Fable. Molyneux built his reputation on hype and now he's known for never being able to live up to expectations. Besides, if you want to establish a long time IP, you'll need/want returning customers, so if it doesn't live up to expectations, you can bet on a small retention rate.

WPanther54
WPanther54

@Marky360  You are behind the times. Many pc games, especially games that are also released for the consoles,  these days come with full xbox 360 controller support. (funny how a microsoft product works with another microsoft product) You don't even have to mess with the button layout2 and they usually mirror the console's controller scheme for the game.

But if all those buttons on a keyboard freak you out then maybe you are not the best person to ask how a video game should be played or what system a game plays better on.

@RELeon @Diegoctba If the game is good people will buy it. Even those who pirate. This anti-pirating shit is so overblown and you clearly have no knowledge of what you are speaking of.

@RELeon Psh... Developers for consoles never lose sales to the used market or anything.... oh wait....nvm.
