Activision announces new Tony Hawk title

Latest in the long-running skateboarding series due for release on a range of consoles and portables "this fall."

by

Sports franchises have long enlisted a good figurehead to give them that extra appeal. Tiger Woods has helped EA's popular golf series, while John Madden is synonymous with its key NFL franchise. But few others can rival the mainstream popularity that Tony Hawk's involvement in Activision's skating series has leveraged over the years.

The latest instalment, titled Tony Hawk's Proving Ground and announced today by the North American publisher, will set your character on one of several paths, based on the choices you make within the game. One of these variables will be the choice of skating style implemented by the player at the various courses, which include Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC.

The game will also feature video editing tools, including additional visual effects, enabling players to create their own movies from the game. The customisable Skate Lounge will provide players with the opportunity to skate alongside others online.

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS, and is due to be in the shops "this fall."

CRAP YEAAH! THPG have a skate location in Baltimore, MD! And does EA SKATE have a Create-A-Skatergirl? Crap No, which I bet they won't! I'm a gamer pimp.

Why can't we have another Tony Hawk game that is perfection? Putting it on all of these consoles is not the answer.

I hope this one will be better than Project 8. Not that Project 8 was bad, it just wasn't as good as past games. (though Nail the Trick was awesome)

It will be good for the people that accept it. To the rest, it will be bad. You can't please everyone.

No offense, but how's the art style, and how does it play? How about giving this series a sabatical? Unless, it's going to be truly innovative and refreshing.

WTF is everybody's problem? Had it not been for Neversoft innovating a decent control scheme for the genre, we wouldn't have any interesting action sports games. Not to sound like an "old man" gamer, but seriously, some of you li'l noobs have no respect for anything before this generation of consoles or the one before it. EDIT: And for Grimbee, it's a SKATEBOARDING game. That's like saying you want more in a football game than just football, you want them to throw some diamonds down so you can play baseball, too?

This series is stale. The entire franchise needs to be laid to rest once and for all. We'd all be better off.

I hope Skate comes out and beats Tony Hawk out the park so we never have to see another boring Tony Hawk's game ever again

man...i used to love the tony hawk games...2 i think was the best still...but i think project 8 out of the all looks and feels the best to me....the fact that the levels are all there...i can just skate and what i want...but man...i bet they conjured this crap up after ea announced SKATE which looks freakin' awesome since it will be more realistic features...and as someone said below they do release "sequels" way too soon...i will still buy a tony hawk game every once in awhile but i've got to see something awesome in it like i did with project 8 and looking graphically more realistic(cough* except for the characters they you get to create but tony and others..)i think skate may take the cake on this...

I totally agree with aygol, and that is one of the reasons I have stopped like THPS games. If they wouldn't release an expansion pretty much every couple of months I would most likely be looking forward to this, but the sad thing is.... I'm not.

Now they're doing what EA is doing to us: Releasing sequels every 8 months and then getting 6 or 7 out of 10 ratings from the critics isn't that good. You feel like you get the same game every year, just like what EA does to its games. I don't think the latest Tony Hawk games such as Project 8 and American Wasteland got any "great" reviews. Come on guys, do you want to get sequels every year with poor quality, or do you want to get sequels every 2 - 3 years with quality? If someone pays for these games, they would say: Oh man! It's not even a year! What a waste of money... They could just let EA release skate this time, and they could make a better game. Adding video controls is not a big deal, how many times do you want to make a video and "edit" it and post it on YouTube? They have to work on the gameplay, and they have to add the Analog Stick tricks, just like skate. I'm tired of these Tony Hawk games that come out every 8 months just like those cheesy EA franchises. I'm looking for something new, like skate, because that game may be good even if it's EA, unless they want to make sequels every year like EA Sports and ruin the franchise.

I would like the tony hawk games to have bmx and bladers now... Its just that as a game - I think people really should have more to do than just skate about. I mean - it would be very awesome to challenge someone to a trick-fest - one on a bike, one on a board. I would be interested then.. I remember being a bit hyped about project 8, all those teasers and interviews... but it was just another skating game at the end.

This game sounds interesting... but I'll probably buy Skate.

The Tony Hawk franchise really isn't that bad.I just believe it's pretty much restricted to skateboard lovers.Other than that, the Tony Hawk games have always showed good graphics and game physics for their times.

Sure you guys bash Tony Hawk, but as I have seen in the real word, as we get older skateboarding isnt as interesting, but in the same vain, more and more kids are becoming interested in it. These games arnt always for you guy who complain all the time, there for the people who are interested and who are going to buy them, even if they werent born when TH 1! If you dont like it, dont buy it. Simple

I don't get why people are saying the series never offers anything new. Each installment implements something new, I'm especially excited for "Proving Ground" because "Project 8" stripped away a lot of the ridiculous things that had accumulated over the past few games and added some really cool new game mechanics, though they were a lot of flaws. As long as "Proving Ground" doesn't have the glitches that appeared on the PS3 version of "Project 8" I'll be happy, and big-ups to Baltimore, I hope since they're including real world locales they actually do research and toss in some areas you can recognize like the inner harbor and the ghetto. Also I hope they start adding new crazy things again but don't go totally overboard, online play will be a great addition, especially if they add a lot more customization to the character editor--in "Project 8, my friends and I all had to use the same basic character model, that's weak.

dude I remenber I use to watch this skateboarding show on ESPN like 5 years ago (back when THPS2 was out)...I think it was some tour w/the Hawk, anyway I remember his son fell asleep on the touring bus, and this dude made a joke comment on how he's gonna follow the footsteps of his dad and star on the newest game: Riley Hawk's Pro Skater 9, it's weird, I know he deosn't have his own games...but c'mon a 9th game by Tony!? they shood wait 2 years or so to realease a sequel.

Xyno666

I'm sure that the video editing will be crap!!! Sounds cool but they will surely do it sooo basic that it will be THE crap of the game...like graffitis and stickers in the others TH
